Utah DOT Crash Data

Magna's Most Dangerous Roads

Highway 201 carries 13.3% of the crashes on Magna's roads but 7 of the 11 deaths recorded on them from January 2018 through August 4, 2025, along with 22 of the 73 crashes that ended in death or a serious injury. 8400 West (SR-111) had the most crashes, 459, but one death.

This page ranks Magna's roads by the crashes UDOT recorded on them between January 1, 2018 and August 4, 2025, the last date in the public feed. A crash was placed on the street named in the officer's report when that street was close by, and on the nearest mapped street otherwise. Freeway and ramp crashes are tallied apart, as are crashes in private lots and the few that matched no road. Serious or fatal covers deaths and suspected serious injuries.

Magna's records hold 3,380 crashes: 27 on freeway lanes or ramps, 83 in private lots, 11 with no matching road and 3,259 on the roads ranked here. 73 of those were serious or fatal, 2.2% against 2.6% for non-freeway roads across the seven counties in this data, and 11 people died in 10 fatal crashes.

Highway 201: Seven of Eleven Deaths

Highway 201 (SR-201) recorded 435 crashes in Magna, 22 of them serious or fatal (5.1%), and 6 fatal crashes that killed 7 people. It is ranked with Magna's streets because UDOT's records code nearly all of its crashes here as non-freeway crashes; only 5.5% carry the freeway-and-expressway class.

Officers flagged speed in 144 of its crashes (33.1%) and a disregarded signal or sign in 11 of its 22 serious or fatal ones. Rear-end collisions were 49.4% of its crashes, but the harm gathered at its junctions, covered below.

Magna's Seven Streets With 50-Plus Crashes

Every road in Magna with at least 50 crashes in the records, ranked by crash count, freeway lanes and ramps excluded. A crash where two of these roads meet is counted once, on the road the report named.

  • 8400 West (SR-111) — 459 crashes, 14 serious or fatal, 1 death. Pedestrians were involved in 4 of the serious ones. Busiest junctions: 3500 South (76) and 3100 South (59, 4 serious or fatal).
  • Highway 201 (SR-201) — 435 crashes, 22 serious or fatal, 7 deaths. Busiest junctions: 8000 West (73, 6 serious or fatal), 7200 West (70, 6) and SR-111 (64, 5).
  • 3500 South (SR-171) — 382 crashes, 6 serious or fatal, no deaths. Hit and run was flagged in 57 (14.9%). Busiest junctions: 7200 West (62), 8400 West (56) and 8000 West (54).
  • 7200 West — 348 crashes, 7 serious or fatal, 1 death. A motorcycle was in 2 of the serious ones. Busiest junctions: 3500 South (59), 3100 South (32) and 2820 South (25, 2 serious or fatal).
  • 8000 West — 257 crashes, 7 serious or fatal, no deaths. Drivers fled in 46 of them (17.9%). Busiest junction: 3500 South (45).
  • 3100 South — 182 crashes, 1 serious or fatal (0.5%, the lowest share among streets with any), no deaths. A teen driver was involved in 58.
  • Magna Main Street (2700 South) — 120 crashes, none serious or fatal. Half were angle crashes, and 38 happened at 8400 West.

These seven roads hold 2,183 of the 3,259 crashes ranked here (67.0%), 57 of the 73 serious or fatal crashes and 9 of the 11 deaths. Highway 201 alone accounts for 7 of those 9 deaths.

Where Highway 201 Meets 8000 West, 7200 West and SR-111

Sorted by serious or fatal crashes, Highway 201 leads (22), then 8400 West (14), with 7200 West and 8000 West tied at 7. 17 of Highway 201's 22 serious or fatal crashes came at just three junctions: 8000 West, 7200 West and SR-111. One small street stands out by share: 2820 South had 32 crashes, 3 of them serious or fatal (9.4%), the highest share among Magna's 15 busiest roads.

Ignored Signals and Unbelted Occupants

Angle crashes are 30.2% of Magna's crashes and rear-end crashes 26.8%. Crashes involving a parked vehicle make up 13.3%, second only to Kearns among the 57 cities. Of the 73 serious or fatal crashes, 32 were angle crashes and 25 fall in the group UDOT reports as single-vehicle or not applicable, which includes a vehicle hitting a pedestrian, a cyclist or a fixed object. Pedestrians were in 2.6% of crashes but 15 of the serious or fatal ones.

Two flags stand out among those 73: a disregarded signal or sign in 18 (24.7%, against 12.3% regionally) and an unrestrained occupant in 12 (16.4%, against 10.2%). Both are the fourth-highest shares among the 57 cities. Hit and run appears in 17.5% of all crashes, also second only to Kearns. Motorcycles were in 8 serious or fatal crashes, one of the lowest shares in this data.

I-80 Barely Registers

Freeway lanes and ramps account for 27 of Magna's 3,380 crashes: 13 on I-80, 6 on Highway 201's interchange ramps and the rest on other ramps, with none serious or fatal. The figures above leave out property-damage crashes below Utah's reporting threshold, and a crash where two ranked roads meet counts on only one of them.

If You Were Hurt in Magna

Utah law keeps seat-belt use out of an injury case: not wearing one is not comparative negligence and may not be offered as evidence on negligence, injuries or the mitigation of damages (Utah Code § 41-6a-1806). Personal injury protection pays first, at least $3,000 in medical expenses whoever caused the crash (§ 31A-22-307), and a claim for pain and other general damages against the at-fault driver needs an injury that meets § 31A-22-309, such as a fracture, permanent impairment or more than $3,000 in medical bills. A hit-and-run vehicle that is never identified is treated as uninsured (§ 31A-22-305(2)(b)). Fault is compared, and you recover only if the other drivers' combined fault is greater than yours (§ 78B-5-818). Most suits must be filed within four years (§ 78B-2-307); a claim against UDOT or a local government over road design or upkeep needs a written notice of claim within one year (§ 63G-7-402). See our Magna car accident and Magna personal injury pages, our posts on red-light and intersection fault and hit-and-run crashes, and our guides to how fault is proven, PIP claims and filing deadlines.

Compensation a Magna Claim Can Seek

  • Economic: hospital and clinic bills, therapy, medication, lost wages and any lasting loss of earning power.
  • Personal: pain, sleepless nights, and the work, hobbies and family time an injury interrupts.
  • Ahead: treatment you will still need, and the cost of repairing or replacing your vehicle.

Magna Data and Method

Source: UDOT's public crash records (Crash_Locations), January 1, 2018 through August 4, 2025. Magna's limits come from UGRC's current municipal boundaries, which the state data labels Magna City, applied to all years. Streets come from UGRC's Utah Roads, matched within 35 meters with preference for the road named in the report. Serious or fatal means Fatal or Suspected Serious Injury. Regional figures cover non-freeway crashes in Salt Lake, Utah, Davis, Weber, Summit, Cache and Washington counties. Every city we have ranked this way is listed on our statewide page, Utah’s most dangerous roads.
