Utah DOT Crash Data
Riverton's Most Dangerous Roads
13400 South logged more crashes than any other Riverton street from January 2018 through August 4, 2025, 795 of them, and none was fatal. The 13 people killed on Riverton's streets in that span died on other roads, 8 of them on the four state highways that cross the city: 12600 South, Bangerter Highway, Redwood Road and Mountain View Corridor.
UDOT's crash reports for Riverton, from the first day of 2018 to August 4, 2025, were sorted by the street each crash happened on. When more than one street was close by, the road the officer named in the report decided it; otherwise the nearest mapped street did. Freeway and ramp crashes, crashes in private parking areas and a handful that matched no road are kept out of the ranking. A crash is called serious or fatal when the report recorded a death or a suspected serious injury.
UDOT recorded 4,358 crashes inside Riverton's city limits over that period. Only 114 (2.6%) were on freeway lanes or ramps, 95 of them on Bangerter Highway's interchange ramps. Another 124 happened in private parking areas and 22 could not be tied to a street. That leaves 4,098 crashes on Riverton streets: 77 were serious or fatal (1.9%, against 2.6% on the non-freeway roads of the seven counties in this data) and 13 people died.
A Busy Commuter Road With No Deaths
13400 South recorded 795 crashes, the most of any Riverton street, and 53.8% of them were rear-end collisions. 7 were serious or fatal and none killed anyone. Its busiest junctions were Mountain View Corridor (98 crashes counted on 13400 South), Bangerter Highway (79) and 4050 West (64).
The four state routes tell a different story. 12600 South (SR-71), Bangerter Highway (SR-154), Redwood Road (SR-68) and Mountain View Corridor (SR-85) had 2,036 crashes between them, 49.7% of the street total, but 47 of the 77 serious or fatal crashes (61.0%) and 8 of the 13 deaths. Each of the four recorded two deaths.
The Nine Riverton Streets Above 50 Crashes
Every Riverton street with at least 50 crashes in the records, ranked by crash count. Freeway lanes and ramps are left out. A crash where two of these streets meet is counted once, on the road the officer's report named.
- 13400 South — 795 crashes, 7 serious or fatal, no deaths. Rear-end crashes made up 53.8%. Busiest junctions: Mountain View Corridor (98), Bangerter Highway (79) and 4050 West (64).
- 12600 South (SR-71) — 730 crashes, 15 serious or fatal, 2 deaths. The most serious or fatal crashes of any Riverton street, and a motorcycle was involved in 6 of them. Busiest junctions: 2700 West (59), Bangerter Highway (57) and 3600 West (54).
- Bangerter Highway (SR-154) — 648 crashes, 12 serious or fatal, 2 deaths. Officers flagged speed in 112 of them (17.3%). The crossing at 13400 South had 137 crashes; the one at 12600 South had 78, 5 of them serious or fatal.
- Redwood Road (1700 West, SR-68) — 412 crashes, 11 serious or fatal, 2 deaths. Side-impact (angle) crashes were 40.8%, and impaired driving was flagged in 2 of the 11 serious ones. Busiest junctions: 12600 South (75), 13400 South (56) and 11800 South (45).
- Mountain View Corridor (4900 West, SR-85) — 246 crashes, 9 serious or fatal, 2 deaths. At 3.7% serious or fatal, the most severe street on this list. Crashes climbed from 24 in 2018 to 56 in 2024, and 119 happened at 13400 South.
- 2700 West — 205 crashes, 3 serious or fatal, no deaths. A teen driver was involved in 107 of them (52.2%), and angle crashes were 45.4%, the highest share among these nine. Busiest junction: 12600 South (47).
- 3600 West — 101 crashes, 1 serious or fatal, no deaths. 35 of the 101 were at 12600 South.
- 1300 West — 79 crashes, 2 serious or fatal, 1 death. A vehicle leaving the roadway was flagged in 18 crashes, including both serious or fatal ones. Busiest junction: 12600 South (36).
- Sentinel Ridge Boulevard (4520 West) — 50 crashes, none serious or fatal. 74.0% were rear-end crashes, 34 of them at 13400 South, and the records show no crash on it before 2020.
Together the nine hold 3,266 of Riverton's 4,098 street crashes (79.7%), 60 of the 77 serious or fatal crashes and 9 of the 13 deaths. The top two, 13400 South and 12600 South, account for 1,525 crashes on their own.
Ranked by Harm, 13400 South Falls to Fifth
Sort by serious or fatal crashes and the order changes: 12600 South (15), Bangerter Highway (12), Redwood Road (11) and Mountain View Corridor (9) come first, and 13400 South drops to fifth with 7. Per crash, 13400 South is the least severe of those five at 0.9%. Off the list entirely, 3200 West recorded only 10 crashes, yet 2 were serious or fatal and 1 was fatal.
Following Too Closely, and Young Drivers at the Wheel
Rear-end collisions are 40.5% of Riverton's street crashes, against 30.2% across the seven counties, the fourth-highest share among the 57 Utah cities with enough data for a page like this. They are rarely the worst crashes: 8 of the 77 serious or fatal ones. Side-impact (angle) crashes account for 33 of those 77, and the group UDOT reports as single-vehicle or not applicable, which includes a vehicle striking a pedestrian, a cyclist or a fixed object, another 28. A teen driver was involved in 31.9% of crashes and 31.2% of serious or fatal ones, against 23.8% and 19.1% regionally.
Motorcyclists were in 1.6% of crashes but 17 of the 77 serious or fatal ones. Officers flagged a disregarded signal or sign in 17 serious or fatal crashes (22.1%, against 12.3% regionally) and speed in 16. Hit and run appeared in 351 crashes, 8.6%, the same rate as the seven counties, but in only 1 serious or fatal crash. Work-zone codes appear on 6.1% of crashes, more than twice the regional 2.8%; the records do not say which projects were involved.
Ramps, Not Interstates
No interstate crash appears in Riverton's records. The 114 crashes on freeway-type lanes and ramps are 2.6% of the city's total, and 95 of them were on Bangerter Highway's interchange ramps, which are counted apart from its main lanes; the main lanes stay in the street ranking. Two limits apply to every figure here: crashes that caused only property damage below Utah's reporting threshold are not in the records, and a crash where two ranked streets meet is counted on one of them only.
When a Riverton Crash Injures You
Utah drivers may not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent (Utah Code § 41-6a-711), so a rear-end claim usually starts with the following driver, though the lead driver's conduct can matter too. Your own personal injury protection pays first, at least $3,000 of medical expenses regardless of fault (§ 31A-22-307). To recover pain and other general damages from the other driver, the injury must meet a threshold in § 31A-22-309, such as a broken bone, a permanent impairment or more than $3,000 in medical expenses. When the at-fault driver is a minor, the adult who signed the minor's license application can share liability up to the state minimum limits, unless the required insurance was in force (§ 53-3-211). You recover only if the other drivers' combined fault is greater than yours (§ 78B-5-818). Most injury suits must be filed within four years (§ 78B-2-307), but a claim against the city or UDOT over a road condition needs a written notice of claim within one year (§ 63G-7-402). Our Riverton car accident and personal injury pages explain how these claims proceed, Riverton's most dangerous intersections covers people on foot and on bikes at signals, and two posts go deeper: fault in a rear-end collision and teen driver crashes and parent liability. See also how fault is proven, how to file a PIP claim and the deadline to sue.
What the Claim Can Pay For
- Bills and wages: the ambulance, emergency care, imaging, follow-up visits and therapy, the work you missed, and any lasting drop in what you can earn.
- Pain and daily life: physical pain, lost sleep, and the routines and activities an injury takes away.
- What comes later: future procedures and care, plus repair or replacement of a damaged vehicle.
