South Salt Lake has around 25,000 residents but absorbs a volume of traffic far out of proportion to that. The I-15 and I-80 interchange sits on its doorstep, State Street and 3300 South cross inside it, freight moves through its industrial blocks, and multiple TRAX lines plus the S-Line streetcar run at street level. The result is a city where residents are exposed to a great deal of traffic that has no intention of stopping there.

Two features of South Salt Lake alter how a claim has to be run. Commercial trucking brings federal record-keeping — logbooks, electronic data, maintenance and drug-testing records — that can be lawfully destroyed on a schedule, so a preservation demand needs to go out early. And UTA is a government entity, which replaces the ordinary four-year window with a one-year notice of claim. On a corridor with this much of both, the difference between calling in week one and month six is often the whole case.
