How to Get a West Valley City Police Crash Report
Short answer: West Valley City Police crash reports are requested through the city's Online Records Portal, which the department links from its Request a Police Record page. The Records Division's fee page lists accident reports at $15 and says photo identification is required. The Records Division is at 3577 South Market Street and lists hours of Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The details below come from the West Valley City Police Department's own pages, Request a Police Record, the Records Division fee page and the Records Division contact listing, plus the city recorder's records page. For the state law that governs every Utah crash report, see our guide to getting your Utah crash report.
Check the jurisdiction first
West Valley City Police handle crashes inside the city limits. The department's online reporting page draws the line with two questions it asks before anyone files: did the incident occur within the city limits of West Valley City, and did it occur somewhere other than a state freeway? A crash on SR-201 or I-215 is usually a Utah Highway Patrol case, and that report comes from the state's online portal, not from West Valley.
Edges of town are the other trap. A crash near the city line could belong to a neighboring city, or to Unified Police, which patrols Kearns and Magna. The case card the officer handed you settles it. If you have nothing in writing, our article on requesting a Utah police crash report lists other ways to identify the agency.
Requesting the report online
- Open the department's Request a Police Record page and follow the link to the Online Records Portal.
- Ask for the traffic accident report, and give the case number, the date, the location and the drivers' names if you have them.
- Expect to show photo ID. The fee page says photo identification is required for accident and police reports.
- Watch for a response. The fee page says requesters will be contacted within 10 business days, either to release the records, to give an estimate of fees for a voluminous request, or to deny the request.
If the portal will not work for you, the City Recorder's records page gives 801-963-3203 as the number to call for help or more information.
What it costs
The Records Division fee page lists:
- Accident and police reports: $15
- Photographs: $15
- Audio recordings (body worn camera): $15
- Video recordings: $25 for the initial officer's recording
For more audio or video than that, the page says an estimate will be sent within 10 business days, with fees based on an hourly wage. It lists accepted payment as cash, money orders for the exact amount only, debit or credit cards, and checks made payable to West Valley City Police. There is no charge for victims of domestic violence.
Timing, on a four-day week
Two clocks matter. First, the report has to exist: the officer has 10 days after completing the investigation to file it (Utah Code § 41-6a-402(6)). Second, once the agency has your written request, it has 10 business days to provide the report and its data (§ 41-6a-404(3)(b)).
West Valley City adds a wrinkle. The City Recorder's page notes that the 10 business days for processing run Monday through Thursday, and the Records Division keeps Monday-through-Thursday hours. Ten Monday-to-Thursday business days come to about two and a half calendar weeks, so plan on that rather than two weeks.
Going in person
The Records Division is in the police department at 3577 South Market Street, West Valley City, UT 84119. Its contact listing gives 801-963-3388 and hours of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday. The request page itself sends people to the online portal, so call before you drive over if you want to make the request at the counter, and bring photo ID and one of the payment methods above. For general questions, the department's main line is 801-963-3300.
What to have ready
- The case number from the officer's card, if you have it
- The date and approximate time of the crash
- The location: the street and nearest cross street, or the address
- The drivers' names, and your role in the crash (driver, passenger, owner, or parent of someone involved)
- Photo identification
Your role matters because crash reports are protected. State law requires release to a person involved in the crash, a person who suffered loss or injury, and their agent, parent or legal guardian, among others (§ 41-6a-404(3)(a)).
Reports you filed yourself online
West Valley City lets people file some reports online for incidents inside the city that are not emergencies and did not happen on a state freeway, and its list of incident types includes non-injury accidents and hit-and-runs. The online reporting page says that when you finish, you get a case number and can print a copy of the report for free. If anyone was hurt, call for an officer instead. The department lists 801-840-4000 for non-emergency dispatch and police report filing, and 911 for emergencies.
If the report has an error
Factual mistakes such as a wrong plate number or a misspelled name are usually fixed by a supplement from the officer. Call the Records Division at 801-963-3388, explain the problem and have proof ready. Our hub explains your options when you disagree with the officer's opinion about fault.
West Valley City report FAQs
Is the Records Division open on Fridays?
Its listed hours are Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Plan any counter visit or phone call for those days.
What if I don't have a case number?
It speeds things up, but it is not the only way in. The date, time and exact spot of the crash, plus the drivers' names, give records staff enough to search.
Can I get the body camera footage too?
You can ask for it. The fee page lists $15 for body-worn camera audio and $25 for the initial officer's video recording, with an estimate for anything beyond that.
Can a relative request the report for me?
Yes, with your written consent. State law defines an agent to include any individual with signed permission from you to receive the report (§ 41-6a-404(1)(c)).
