Utah DOT Crash Data

The Most Dangerous Roads in Kearns

Drivers left the scene in 18.5% of the crashes on Kearns streets from January 2018 through August 4, 2025, the highest hit-and-run rate among the 57 Utah cities with enough crash data for a page like this, and more than twice the 8.6% across the seven counties studied. 6200 South had both the most crashes, 651, and the most serious or fatal ones, 19.

Each crash UDOT recorded inside Kearns, starting January 1, 2018 and ending with the last record in the public feed on August 4, 2025, was assigned to a street. Where the plotted point sat near more than one road, the street named in the officer's report won; otherwise the closest mapped street did. Ramp crashes, private-lot crashes and the few with no matching road are set aside. Serious or fatal means the report listed a death or a suspected serious injury.

The records hold 4,148 crashes inside Kearns. Just 1 was on a freeway ramp, 74 were in private lots and 4 matched no road, which leaves 4,069 on Kearns streets. Of those, 96 were serious or fatal (2.4%; the seven-county figure for non-freeway roads is 2.6%) and 11 people were killed.

Kearns Leads the Region in Hit-and-Run Reports

Officers coded 752 Kearns street crashes as hit and run. Most were not among the worst crashes: 7 of the 96 serious or fatal crashes carried the flag (7.3%, against 5.1% regionally). A second pattern sits beside it. 563 crashes (13.8%) involved a parked vehicle, also the highest share of the 57 cities and more than double the regional 6.2%.

Kearns crashes also run late. 21.4% happened between 7 p.m. and midnight, the highest share of the 57 cities (16.1% regionally), and 29.5% happened in the dark, again the highest (23.7%). The records do not say why, and they do not tie the parked-car crashes to the hit-and-run flags.

Where Kearns Crashes Are Recorded, Street by Street

The ten Kearns streets with at least 50 crashes, ranked by crash count. Freeway ramps are left out. When a crash happened where two ranked streets meet, it counts once, on the road the report named.

  • 6200 South — 651 crashes, 19 serious or fatal, 1 death. Angle crashes were 46.7%, and a motorcycle was in 5 of the serious ones. Busiest junctions: 5600 West (89), Airport Road (44) and Center Park Drive (42, 3 serious or fatal).
  • 5600 West (SR-172) — 476 crashes, 7 serious or fatal, 2 deaths. 155 of its crashes were at 5400 South, the largest junction figure on this list; 6200 South follows with 60. Impairment was flagged in 12 crashes.
  • 5415 South (SR-173) — 291 crashes, 12 serious or fatal (4.1%), 1 death. Speed was flagged in 6 of the 12 serious ones. Busiest junction: 4220 West (58).
  • 5400 South (SR-173) — 285 crashes, 8 serious or fatal, 2 deaths. A pedestrian was involved in 3 of the serious ones. Busiest junctions: 5600 West (71) and Cougar Lane (33).
  • Cougar Lane (4800 West) — 260 crashes, 2 serious or fatal, no deaths. A teen driver was involved in 90 (34.6%). Busiest junctions: 5400 South (57), 5415 South (40) and Kearns High Drive (34).

  • 4700 South — 98 crashes, 2 serious or fatal, no deaths. 38 were at 4000 West.
  • Northwest Avenue (4829 West) — 62 crashes, 2 serious or fatal, no deaths. 51 of the 62 were at 5415 South.
  • 4420 West — 56 crashes, 3 serious or fatal (5.4%, the highest share on this list), no deaths. Half were angle crashes.

The ten streets account for 2,599 of the 4,069 street crashes (63.9%), 64 of the 96 serious or fatal crashes and 7 of the 11 deaths. Two of them, 5415 South and 5400 South, are one state route under two names, which changes the picture when the list is sorted by harm.

SR-173 Under Two Street Names

Ranked by serious or fatal crashes, 6200 South stays first with 19. The next two are both State Route 173, which the state road map carries through Kearns under two names: 5415 South (12) and 5400 South (8). Taken together they had 576 crashes, 20 serious or fatal and 3 deaths, one more serious or fatal crash than 6200 South. 5600 West, second by crash count, drops to fourth with 7.

Night Crashes and Speed in the Serious Cases

Angle crashes make up 35.0% of Kearns street crashes (32.6% regionally) and rear-end crashes 24.9% (30.2%). Among the 96 serious or fatal crashes, 38 fall in the group UDOT reports as single-vehicle or not applicable, which includes a vehicle hitting a pedestrian, a cyclist or a fixed object, and 34 were angle crashes. Pedestrians were in 2.1% of crashes but 17 of the serious or fatal ones.

Officers flagged speed in 29 of the 96 serious or fatal crashes (30.2%), the highest share among the 57 cities and well above the regional 18.9%. A vehicle leaving the roadway was flagged in 19 serious or fatal crashes, impairment in 7, and a motorcyclist was involved in 16.

One Freeway-Ramp Crash in the Whole Period

No interstate crash appears in Kearns's records, and only 1 of its 4,148 crashes was on a freeway-type ramp. Nearly every Kearns crash in this data happened on a city street. Keep two limits in mind: property-damage crashes below Utah's reporting threshold never reach these records, and a crash where two ranked streets meet is counted on only one of them.

Hit and Run, Insurance and Deadlines in Kearns

When the driver who hit you leaves and is never identified, Utah treats that vehicle as uninsured (Utah Code § 31A-22-305(2)(b)), so your own uninsured motorist coverage can step in. Personal injury protection on your policy pays first either way, with at least $3,000 in medical expenses covered no matter who was at fault (§ 31A-22-307). A claim against the other driver for pain and other general damages requires an injury past the threshold in § 31A-22-309, such as a fracture, permanent impairment or medical bills above $3,000, and that threshold does not apply to an uninsured motorist claim. Your recovery shrinks by your share of fault and is barred unless the others' combined fault is greater (§ 78B-5-818). Most injury suits have a four-year deadline (§ 78B-2-307); a claim against a government body over a road hazard needs a written notice of claim within one year (§ 63G-7-402). Read more on our Kearns car accident and Kearns personal injury pages, in our posts on hit-and-run crashes and the uninsured motorist claim process, and in our guides to proving fault, filing a PIP claim and filing deadlines.

Money a Claim Can Recover

  • Out-of-pocket: emergency treatment, doctor and therapy bills, prescriptions, missed paychecks, and reduced earning ability if the injury lasts.
  • Non-economic: pain, anxiety behind the wheel, and the time with family or activities an injury costs you.
  • Down the road: care you will still need, and the cost to fix or replace your vehicle.
