Payson's Crash-Prone Roads

Payson sits at the south end of Utah Valley, where I-15 and US-6 share the freeway, and it is the northern gateway to the Mount Nebo Scenic Byway, which climbs above 9,000 feet before coming back down to the interstate at Nephi. SR-198, the old US-6 alignment, runs through town and links Santaquin, Salem and Spanish Fork. For injuries that don't involve a vehicle, visit our Spanish Fork personal injury page, which covers the larger city up the road. For the streets with the most crashes in UDOT’s records, see Payson’s most dangerous roads.

SR-198

Once part of US-6, this 16-mile state route runs from I-15 at Santaquin through Payson and Salem to US-6 in Spanish Fork. In town it serves homes, businesses and side streets; between towns it crosses open country where speeds climb. Angle and turning crashes in town and higher-speed head-on and rear-end collisions between towns are typical.

800 South (SR-178) and exit 248

A 1.2-mile connector running east from the diamond interchange at I-15 exit 248 to SR-198. It pours freeway traffic onto a city street, so rear-end impacts and turning collisions cluster near the ramps and the SR-198 junction.

SR-115 and exit 250

Just north of town, exit 250 connects the interstate to SR-115, a two-lane highway that heads north to Benjamin and then west toward Spanish Fork. Farm vehicles and fast through traffic share its rural stretches, where a single misjudged pass can turn into a head-on crash.

Payson Canyon and the Nebo Loop

The byway leaves Payson and climbs through the Mount Nebo Wilderness past trailheads such as Devil's Kitchen. Mount Nebo typically holds snow from about mid-October into July, and the road's grades and curves carry sightseers, hikers' vehicles and motorcyclists together. Riders should read our motorcycle claims guide, since motorcycle policies work differently from car policies.

I-15 past Payson

The interstate here carries long-distance travelers and freight alongside local trips between Payson, Spanish Fork and Provo. Chain collisions, lane-change sideswipes and tractor-trailer crashes happen at freeway speed; see our truck crash guide when a commercial vehicle is involved.

Who responds in Payson

The Payson Police Department, at 405 West Utah Avenue, handles crashes inside the city, and the Utah Highway Patrol generally takes I-15. Outside city limits, including the canyon, another agency may take the report, so confirm who responded. Citations are heard at the Payson Justice Court, 439 West Utah Avenue, which does not decide injury claims. If a Payson City, Utah County, UDOT or UTA road, signal or vehicle contributed, notice of claim is due within one year under Utah Code § 63G-7-402.

PIP Covers the First Bills

Utah auto policies must include personal injury protection under Utah Code § 31A-22-307: at least $3,000 for medical care, plus lost gross income at 85% or $250 per week, whichever is lower, for up to 52 weeks, no matter who caused the crash. Learn how PIP works.

An emergency visit at Mountain View Hospital, a scan and a follow-up can use it all within days. Claiming pain and suffering from the at-fault driver requires meeting one of the tests in Utah Code § 31A-22-309(1):

  • Medical expenses beyond $3,000
  • A fractured bone
  • Permanent disability or impairment based on objective findings
  • Permanent disfigurement
  • Loss of a limb
  • Death of the injured person

When one applies, the at-fault driver's liability insurance owes your full losses; if those limits are too small, underinsured motorist coverage can add more.

Dividing Fault After a Payson Crash

Utah Code § 78B-5-818 reduces your recovery by your percentage of fault and bars recovery against defendants whose combined fault is not greater than yours.

Adjusters will ask whether you left enough room on SR-198, whether you were going too fast for a canyon curve or fresh snow, and who had the green at the exit 248 ramps. Photos of the road surface, weather records and the crash report settle much of this, and roadside evidence can vanish with the next storm or plow.

Deadlines to know

Four years is the general limit for injury suits and two for wrongful death, while a claim against Payson City, Utah County, UDOT or UTA needs notice within one year. Our deadline guide explains the exceptions.

Payson Crash Claims We Handle

Highway and town-street collisions

On SR-198, 800 South and the side streets, from left turns across traffic to angle crashes at intersections. Utah Code § 41-6a-903 requires a left-turning driver to yield to oncoming traffic close enough to be an immediate hazard.

I-15 crashes

At exits 248 and 250 and on the freeway past town. Crash data must be preserved before vehicles are repaired or scrapped.

Canyon and byway crashes

On the Nebo Loop and in Payson Canyon, where curves, grades and snow set up single-vehicle and head-on crashes. Road conditions and maintenance can become part of the claim.

Walkers and bike riders

In town crosswalks, where Utah Code § 41-6a-1002 requires drivers to slow or stop for pedestrians, and on rural roads without sidewalks. See our bicycle claims guide.

No insurance, or a driver who fled

Uninsured motorist coverage can cover a driver without insurance or one who drove off. If there was no contact, Utah Code § 31A-22-305(6) requires clear and convincing proof beyond your own testimony, so find witnesses fast. Read about hit-and-run claims.

Steps After a Payson Crash

  • Call 911. Payson Police cover city streets and troopers cover I-15; anywhere else, ask which agency took the report and write down the case number.
  • Get evaluated the same day. Mountain View Hospital, at 1000 East 100 North, is a Level IV trauma center that stabilizes serious injuries before transfer, and Utah Valley Hospital in Provo is Level II.
  • Photograph the vehicles, the road surface, any snow or ice, and where each car came to rest.
  • Take down witness names and numbers; on a canyon road, passing drivers may be the only witnesses you get.
  • File your PIP claim and don't give the other insurer a recorded statement yet. Here is how attorneys handle the insurance side.

Lawsuits from Payson crashes are filed in Utah County's Fourth Judicial District Court at 137 North Freedom Boulevard in Provo. Most settle, yet our legal team prepares each claim as if a jury will hear it. Read how a Utah injury case unfolds or call (801) 921-5134. Free consultation. No attorney fees unless we win.
