Carbon County Roads Behind Most Crashes

Price sits on US-6, the highway that comes down out of Spanish Fork Canyon and continues southeast toward Green River, so a large share of the traffic passing through is long-haul: freight, work pickups and travelers bound for the Wasatch Front or Moab. State Route 10 leaves Price for Emery County, and the SR-55 business route carries city traffic along First North and Main Street. The most serious local collisions tend to happen at highway speed rather than in city congestion.

US-6 toward Helper and the canyon

Westbound, US-6 climbs past Helper toward Soldier Summit before dropping into Spanish Fork Canyon. Long grades, heavy trucks slowing on the climbs and storms that arrive fast lead to rear-end, passing and lane-departure collisions, and the other driver is often just passing through.

SR-10 south into Emery County

Route 10 runs from Price southwest through Emery County to I-70 near Fremont Junction. It is a rural highway for most of that distance, so a single drift across the center line or a turn at a county-road junction can mean a head-on or broadside crash at speed.

SR-55 on First North and Main Street

The state business route leaves US-6 west of town, follows First North Street east, jogs south on 3rd East and runs along Main Street before rejoining US-6 at the southeast city limits. Signalized intersections, left turns across oncoming lanes and cars leaving shopping lots account for most in-town claims.

US-191 and SR-157 north of Price

Above Helper, US-191 splits off US-6 and climbs Indian Canyon toward Duchesne, while SR-157 runs from Helper toward Kenilworth. These roads carry lighter traffic but leave little room to recover from a mistake, particularly on packed snow.

The drive to and from the Wasatch Front

UDOT reported in May 2026 that it is building a grade-separated interchange at the US-6 and US-89 junction near Thistle to cut serious crashes there, with one lane each way through mid-November. A crash on that stretch happens in Utah County, which changes which agency writes the report and which court hears the case.

Which agency takes the report

Price City Police, headquartered at 910 North 700 East, investigate collisions on city streets. The Carbon County Sheriff’s Office covers unincorporated roads, and the Utah Highway Patrol commonly responds on US-6 and the state routes. When a UDOT work zone, a snowplow or a city or county vehicle played a part, Utah Code § 63G-7-402 gives you one year to file a notice of claim.

How PIP Works After a Price Crash

Your own personal injury protection coverage pays first, whoever caused the wreck: at least $3,000 toward medical bills and 85% of lost gross income, capped at $250 a week for up to 52 weeks (Utah Code § 31A-22-307). Our no-fault explainer walks through the rest.

An ambulance ride along US-6 and an emergency workup at Castle View Hospital can use that up within a day. To claim pain and suffering from the driver at fault, someone covered by PIP must show at least one of these under § 31A-22-309:

  • Medical charges above $3,000
  • A broken bone
  • Permanent impairment or disability backed by objective medical findings
  • Lasting disfigurement
  • Dismemberment
  • A death caused by the collision

Clear any one of them and the full claim runs against the at-fault driver’s liability insurer. The threshold does not limit an uninsured motorist claim. If the other policy is too small, your own underinsured motorist coverage can add to it.

Splitting Fault on Carbon County Highways

Under Utah Code § 78B-5-818, you recover only when the defendants’ combined fault is greater than yours, and whatever you receive shrinks by your own percentage.

On US-6, adjusters focus on passing decisions, following distance and speed for the weather; on SR-10, on who crossed the center line; in town, on who had the green. Scene photos, the trooper’s diagram, a trucking company’s electronic data and the names of drivers who stopped to help answer those questions, and much of it is gone within weeks.

Filing deadlines

Most injury suits must be filed within four years (§ 78B-2-307) and wrongful death suits within two (§ 78B-2-304). A claim against Price City, Carbon County or UDOT needs a notice of claim within one year. Our deadline guide covers the exceptions.

Price-Area Crash Claims We Handle

US-6 highway collisions

Head-on, passing and rear-end crashes between Helper and the eastern end of the county, usually at full highway speed.

Semi-truck and work-vehicle crashes

Tractor-trailers and company pickups share US-6 and SR-10 with local drivers. A commercial claim brings federal safety records and a second insurer into play; see our truck accident guide.

Intersection crashes in town

Signal, left-turn and parking-lot collisions along the SR-55 business route on First North and Main Street.

Snow and ice crashes

Spinouts and chain collisions in winter, where the real question is whether each driver slowed enough for the conditions, not whether the storm was to blame.

Uninsured and hit-and-run drivers

Your own uninsured motorist coverage usually steps in. If a vehicle forced you off the road without touching you, § 31A-22-305(6) requires clear and convincing proof of it beyond your own account, so a witness’s name matters.

After a Crash in or Near Price

  • Call 911. Ask whether Price Police, the sheriff’s office or the Highway Patrol is writing the report, and note the case number before you leave.
  • Get checked the same day. Castle View Hospital at 300 North Hospital Drive is a state-designated Level IV trauma center; patients with the most serious injuries may be transferred to a higher-level trauma center.
  • Photograph the vehicles, skid marks, the nearest mile marker, the road surface and any truck’s DOT number.
  • Collect names and phone numbers of witnesses; on the highway, people who stop to help are gone within minutes.
  • Open a PIP claim with your own insurer, and hold off on any recorded statement to the other driver’s carrier.

A lawsuit over a Carbon County crash is filed in the Seventh Judicial District, which covers Carbon, Emery, Grand and San Juan counties. Our office is in Draper, and our legal team can review a Price-area case by phone; most claims settle, but we prepare every one for court.
