Sandy Roads Where Crashes Pile Up

Sandy's collisions concentrate along State Street and 700 East, the east-west connectors at 9000 South and 10600 South, the I-15 ramps, event nights at America First Field, and the ski route up Little Cottonwood Canyon. The full street-by-street ranking from UDOT crash records is on our Sandy’s most dangerous roads page.

State Street and 700 East

Long commercial stretches with a driveway every few hundred feet. Drivers slowing to turn and others pulling out cause most of the collisions.

9000 South (SR-209) and 10600 South

The main links between I-15 and east Sandy carry heavy traffic through multi-lane left turns. Signal timing and who entered on yellow decide many of these claims.

I-15 at 9000 South and 10600 South

Two busy interchanges south of Salt Lake, where commuter peaks meet freight traffic. Sudden braking in the merge areas produces chain rear-end crashes, and the vehicle data should be preserved quickly.

Event traffic around America First Field

The stadium on State Street between 9000 and 9400 South empties thousands of cars and people at once, and the TRAX Blue Line's Sandy Expo station serves it. Crashes after events often involve people walking in the dark.

SR-209 to Little Cottonwood Canyon (SR-210)

9000 South becomes the road to the canyon mouth, where SR-210 climbs to Snowbird and Alta. Ski weekends bring rental cars and ice, and speed for the conditions becomes the question.

Who Investigates in Sandy

Sandy City Police take crashes inside the city and the Utah Highway Patrol covers I-15 and the canyon roads. If a UTA vehicle, a city truck or a road hazard contributed, a notice of claim is due within one year under the Governmental Immunity Act.

Medical Bills: Your Own Policy Pays First

Utah requires personal injury protection, and it pays before fault is sorted out: no less than $3,000 in medical bills and 85% of lost gross earnings up to $250 per week for up to 52 weeks (§ 31A-22-307). Learn more in our PIP guide.

An ambulance ride to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray plus imaging can spend that quickly. For pain, suffering and long-term losses, § 31A-22-309 lets you claim against the at-fault driver once you show:

  • More than $3,000 in medical expense.
  • A broken bone of any kind.
  • Permanent impairment or disability confirmed by objective evidence.
  • Permanent scarring or disfigurement.
  • Amputation or dismemberment.
  • A fatal injury.

With the threshold met, the at-fault driver's liability insurer answers for the whole claim; your UM/UIM coverage covers a shortfall, and uninsured motorist claims are exempt from the threshold. Read how uninsured and underinsured coverage works.

Sharing the Blame

Under § 78B-5-818 your recovery shrinks by your share of fault, and it disappears unless the defendants together are more at fault than you.

Expect questions about the gap you took on State Street, your speed on the canyon road, or where a pedestrian was after a game. Stadium, TRAX and business video plus dashcams resolve these if preserved promptly.

Know your deadlines

Four years for most injury claims (§ 78B-2-307), two for wrongful death, and one year for a notice of claim against UDOT, UTA, Salt Lake County or Sandy City. All Utah deadlines explained.

Sandy Crash Cases

Turning and driveway crashes

State Street, 700 East, 9000 South and 10600 South, where left turns and lot exits cause the most collisions.

Freeway interchange crashes

I-15 at 9000 and 10600 South, where merges and backups set off multi-car collisions.

Canyon crashes

SR-209 and SR-210 into Little Cottonwood Canyon, with ice, grade and ski traffic.

Pedestrians after events

Game and event crowds cross State Street on foot, often at night. Insurers argue the pedestrian stepped out; crosswalk location, lighting and video usually settle it.

Uninsured and hit-and-run crashes

Your UM coverage may be the main source of payment when the other driver has none or flees. If that car never touched you, Utah requires clear and convincing proof beyond your own testimony that it existed; see our hit-and-run page.

After a Crash in Sandy

  • Call 911, let Sandy Police or UHP take the report, and get the case number before you leave.
  • Get checked that day; Intermountain Medical Center in Murray is a Level I trauma center.
  • Take photos of the vehicles, the lanes and signals, and anything on the road.
  • Ask witnesses and TRAX riders for names and numbers on the spot.
  • Open your PIP claim and skip recorded statements to the other insurer for now. Our guide to the claim process walks through the rest.

A Sandy crash lawsuit belongs in the Third Judicial District Court for Salt Lake County, whose main courthouse is the Matheson Courthouse at 450 South State Street. Most cases settle first.
