Santaquin's Crash Hot Spots

Santaquin sits at the south end of Utah County along I-15, about 21 miles south of Provo and 19 miles north of Nephi, and a small slice of the city reaches across the line into Juab County. It is where US-6 meets the interstate and where SR-198 begins its run north to Payson, so freeway travelers, local commuters and farm vehicles all pass through a small town. For injuries other than crashes, see our Spanish Fork personal injury page, which serves the nearest larger city.

Main Street (US-6)

US-6 runs through the center of town as Main Street, heading west toward Silver City and east to join I-15 at exit 244. Through travelers, trucks and residents on errands all use it, and turning crashes at side streets and rear-end collisions behind slowing vehicles are the usual pattern. Utah Code § 41-6a-903 requires a driver turning left to yield to oncoming traffic close enough to be an immediate hazard.

The exit 242 and 244 interchanges

Santaquin has two I-15 exits. Traffic leaving the freeway at speed meets town streets within a short distance, and drivers unfamiliar with the area hesitate or change lanes late. Rear-end impacts and merge sideswipes near the ramps are typical.

SR-198 north toward Payson

The old US-6 alignment starts at I-15 in Santaquin and heads north-northeast through open country to Payson, then on through Salem to Spanish Fork. Speeds climb between towns, and farm accesses, slow equipment and passing attempts set up head-on and angle crashes. Our Payson car accident page covers the next stretch north.

I-15 toward the county line

South of town the interstate carries long-haul freight and holiday travelers on toward Juab County and Nephi. Fatigue, speed and heavy trucks figure in the serious crashes here; our truck crash guide covers claims against carriers.

Winter at the south end of the valley

Santaquin sits just under 5,000 feet, and its winters can be severely cold. Black ice on ramps and shaded streets, and drivers who carry freeway speed into town, produce slide-offs and chain collisions. Photos of the road surface matter because conditions change within hours.

Who investigates a Santaquin crash

Santaquin has its own police department at 275 West Main Street, which handles crashes inside city limits; its non-emergency dispatch line is (801) 798-5600. The Utah Highway Patrol generally takes crashes on I-15, and the Utah County Sheriff's Office may cover unincorporated roads nearby. If the crash happened on the part of Santaquin that lies in Juab County, confirm which county's agencies and court are involved.

PIP Is the First Payer

Utah Code § 31A-22-307 makes your own insurer pay personal injury protection regardless of fault: $3,000 or more in medical expenses, plus 85% of lost gross income up to $250 per week, for a maximum of 52 consecutive weeks. See how the PIP system works in Utah.

An ambulance to Mountain View Hospital in Payson, imaging and a transfer can pass that amount on the first day. Utah Code § 31A-22-309(1) keeps a PIP-covered person from suing the at-fault driver for general damages unless there is:

  • Medical bills of more than $3,000
  • A bone broken in the crash
  • A lasting disability or impairment supported by objective findings
  • Permanent disfigurement or scarring
  • The loss of a limb
  • A death

Once one is met, the responsible driver's liability insurer is on the hook for the full claim; if that policy is thin, underinsured motorist benefits from your own policy can add to it.

Fault Disputes in Santaquin Claims

Under Utah Code § 78B-5-818, a jury sets percentages of fault. Your damages are reduced by yours, and if the defendants together are not more at fault than you, there is no recovery.

The adjuster will ask whether you were going too fast for ice on the ramps, whether you tried to pass on SR-198, and who had the right of way turning on Main Street. The crash report, weather records, truck telematics and early photos answer those questions.

Time limits

You generally have four years to file an injury suit and two for wrongful death. If Santaquin City, Utah County, UDOT or UTA may share the blame, notice of claim is due within one year under Utah Code § 63G-7-402. Read the Utah deadline guide.

Santaquin Crashes We Handle

Main Street and US-6 crashes

Turning, rear-end and angle collisions where through traffic on US-6 meets local trips.

Interstate and ramp crashes

At exits 242 and 244 and on I-15, including semitrucks. Event data from each vehicle and a carrier's logs should be requested before they are lost.

Rural highway crashes

On SR-198 and the farm roads around town, where speed, passing and slow equipment combine. Head-on crashes out here are often severe.

Pedestrians and bike riders

In town and on roads without sidewalks. Drivers must slow or stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk on their half of the road under Utah Code § 41-6a-1002. Our pedestrian guide has more.

Uninsured and hit-and-run crashes

Uninsured motorist coverage can respond when the other driver lacks insurance or flees. For a no-contact crash, Utah Code § 31A-22-305(6) requires clear and convincing evidence of the other vehicle beyond your own testimony. Read our hit-and-run guide.

What to Do After a Santaquin Crash

  • Call 911 and ask which agency responded: Santaquin Police in town, the Highway Patrol on I-15, or the Sheriff's Office outside city limits. Keep the case number.
  • The closest emergency room is Mountain View Hospital in Payson (1000 East 100 North), a Level IV trauma center; patients who need a higher level of trauma care go on to Utah Valley Hospital in Provo, a Level II center. Get checked the same day.
  • Take pictures of both vehicles, the pavement conditions and where everything ended up before tow trucks clear the lanes.
  • Get witnesses' contact details; interstate travelers may be hundreds of miles away by evening.
  • Report to your insurer for PIP and don't give the other driver's insurer a recorded statement yet. See how attorneys handle car insurance claims.
