The Roads Behind South Jordan Crash Claims

South Jordan's crash map follows its growth: a state highway rebuilt around new interchanges, a corridor still on its way to becoming a freeway, busy east-west connectors, and Daybreak, where light rail and people on foot share the street. Each produces its own kind of collision and its own fight about fault. The full street-by-street ranking is on our South Jordan’s most dangerous roads page.

Bangerter Highway (SR-154)

UDOT finished underpass interchanges at 9800, 10400 and 11400 South, and Bangerter is now stoplight-free from I-15 in Draper to 4100 South. New on-ramps and merges replaced signals drivers knew for decades, and merge and ramp collisions are the pattern that replaced the old red-light crashes.

Mountain View Corridor (SR-85)

Through South Jordan it is still a divided highway with signals at the cross streets. UDOT plans to convert the stretch between Porter Rockwell Boulevard and Old Bingham Highway to a freeway, with construction expected to begin in 2027. Until then, near-freeway speeds meet signals, and rear-end and red-light crashes follow.

10400 and 11400 South

The main links between I-15, Bangerter and Mountain View, past The District, schools and dense housing. With the Bangerter underpasses open, these streets carry interchange traffic at ground level, and left turns into retail driveways cause most of the collisions.

Daybreak and the TRAX Red Line

The Red Line runs at street level through Daybreak, and the neighborhood is built for walking and biking around Oquirrh Lake. Drivers who treat it like any other suburb, and miss a walker or rider at a crossing, are the recurring problem.

West-side work zones

Mountain View lane closures, utility work and new subdivisions make shifted lanes and temporary striping routine. A work-zone crash can add the contractor or UDOT to the case, and any claim against a public agency starts with a one-year notice.

Who responds, and which clock starts

South Jordan Police take crashes on city streets; the Utah Highway Patrol usually works I-15. If a TRAX train, a UDOT work zone or another public body is part of it, the Governmental Immunity Act requires notice within one year.

Paying the Medical Bills

Utah is a no-fault state, so your own PIP coverage pays first: at least $3,000 of medical bills, plus lost income at 85% of gross up to $250 a week for as long as 52 weeks. How PIP works.

Pain and suffering sit outside PIP. To claim them from the at-fault driver, the injury has to meet one of these:

  • More than $3,000 in medical bills
  • A broken bone
  • Permanent disability or impairment shown by objective findings
  • Disfigurement that is permanent
  • Dismemberment (loss of a limb)
  • A death

Clear that bar and the at-fault driver's insurer owes the full claim. If that policy is thin, your own underinsured coverage is added on top, not subtracted. How UIM works.

Fault Is Shared in Utah

You recover only if the drivers you pursue were more at fault than you, and whatever you recover shrinks by your own percentage (Utah Code § 78B-5-818).

At a new Bangerter on-ramp the adjuster will question your merge; on 11400 South, your left turn; in Daybreak, where the walker or rider was. Photos, video from nearby cameras and witness names gathered early keep that percentage low.

Deadlines

Four years for most crash injuries, two for wrongful death, and one year to give notice to a public body such as UDOT, UTA or South Jordan City. Full deadline guide.

South Jordan Crash Cases We Take

Interchange and merge crashes

The new 9800, 10400 and 11400 South underpasses on Bangerter and the signalized Mountain View crossings, including chain collisions when traffic stops short.

Turning and driveway collisions

Left turns into The District and the retail pads along 10400 and 11400 South.

Work-zone crashes

Mountain View lane closures and subdivision construction, where a contractor or UDOT may share fault.

Walkers, cyclists and the Red Line

Daybreak crosswalks, trail crossings and street-level TRAX tracks. A UTA train or stop means a government claim and the one-year notice.

Uninsured drivers and hit-and-runs

If the other driver fled or carries no insurance, your own UM coverage may pay. If that car never touched you, Utah requires clear and convincing proof beyond your own testimony that it existed, so report it quickly and note who saw it. Hit-and-run guide.

After a South Jordan Crash

  • Call 911. South Jordan Police or the Highway Patrol will write the report; leave knowing the case number and which agency took it.
  • Get checked the same day. Intermountain Riverton Hospital, a Level IV trauma center, is close by to evaluate and stabilize; the most serious injuries go to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, a Level I center.
  • Photograph the lanes, signals, damage and debris, and ask nearby businesses to hold their video.
  • Write down witnesses' names and numbers before they drive off.
  • Start your PIP claim with your own insurer and hold off on a recorded statement to the other one. What happens next.

If a South Jordan crash case has to be filed, it goes to Third District Court for Salt Lake County, which hears cases at the Matheson Courthouse (450 South State Street) and the West Jordan courthouse (8080 South Redwood Road). Most settle first. Call (801) 921-5134 for a free review; there are no attorney fees unless we win. See also our South Jordan personal injury page and Utah car accident guide.
