The Roads Behind Tooele Crashes

Tooele is the county seat, and most residents who work in the Salt Lake Valley commute the same way: north on SR-36 to I-80 at Lake Point, then east along the south end of the Great Salt Lake. Inside the city, Main Street is SR-36 itself, and 1000 North (SR-112) runs toward Grantsville along the edge of the Tooele Army Depot, with industrial traffic from former depot land feeding onto local streets.

Main Street (SR-36)

The city’s main street and the valley’s main highway are the same road. Through traffic bound for I-80 mixes with shoppers turning into businesses, so rear-end collisions at signals and left turns across oncoming lanes are the norm.

SR-36 north to Lake Point

The stretch between Tooele, Stansbury Park and the I-80 interchange carries the commuter surge in both directions. Speeds rise, merges come quickly, and a backup at the interchange can stop traffic where drivers are not expecting it.

I-80 toward Salt Lake City

The interstate is the county’s link to jobs, the airport and long-haul freight. Heavy trucks, high speeds and long gaps between exits make these the most serious collisions a Tooele commuter is likely to face, and the Highway Patrol investigates them.

1000 North (SR-112) toward Grantsville

SR-112 follows the northeast boundary of the Army depot and links the city with Grantsville. Depot and industrial trucks, faster open stretches and new subdivisions meeting the highway lead to angle and rear-end crashes.

A valley outgrowing its highway

Planners concluded years ago that SR-36 alone would not have the capacity for the valley’s future traffic, which is why UDOT has been developing the Midvalley Highway (SR-179). Construction zones and busy two-lane connectors are where turning and failure-to-yield crashes arise.

Who investigates in Tooele

Tooele City Police respond inside city limits, the Tooele County Sheriff’s Office covers unincorporated areas, and the Utah Highway Patrol handles I-80 and many state-highway crashes. If a UDOT work zone, a county road defect or a city vehicle played a part, § 63G-7-402 requires a notice of claim within one year.

The First Layer of Coverage: Your PIP

No matter who caused the crash, Utah requires your own policy to pay first. Personal injury protection pays reasonable medical expenses up to at least $3,000 and replaces 85% of lost gross income, capped at $250 weekly, for as long as 52 weeks (§ 31A-22-307). Read how Utah’s no-fault system works.

Mountain West Medical Center in Tooele is a Level IV trauma center, so a patient with serious injuries may be transferred to a higher-level trauma center in the Salt Lake Valley, and the bills climb fast. To seek general damages from the at-fault driver, § 31A-22-309(1) requires:

  • Medical expenses above $3,000
  • Any bone fracture
  • A permanent disability or impairment proven by objective findings
  • Permanent disfigurement
  • Loss of a body part (dismemberment)
  • A fatal injury

Meet any one and the claim moves to the at-fault driver’s bodily injury coverage. Those limits are often far smaller than the cost of a serious injury, so your own underinsured motorist coverage can matter a great deal; see how UIM claims work.

How Fault Is Divided

Section 78B-5-818 lets you recover only from defendants whose combined fault exceeds your own, and any award is reduced by the percentage assigned to you.

On SR-36 the insurer will ask whether you followed too closely in commuter traffic; on I-80, whether you changed lanes safely around a truck; at a stop-controlled crossing, who arrived first. Photos, the crash report and the names of other commuters are the best answers, and they get harder to find every week.

Time limits

Four years for most injury claims under § 78B-2-307, two years for a wrongful death case, and one year to notify UDOT, Tooele County or Tooele City of a claim. Our statute of limitations page has more.

Tooele Crash Cases

Commuter corridor collisions

SR-36 and the Lake Point interchange, where volume, speed and sudden backups combine.

Interstate and truck crashes

I-80 between Tooele Valley and Salt Lake City, where a freight carrier’s driver logs and electronic data must be requested before they are overwritten. Our truck crash guide explains why.

Work zone and road-condition crashes

Construction zones, missing signs or broken pavement can bring a government entity or its contractor into the claim, along with the one-year notice requirement.

Intersection and turning crashes

Main Street and the cross streets through town, where drivers turn across traffic or pull out of businesses into moving lanes.

Uninsured and hit-and-run drivers

When the other car drives off and is never identified, § 31A-22-305 classifies it as an uninsured motor vehicle, which opens your UM coverage. See our hit-and-run guide.

After a Crash in Tooele

  • Call 911. Depending on location, Tooele City Police, the county sheriff or UHP will respond; ask for the case number before you go.
  • Get checked the same day at Mountain West Medical Center (Level IV). Serious trauma may need a Level I or II center in the Salt Lake Valley.
  • Take pictures of both vehicles, the lanes, the traffic control and anything left on the road.
  • Ask witnesses for a phone number; commuters heading to I-80 will not wait around.
  • Tell your insurer about the crash to start PIP benefits, and avoid a recorded statement to the other insurer until you have been treated.
