Woods Cross Roads That Produce Claims

Woods Cross has about 11,400 residents (11,410 in the 2020 census), yet its streets also carry freeway traffic, a refinery's tanker trucks and commuters racing for a FrontRunner train. Most serious crashes in town trace back to one of five places.

500 South (SR-68) and the I-15 interchange

Redwood Road turns east onto 500 South here and crosses I-15 at a diverging diamond interchange on the Bountiful line. Heavy turning volume, drivers unsure of the crossover and shopping traffic headed toward Bountiful make this the most complicated intersection in town.

Legacy Parkway, exit 4

Woods Cross has its own Legacy Parkway interchange connecting to 500 South. Semis have been allowed and the limit has been 65 mph since 2020, and the road runs through long dark stretches beside the marsh, so crashes on and off these ramps tend to happen at speed.

800 West and the FrontRunner station

The Woods Cross FrontRunner station sits at 750 South 800 West with about 230 park-and-ride spaces. Mornings and evenings, drivers hurrying for a train, riders walking to their cars and neighborhood traffic all share 800 West.

The refinery and fuel-truck traffic

HF Sinclair operates a refinery in Woods Cross, northwest of the station. Tanker trucks entering and leaving turn slowly across lanes, and a crash with one becomes a commercial claim against the carrier as well as its driver.

Rail crossings

Freight and commuter tracks run north-south through the west side of the city. A crossing collision brings in the railroad, and the gates, signals and sight lines at that crossing become part of the evidence.

Who investigates

The Woods Cross Police Department takes crashes on city streets, and Utah Highway Patrol troopers generally cover I-15 and Legacy Parkway. A claim that involves a government-owned vehicle, UDOT, UTA or a defect in a city road requires a written notice of claim within one year (Utah Code § 63G-7-402).

Medical Bills: PIP First

Utah's no-fault system means your own policy's personal injury protection pays first: at least $3,000 in medical expenses and, if you miss work, the lesser of $250 a week or 85% of lost gross income for up to 52 weeks (Utah Code § 31A-22-307). How Utah PIP works.

A trip to the emergency department at Lakeview Hospital in Bountiful plus imaging can burn through that $3,000 quickly. Claiming non-economic damages from the at-fault driver requires one of the following under Utah Code § 31A-22-309:

  • Medical expenses past the $3,000 mark
  • Any broken bone
  • Objectively documented permanent impairment
  • Lasting, permanent disfigurement
  • A dismemberment injury
  • Death resulting from the collision

Meet any one and the negligent driver's liability coverage answers for the full claim; your own UIM coverage can pay above it when those limits are too low. Underinsured motorist claims explained.

Comparative Fault in Woods Cross

Your recovery falls by your share of fault, and it disappears unless the combined fault of those you sue exceeds your own (Utah Code § 78B-5-818).

Near the refinery, the tanker company's insurer will say you should have seen the truck turning. On Legacy Parkway it will ask about your speed after dark, and near the station, whether the pedestrian was in a crosswalk. Photographs, fleet dashcam footage and nearby business video can answer, but video is routinely recorded over.

Time limits

Four years for most injury lawsuits from a crash (§ 78B-2-307), two for wrongful death, and one year for notice against a government entity such as UDOT, UTA, Davis County or Woods Cross City. See our deadline guide.

Woods Cross Crash Cases

Tanker and commercial truck crashes

Collisions with fuel and freight trucks on the refinery approaches and 500 South. Hours-of-service logs and electronic data belong to the carrier and must be preserved quickly. More in Utah truck accident claims.

Diverging diamond and ramp crashes

Turning and crossover collisions at 500 South and I-15, and merge impacts on the Legacy Parkway ramps, where a driver whose lane is ending must yield under Utah Code § 41-6a-903.

Commuter and station-area crashes

Drivers and pedestrians around the FrontRunner lots on 800 West, including people struck while walking between the platform and their cars.

Railroad crossing crashes

Collisions at the city's at-grade crossings, where the adequacy of warning devices and the railroad's maintenance can be at issue along with the driver's conduct.

Uninsured and fleeing drivers

Uninsured motorist coverage on your policy can respond to a driver with no insurance or one who flees. For a no-contact crash, § 31A-22-305(6) requires clear and convincing evidence of the other car beyond your own account, so a witness's number is worth getting.

What to Do After a Woods Cross Crash

  • Call 911, and before leaving get the case number and the agency: Woods Cross Police in the city, or the Highway Patrol on I-15 and Legacy.
  • Be seen the same day. Lakeview Hospital in Bountiful has around-the-clock emergency care and is designated a Level III trauma center.
  • Photograph the vehicles, the roadway, any crossing gates or signals, and a commercial truck's company name and unit number.
  • Get names and phone numbers from bystanders and train riders who saw it.
  • Report to your own insurer to start PIP, and decline recorded statements for the other side. How attorneys deal with insurers.
