Brigham City's Crash-Prone Roads

Brigham City, the Box Elder County seat, counted 19,650 residents at the 2020 census and sits against the Wellsville Mountains where several travel corridors converge. I-15 and I-84 run together along the west side of town, US-91 leaves the interstate at exit 362 on the 1100 South bypass, US-89 arrives from the south, and the two federal routes then climb east together into Box Elder Canyon on the way to Cache Valley.

US-89/91 over Sardine Summit

East of town the highway climbs through Box Elder Canyon past Mantua, crosses Sardine Summit and descends through Wellsville Canyon toward Logan. Steep grades, winter storms and semis bound for Cache Valley mean collisions here tend to happen at speed, and the argument afterward is usually whether someone slowed for snow or drifted over the center line.

SR-13 and the downtown blocks

SR-13 starts at the US-89/91 junction on the south end of the city, runs north through town, then bends west toward I-15 and on across the Bear River to Corinne. Downtown, a 1928 arch spans Main Street welcoming visitors to the 'World's Greatest Wild Bird Refuge,' and parked cars, crosswalks and turning traffic along that frontage lead to side-impact and backing collisions.

The 1100 South bypass (US-91)

US-91 begins at I-15 exit 362 and skirts the south side of the city on 1100 South before meeting US-89. Drivers leaving the freeway at highway speed run into local traffic, turning trucks and traffic signals, so rear-end and angle crashes near the ramps are a recurring pattern.

SR-38 north toward Honeyville

From the north end of the city, SR-38 follows the west edge of the Wellsville Mountains through Harper Ward, Honeyville and Deweyville to Collinston. Farm equipment, orchard traffic and residents turning into driveways share this rural route with commuters, and a head-on or run-off-road crash out there can mean a long wait for help.

Peach Days, campuses and visitors

Peach Days fills the weekend after Labor Day with a parade, a car show and a carnival, drawing visitors who do not know the local streets. On weekdays, students travel to USU Brigham City and Bridgerland Technical College. When the other driver lives out of the area, getting their license, plate and insurance card at the scene saves weeks of chasing later.

Which agency responds

Brigham City Police handle collisions on city streets, and the Box Elder County Sheriff's Office, based at 52 South 1000 West, covers unincorporated county roads. On I-15, I-84 and the canyon highway, a trooper or a deputy may respond depending on the exact location. A crash involving a snowplow, a UDOT work zone or a city or county vehicle requires a written notice of claim within one year under Utah Code § 63G-7-402.

No-Fault Benefits Come First

Utah Code § 31A-22-307 makes your own personal injury protection the first payer, whoever was to blame: at least $3,000 toward medical care, plus 85% of lost gross income capped at $250 a week for up to 52 weeks. How Utah's no-fault system works.

Brigham City Community Hospital is a state-designated Level IV trauma center, so a serious injury may mean a transfer to McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden (Level II) or Logan Regional Hospital (Level III), and ambulance miles alone can consume that $3,000. If you have or must carry PIP, general damages such as pain and suffering open up only once you meet one condition in Utah Code § 31A-22-309(1):

  • Medical expenses that exceed $3,000
  • A fracture
  • Objectively documented permanent disability or impairment
  • Permanent disfigurement of any kind
  • Dismemberment, the loss of a limb
  • Death

Clearing that bar exposes the at-fault driver's liability policy to the full claim. Where that driver carries only minimum limits, your own underinsured motorist coverage may add to what they pay; read our UIM overview.

Dividing Fault in Box Elder County

Utah Code § 78B-5-818 reduces what you receive by your share of the blame and allows recovery only when the combined fault of those you sue exceeds your own.

Around Brigham City, expect the insurer to ask whether you were going too fast for a snowy grade below Sardine Summit, whether a pedestrian stepped out between parked cars downtown, or whether a truck coming off the interstate had room to merge. Photos of the road surface, trucking records and statements from people who stopped answer those questions, and canyon evidence can vanish with the next storm.

Time limits

You generally have four years to file an injury suit and two years for wrongful death. Claims against Brigham City, Box Elder County or UDOT need a notice of claim within one year. See the Utah filing deadlines guide.

Brigham City Crash Claims We Pursue

Canyon and mountain-pass crashes

Head-on, rollover and slide-off collisions on US-89/91 between Brigham City and Cache Valley, where weather reports and plow records matter. Our Logan car accident page covers the Cache Valley side of the pass.

Interstate and ramp collisions

On I-15 and I-84 west of town and at the exit 362 and SR-13 interchanges, where semis and travelers mix with local drivers. A commercial carrier's logs and electronic data should be requested before they are overwritten; see our truck crash guide.

Downtown and intersection crashes

Angle, left-turn and backing collisions along the downtown blocks and at the signals on the 1100 South bypass. Utah Code § 41-6a-903 requires a driver turning left to yield to oncoming vehicles near enough to pose an immediate hazard.

Rural highway crashes

Collisions with tractors, deer and slow-moving vehicles on SR-38 and on SR-13 toward Corinne, often far from the nearest emergency room and without anyone who saw it happen.

Uninsured and hit-and-run drivers

If the responsible driver had no insurance or drove away, your uninsured motorist coverage may pay. When that vehicle never made contact, Utah Code § 31A-22-305(6) requires clear and convincing evidence beyond your own word that it existed. See our hit-and-run guide.

What to Do After a Brigham City Crash

  • Call 911, and before leaving ask whether Brigham City Police, the sheriff or a trooper is writing the report; write down the case number.
  • Get medical care today, even if you feel fine. Brigham City Community Hospital can stabilize you, and serious trauma may be transferred to a higher-level center in Ogden or Logan.
  • Photograph every vehicle, the road surface, any snow or ice, skid marks and the sign or signal you faced.
  • Write down names and phone numbers of witnesses; canyon traffic and travelers on I-15 rarely come back.
  • Report the crash to your own insurer to start PIP, and decline recorded interviews with the other driver's carrier until your treatment is under way. How attorneys handle insurance claims.
