Where Coalville Collisions Happen

Coalville is the Summit County seat, set in the Weber River valley beside I-80. Just north, I-84 ends at a directional T interchange with I-80 south of Echo, next to Echo Reservoir, so traffic bound for Ogden, Idaho and Wyoming all funnels past town. To the south, SR-32 leaves I-80 at Wanship toward Kamas. Many of the drivers in a Coalville crash are only passing through.

I-80 past Coalville

A high-speed interstate with heavy truck volume. Chain collisions, sudden slowdowns in storms and lane-change sideswipes cause the serious crashes, and a semi's electronic data must be preserved quickly; see our truck accident guide.

The I-80 and I-84 junction at Echo

Where one interstate ends into another, drivers choose lanes late and trucks merge at speed. Weaving collisions and trailer strikes follow.

100 South (SR-280)

A state route of well under half a mile linking the I-80 interchange with Main Street. Drivers leaving the freeway carry interstate speed onto a town street.

Main Street

County business and local shops share a short main street. Turning and backing collisions, and pedestrians crossing to offices and stores, are the everyday risks.

Chalk Creek and the ranch roads

East of town the roads turn rural, with gravel stretches, livestock and no lighting. Single-vehicle and farm-equipment crashes are common, and fencing and signage can matter.

Who investigates

The Utah Highway Patrol handles crashes on I-80 and I-84. Off the interstate, reports in the Coalville area generally come from the Summit County Sheriff's Office, whose main office is at 6138 Paintbrush Road near Park City, so the report may be held there rather than in town. If snow removal, a work zone or a public vehicle contributed, Utah Code § 63G-7-402 requires a notice of claim within one year.

PIP Is the First Payer

Utah's no-fault rules put your own personal injury protection to work first: $3,000 or more for medical care and 85% of lost gross earnings, no more than $250 a week, for up to 52 weeks (Utah Code § 31A-22-307). Read how PIP works.

Park City Hospital, a Level IV center, is the nearest designated trauma hospital; the most serious injuries go on to McKay-Dee in Ogden (Level II) or a Level I center in Salt Lake City. An ambulance or helicopter over that distance can consume PIP on its own. Utah Code § 31A-22-309 lets you pursue non-economic damages from the driver at fault only with:

  • Medical expenses exceeding $3,000
  • A bone fracture
  • Permanent disability or impairment supported by objective evidence
  • Permanent disfigurement of any kind
  • The loss of a body part
  • A death

Satisfy one and the other driver's liability insurer must answer for all of your losses. Long-haul trucks usually carry larger policies than passenger cars, but when any policy falls short your UIM coverage applies on top.

Weather and Fault on I-80

Under Utah Code § 78B-5-818 you recover only if the defendants' combined fault exceeds yours, and your share of fault reduces the award.

After a winter pileup every insurer points at the storm and at the car behind it. Snow is not a defense for a trucker who followed too closely or a driver who changed lanes into you at the Echo merge. Dashcam video, the tow and plow timeline, and the order of impacts separate one collision from the next.

When to act

Most injury suits must be filed within four years, wrongful death within two, and a notice of claim against Coalville City, Summit County or UDOT within one year. See the deadline guide.

Coalville Crash Cases

Tractor-trailer collisions

Crashes with semis on I-80 and I-84, where the carrier, its insurer and sometimes a trailer owner are all part of the claim, and driver logs must be demanded early.

Winter pileups

Multi-vehicle chains in snow and blowing conditions, where each impact has to be separated to show which injuries came from which hit.

Echo merge crashes

Sideswipes and rear-end collisions where I-84 traffic joins I-80, often involving a driver who realized the split too late.

Road-condition and plow claims

Crashes tied to untreated ice, work zones or snowplows. A claim against UDOT or the county runs on the one-year notice rule, not the four-year limit.

Uninsured and hit-and-run drivers

When the at-fault driver is uninsured or never stops, your own uninsured motorist coverage usually pays, and the PIP threshold does not limit that claim.

What to Do After a Coalville Crash

  • Call 911, give your exit or mile marker, and get the case number and the name of the responding agency.
  • Get a same-day exam at Park City Hospital or wherever EMS takes you; adrenaline masks fractures and head injuries.
  • Photograph the road surface, the weather, lane positions and every vehicle before plows and wreckers change the scene.
  • Take contact details from witnesses and other drivers; interstate travelers will soon be in another state.
  • Report to your own insurer to start PIP, and decline a recorded interview with the other carrier until you know your injuries.

Summit County car crash suits are filed in the Third District Court at the Silver Summit Justice Center. Most resolve before trial, but the case should be built from day one as if it will be tried.
