Where Herriman Crashes Happen

Herriman grew from farm country into a city of roughly 60,000 in about two decades, and its road network is still catching up. Subdivisions open before the arterials that serve them are finished, dump trucks and concrete mixers share lanes with school traffic, and most commuters leave town on the same few routes at the same hours. Every Herriman street is ranked by its crash record on our Herriman’s most dangerous roads page.

Mountain View Corridor (SR-85)

The west-side route tying Herriman to the rest of the valley. Near-freeway speeds meet signalized cross streets, and a driver pulling onto the corridor from a side street can badly misjudge how quickly traffic is closing.

Bangerter Highway (SR-154)

A fast highway that mixes newer interchanges with remaining signals. A driver still carrying highway speed into a signalized crossing turns a red-light mistake into a severe broadside.

13400 South and Herriman Boulevard

The connectors through the city's shopping and residential core, crowded at the start and end of the school day with commuters, parents and construction vehicles in the same lanes.

School zones and neighborhood streets

Herriman is a young city with a lot of children on foot and on bikes. Utah Code § 41-6a-601 sets a 20 mph limit in a reduced-speed school zone, and backing and crosswalk crashes involving kids come up again and again.

Work zones in a growing city

Lane shifts, temporary signals and fresh pavement change from month to month. When signs or barriers were inadequate, a contractor or public agency may share responsibility, and the layout on the day of the crash must be recorded before it changes again.

Reporting agencies in Herriman

The Herriman Police Department, at 5355 West Main Street, takes crashes on city streets, and the Utah Highway Patrol may handle a crash on a state highway. If a city vehicle, a signal fault or a public work zone played a part, a one-year notice of claim applies.

PIP Comes Before Fault

Utah is no-fault for the first layer of benefits: your own personal injury protection pays at least $3,000 of medical expenses and 85% of lost gross income, up to $250 per week for as many as 52 weeks, whoever caused the crash (Utah Code § 31A-22-307). Read how no-fault works in Utah.

An ambulance to Intermountain Riverton Hospital and a CT scan can reach that figure within hours. To pursue the at-fault driver for pain, suffering and other general damages, Utah Code § 31A-22-309 requires one of these:

  • Medical costs greater than $3,000
  • A fractured bone
  • Permanent impairment or disability based on objective findings
  • Permanent disfigurement
  • Dismemberment
  • A fatal injury

Satisfy one and the at-fault driver's insurer is responsible for the entire claim. If that policy runs out, underinsured motorist coverage on your own policy can make up some or all of the difference.

Comparing Fault in Herriman Cases

Utah Code § 78B-5-818 cuts what you recover by your percentage of fault and eliminates recovery if you are found 50% or more at fault.

On Mountain View Corridor and Bangerter the dispute is often who had the green light. When a driver pulls out of a driveway or parking lot, Utah Code § 41-6a-903 requires yielding to traffic already on the road. When a child is hurt, insurers like to say the child darted out, but the driver's speed and attention near schools and parks still count. Photos of the lane layout, dashcam clips and doorbell video need to be saved quickly.

Deadlines

Four years for most crash injury claims (§ 78B-2-307), two for wrongful death, and a one-year notice of claim if Herriman City, UDOT or another public body may be responsible, as with a work zone (§ 63G-7-402). See the deadline guide.

Herriman Car Crash Cases We Handle

Highway-speed intersection crashes

On Bangerter Highway and Mountain View Corridor, where a signal violation at speed causes broadside and head-on impacts.

Construction and work-zone crashes

Heavy trucks and lane shifts around new development. We request commercial vehicle data and driver logs early, before they can be discarded. See our truck accident guide.

Commuter rear-end crashes

On 13400 South and the routes toward I-15 at rush hour. Soft-tissue injuries from rear-end impacts often appear days later, and insurers use the delay against you.

Children, pedestrians and cyclists

Kids walking to school, riders on neighborhood streets and families crossing near parks. Drivers must yield in crosswalks under § 41-6a-1002; our bicycle and pedestrian guides cover these claims.

Drivers with no coverage

Uninsured and hit-and-run drivers usually push the claim onto your own UM coverage. For a phantom vehicle that never made contact, § 31A-22-305 requires clear and convincing evidence that goes beyond your own testimony, so a neighbor's camera or a witness can make the difference.

Steps After a Herriman Crash

  • Call 911. Herriman Police respond inside the city, and the Highway Patrol may take a crash on a state highway; get the case number and the agency's name.
  • Get medical care that day. Intermountain Riverton Hospital is a Level IV trauma center that evaluates and stabilizes, and the most serious injuries go on to the Level I center at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray. Children in particular under-report pain.
  • Photograph the striping, cones, signs and signals as they looked, along with the vehicles and debris; the layout may be different within weeks.
  • Get names and numbers from witnesses, and note nearby homes with doorbell cameras.
  • Start your PIP claim and decline a recorded statement to the other insurer, especially if it asks to interview your child. Learn how attorneys deal with insurers.

If a Herriman crash case is filed, it goes to the Third Judicial District Court for Salt Lake County, which hears cases at the West Jordan courthouse, 8080 South Redwood Road, and the Matheson Courthouse, 450 South State Street. We prepare every case for trial even though most resolve without one. See our Herriman personal injury page and how a Utah injury case unfolds, or call (801) 921-5134. Free consultation.
