Holladay Roads Behind Most Collisions

Holladay is a residential city, yet I-215 runs down its east side with three interchanges inside city limits, at 3300 South, 3900 South and 4500 South. Drivers leaving the freeway reach narrow, tree-lined streets within a few hundred feet, and the village center draws shoppers and diners onto roads laid out for far fewer cars. For the streets with the most crashes in UDOT’s records, see Holladay’s most dangerous roads.

Highland Drive

The city's main north-south street, lined with side-street stop signs, driveways into small shopping centers and people walking between them. A driver edging out from a side street to see past parked cars, meeting an oncoming driver who does not slow, is the setup for many broadside crashes here.

4500 South (SR-266)

A state route that climbs from Murray through Holladay toward its end near Wasatch Boulevard, meeting I-215 on the way. Grades, curves near the bench and school-hour traffic mix with commuters heading for the freeway, and rear-end impacts at the signals follow.

I-215 exits at 3300, 3900 and 4500 South

Three interchanges in a short stretch keep vehicles constantly merging on and off the belt route. Freeway-speed crashes, and ramp-end collisions where exiting traffic meets a red light or a stopped queue, produce some of the most serious injuries in the city.

Holladay Boulevard and the neighborhood collectors

Winding, with stretches that lack a continuous sidewalk, these streets put runners, cyclists and dog walkers in the same lane as cut-through drivers. A driver who drifts over the center line on a curve, or squeezes past a rider, is often the cause.

2300 East and 3900 South

2300 East runs past Holladay City Hall at 4580 South, and 3900 South crosses the northern part of the city toward the freeway. Both are residential collectors carrying more cars than their width suggests, with left turns into subdivisions and school pick-up lines stacking into the travel lane.

Who responds to a Holladay crash

Holladay contracts with the Unified Police Department for all of its police services, and UPD's Holladay Precinct is based at City Hall, 4580 South 2300 East. The Utah Highway Patrol takes I-215. Because 4500 South is a UDOT highway and other streets belong to the city, a crash tied to a signal failure, a construction zone or a public vehicle means identifying the right government owner and filing a notice of claim within one year.

PIP Pays First After a Holladay Crash

Personal injury protection on your own Utah policy pays no matter who caused the crash: a minimum of $3,000 for medical treatment, and the lesser of $250 a week or 85% of lost gross income for up to 52 weeks (Utah Code § 31A-22-307). How Utah no-fault works.

An ER visit at St. Mark's Hospital or Intermountain Medical Center, plus imaging, can exhaust that before follow-up care begins. Utah Code § 31A-22-309 lets you sue the at-fault driver for general damages like pain and suffering only after one of these:

  • More than $3,000 in medical expenses
  • A bone fracture
  • Permanent disability or permanent impairment based on objective findings
  • Permanent disfigurement
  • Dismemberment
  • Death

Past that point, the other driver's liability policy is responsible for the full claim, and when its limits fall short, underinsured motorist coverage on your own policy can add to it. Read about UIM claims.

Shared Fault on Holladay Streets

Utah Code § 78B-5-818 lets you recover only if the defendants' combined fault is greater than yours, and it cuts your award by your own share. At an even split, you recover nothing.

Holladay disputes tend to center on visibility. The other side will say you pulled from a side street on Highland Drive without looking past parked cars, or that you rode too far into the lane on Holladay Boulevard. Utah Code § 41-6a-903 requires a driver turning left to yield to oncoming traffic close enough to be a hazard, and a driver entering from a driveway to yield to traffic already on the road. Photos taken from each driver's position, home security video and the UPD report are what answer those arguments.

Holladay deadlines

Most injury claims: four years (Utah Code § 78B-2-307). Wrongful death: two years (§ 78B-2-304). A claim against Holladay City, Salt Lake County, UDOT or UTA: a written notice of claim within one year (§ 63G-7-402). Our deadline guide has the details.

Holladay Crash Claims We Pursue

Side-street and driveway crashes

On Highland Drive, 2300 East and 3900 South, where short sight lines and parked cars turn an ordinary turn into a broadside collision.

I-215 and ramp crashes

Merges and queues at the 3300, 3900 and 4500 South interchanges. Onboard vehicle data and any commercial driver logs can be overwritten, so we request them right away.

Cyclist and runner collisions

On Holladay Boulevard and residential streets without sidewalks, where the question is whether the driver gave enough room. See our bicycle injury guide.

Pedestrian crashes

Walkers struck near Holladay's shops, schools and bus stops. Under Utah Code § 41-6a-1002 a driver must slow or stop for a person in a crosswalk on the driver's half of the road; our pedestrian claims guide explains the rest.

Hit-and-run and uninsured drivers

Uninsured motorist coverage on your own policy usually steps in. When the other vehicle caused the crash without making contact, Utah Code § 31A-22-305(6) requires clear and convincing evidence of that vehicle beyond your own word, which is why an independent witness matters.

What to Do After a Holladay Crash

  • Call 911. On city streets an officer from UPD's Holladay Precinct will respond; on I-215 it will be the Highway Patrol. Write down the case number before you leave.
  • Get evaluated the same day. St. Mark's Hospital in Millcreek is a state-designated Level II trauma center, and Intermountain Medical Center in Murray is Level I. Pain from neck and head injuries often builds over the next day.
  • Photograph the view from where each driver sat, including hedges, parked cars and signs, along with vehicle positions and damage.
  • Get contact information from witnesses, and ask neighbors whether their doorbell cameras face the street.
  • Start a PIP claim with your insurer, and do not give a recorded statement to the other driver's insurer yet. Learn how attorneys deal with insurers.

Holladay injury suits are filed in the Third Judicial District Court for Salt Lake County, which sits at the Matheson Courthouse, 450 South State Street, and in West Jordan at 8080 South Redwood Road. A traffic ticket written after the crash is handled separately from your injury claim. Most claims settle, but we prepare each as if it will be tried.
