Hit on your motorcycle on Highland Drive, 4500 South, Holladay Boulevard or an I-215 exit? Free case review, and no attorney fees unless we win.
Holladay looks quiet, but three I-215 interchanges sit inside city limits, at 3300 South, 3900 South and 4500 South. Riders come off the belt route at freeway speed and within a few hundred feet are on narrow, tree-lined streets with hedges, parked cars and side-street stop signs. 4500 South (SR-266) also climbs through town toward its end near Wasatch Boulevard.
Our legal team focuses on the question these crashes usually turn on: what could each driver actually see? Sight lines, hedges, parked vans and low sun can all matter, and neighbors' doorbell cameras record over themselves quickly. For injuries that did not happen on a motorcycle, see our Holladay personal injury page.
Holladay's Motorcycle Crash Pattern
A familiar Holladay crash is the pull-out. A driver edges forward past parked cars on Highland Drive, looks for cars rather than a narrow motorcycle, and goes. A driver leaving a driveway or parking lot must yield to all traffic on the road, and a driver turning left must yield to oncoming vehicles close enough to be an immediate hazard, both under Utah Code § 41-6a-903. At a stop-sign side street, the question is whether the driver stopped and looked properly before entering.
Utah Law Holladay Riders Should Know
Filtering at signals. Section 41-6a-704(6) lets a motorcyclist ease past stopped vehicles in the same direction only on multi-lane roads posted 45 mph or less, or on multi-lane off-ramps, and never on an on-ramp; the pass must be at no more than 15 mph and made safely. At an I-215 exit, an off-ramp with two or more lanes can qualify; the ramp onto the freeway cannot. Details are in our lane filtering explainer.
Helmets. Riders under 21 must wear approved headgear. Under § 41-6a-1505(6), an adult's choice to ride without one is not treated as negligence and is not admissible on negligence, injuries or damage mitigation in a civil lawsuit.
PIP does not follow you onto the bike. Under § 31A-22-302, motorcycle policies need not include personal injury protection, and riders operating a motorcycle are not covered by it. Health coverage or optional med-pay usually handles early treatment; our motorcycle claims guide explains how those payments are sorted out at settlement.
Low policy limits. Since January 1, 2025, new and renewed Utah auto policies must carry at least $30,000 of bodily-injury liability per person (§ 31A-22-304(2)), which a single trauma admission can consume. UIM coverage on your own policy can add to it.
Deadlines. Most injury claims: four years. A death: two years (§ 78B-2-304). A claim against Holladay City, Salt Lake County, UDOT or UTA: a written notice of claim within one year (§ 63G-7-402). See our statute of limitations page.
Holladay Streets Riders Share
Highland Drive is the main north-south street, with small shopping centers, driveways and people walking between them. Holladay Boulevard and the neighborhood collectors wind through town, some stretches without a continuous sidewalk, so runners, cyclists and dog walkers use the same lane riders do. 2300 East and 3900 South carry more traffic than their width suggests, with left turns into subdivisions and school pick-up lines backing into the travel lane.
Holladay contracts with the Unified Police Department, whose Holladay Precinct works out of City Hall at 4580 South 2300 East, for crashes on city streets. The Utah Highway Patrol takes I-215. Because 4500 South is a UDOT highway and most other streets belong to the city, a crash tied to a signal or a work zone means identifying the right owner early.
How Holladay Motorcycle Crashes Happen
Ramp-end collisions where traffic leaving I-215 meets a red light or a stopped queue. Rear-end hits at the 4500 South signals. Drivers cutting across a rider's lane to reach a subdivision on 2300 East. A car drifting over the center line on a Holladay Boulevard curve. Loose gravel, fallen leaves and wet pavement can make any of these worse.
Common Rider Injuries
Motorcyclists hurt in Holladay may suffer concussions and brain injuries, broken collarbones, arms and ankles, knee ligament damage, spinal fractures and road rash that can become infected. St. Mark's Hospital in Millcreek is a state-designated Level II trauma center, and Intermountain Medical Center in Murray is Level I.
Compensation a Holladay Rider Can Pursue
- Financial losses: emergency and specialist care, medication, therapy, the income you missed and will miss, and repair or replacement of the bike, helmet, jacket and boots.
- Pain and quality of life: physical suffering, emotional distress, and the everyday activities and riding time you lost.
- Permanent effects: disability, disfigurement and the future medical care they require.
- Punitive damages: available only for conduct like impaired or knowingly reckless driving, and rarely awarded.
Pushing Back When Insurers Blame the Rider
The other side will say you came around the curve too fast or that nobody could have seen you. Utah's modified comparative fault rule, § 78B-5-818, reduces your award by your percentage and bars it unless the defendants' combined fault is greater than yours. Photos taken from each driver's seat position, the UPD report and neighborhood video answer those claims. Our Holladay car accident page has more local detail, and the steps in a Utah injury case explain how a claim moves.

Holladay Motorcycle Accident Questions
A driver pulled out of a driveway on Highland Drive in front of me. Is that driver at fault?
Usually. Utah Code § 41-6a-903(1)(b) requires a driver entering a road from anywhere other than another road, such as a driveway or parking lot, to yield to all approaching vehicles. Photos of the sight line from the driveway help answer any claim that you appeared too fast.
Does riding without a helmet affect my Holladay claim?
Not legally. Under Utah Code § 41-6a-1505(6), failure to wear protective headgear is not contributory or comparative negligence and may not be introduced as evidence on negligence, injuries or mitigation of damages.
Why won't PIP pay after my motorcycle crash?
Utah law does not require PIP on motorcycle policies, and riders are not covered by PIP for injuries while operating a motorcycle (Utah Code § 31A-22-302). Health insurance, med-pay and the at-fault driver's liability coverage are the usual sources instead.
Can I filter to the front at an I-215 exit in Holladay?
On an off-ramp with two or more lanes in your direction, Utah Code § 41-6a-704(6) allows it if the vehicles are stopped, you stay at 15 mph or less, and it is safe. It is never allowed on an on-ramp, and on surface streets the road must have two or more lanes each way with a limit of 45 mph or less.
How are your fees structured?
On contingency. You pay nothing up front, and no attorney fees unless we win. The fee is a percentage of the recovery, and your written agreement explains how case costs are handled.
How long do I have after a Holladay motorcycle crash?
Four years for most injury claims and two years for a wrongful death claim. If a city vehicle, UTA bus or road condition is involved, Utah Code § 63G-7-402 requires a notice of claim within one year, so do not wait.
