Riders come to Logan for US-89 through Logan Canyon, the scenic byway that climbs from the canyon mouth toward Bear Lake, and for the long four-lane grade of US-89/91 over Sardine Summit. Getting to either one means crossing town: Main Street, which carries US-91 downtown, and the faster state routes on the west and south sides, 1000 West (SR-252), 200 North (SR-30) and Highway 91 (US-91).
Where a Cache Valley motorcycle crash happened usually shapes the whole claim. In town, the proof is about signals, turn lanes and driveways. In the canyons, it is about curves, sight distance, loose gravel and weather. Our legal team helps Logan riders gather both kinds of evidence before it is lost. For injuries that did not involve a motorcycle, see our Logan personal injury page.
Where Logan's Serious Crashes Concentrate
UDOT's records for every crash type on Logan streets, January 1, 2018 through August 4, 2025, put the deadliest roads outside downtown. 1000 West (SR-252), Highway 91 (US-91) and 200 North (SR-30) together recorded 1,448 crashes, 52 of them serious or fatal, and 11 deaths. Among the fifteen busiest streets, Highway 91 (US-91) has the highest serious-or-fatal share, 3.9%, followed by 1000 West (SR-252) at 3.7%. These figures are not limited to motorcycles; our Logan's most dangerous roads page explains how they were compiled.
Utah Law That Shapes a Rider's Claim
No PIP for the rider. A motorcycle policy does not have to include personal injury protection, and riders are not covered by PIP for injuries suffered while operating one (§ 31A-22-302). That means the no-fault threshold that limits car occupants' claims for general damages does not apply to you as the rider. Early bills usually go to health insurance or optional medical payments coverage; our motorcycle claims guide explains the order.
Helmets. Anyone under 21 riding or operating a motorcycle on a highway must wear a compliant helmet. At any age, though, § 41-6a-1505(6) says going without one is not contributory or comparative negligence and may not be offered in a civil case as evidence on negligence, injuries or mitigation of damages.
Lane filtering. Under § 41-6a-704(6), a motorcyclist may pass a stopped vehicle in the same lane only on a roadway with two or more adjacent lanes in the same direction and a speed limit of 45 mph or less, or on a multi-lane off-ramp; never on an on-ramp; at 15 mph or less; and only when the move can be made safely. No interstate passes through Logan, so filtering disputes here usually turn on the posted limit and whether traffic had actually stopped. Our lane filtering article goes through each condition.
A three-foot buffer. Utah's vulnerable-user statute lists motorcyclists alongside pedestrians and bicyclists, and it prohibits a driver from knowingly, intentionally or recklessly operating within three feet of one (§ 41-6a-706.5). On two-lane canyon roads, where cars pass riders, that rule matters.
Low limits, short notice. Utah's minimum bodily injury liability limit is $30,000 per person on policies issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2025 (§ 31A-22-304), so underinsured motorist coverage often matters. If a road defect or a government vehicle was involved, a notice of claim to Logan City, Cache County or the state is due within one year (§ 63G-7-402); most injury suits allow four years and wrongful death two. See our deadline guide.
Canyon Curves and Valley Traffic
The curves are why riders love Logan Canyon, and they are also where riders get hurt: a car or RV crossing the center line, a trailer swinging wide, gravel or wet leaves in the shade, an animal on the road. Utah Code § 41-6a-601 requires a reasonable and prudent speed when approaching and going around a curve or traveling a narrow or winding roadway, which binds the driver who drifted over the line as much as the rider. In Sardine Canyon the issues shift to merging trucks, speed differences on the grade and winter surfaces.
Inside Logan, the city police handle most crashes. In the canyons and on highways outside town, the Utah Highway Patrol or the Cache County Sheriff's Office may take the report, depending on the location. Ask which agency responded and write down the case number before you leave.
How Logan Riders Get Hit
A pickup turning left from Main Street into a parking lot across a rider's path; a driver nosing out of a 1000 West business driveway; a car following too closely in the 400 North queue; a vehicle drifting across the center line on a Logan Canyon bend; a farm truck slowing to turn into a field on a west-side road. Utah Code § 41-6a-903 puts the yield duty on the left-turning driver when oncoming traffic is close enough to be an immediate hazard, and on a driver entering from a driveway toward everyone already on the road.
Rider Injuries and Where They Are Treated
Riders absorb a crash with their bodies: brain injuries even through a helmet, broken collarbones, wrists and legs, spinal injuries, road rash that may need grafting, and crushed feet and ankles. Logan Regional Hospital is designated a Level III trauma center on the Utah Bureau of EMS list. The closest Level II centers, McKay-Dee Hospital and Ogden Regional Medical Center, are in Ogden, and Utah's Level I centers are all in Salt Lake County.
What a Rider Can Recover
- Medical bills and income: emergency and trauma care, surgery, rehabilitation, lost wages and reduced earning capacity.
- Pain and quality of life: lasting pain, scarring, and the riding seasons and family time an injury takes.
- Your bike and gear: repair or replacement of the motorcycle, helmet, jacket and other protective equipment.
- A fatal crash: heirs or a personal representative may bring a wrongful death claim, generally within two years; see our wrongful death guide.
Answering the Claim That the Rider Was at Fault
On Cache Valley motorcycle claims, insurers often argue that the rider took a canyon curve too fast, filtered where it was not allowed, or was hard to see. The answers are physical: gouge and scrape marks, where the bike and the car came to rest, crush damage, sight lines at the driveway, dashcam and business video, and weather data. Utah lets you recover only if the other side's combined fault exceeds yours, and it reduces your award by your share (§ 78B-5-818), so every percentage point matters. Our Logan car accident page covers local reporting and roads, and our hit-and-run guide covers drivers who leave.

Answers for Motorcyclists Hurt in Cache Valley
A car crossed the center line in Logan Canyon and forced me off the road without touching me. Do I have a claim?
Possibly. A crash does not need contact to be the driver's fault. If the driver kept going and is never identified, Utah treats a vehicle that caused a crash and left the scene as uninsured, and its existence can be proven by clear and convincing evidence, which may be one person's testimony (Utah Code §§ 31A-22-305 and 78B-5-818).
Can I filter between lanes in Logan traffic?
Only past stopped traffic, at 15 mph or less, on a road with at least two lanes in your direction and a limit of 45 mph or lower, or on a multi-lane off-ramp, and only when it is safe. Riding between moving lanes is outside that permission.
I wasn't wearing a helmet. Will that reduce what I recover?
It should not. Utah law says going bareheaded is not contributory or comparative negligence, and the defense may not use it in a civil case as evidence about negligence, the extent of injuries or mitigation of damages (§ 41-6a-1505(6)).
Does PIP pay my medical bills after a motorcycle crash?
Usually not. Utah does not require PIP on motorcycle policies, and riders are not covered by PIP for injuries while operating a motorcycle. Health insurance, any medical payments coverage on your bike policy, and later the at-fault driver's insurer are the usual sources.
What will it cost me to hire your firm?
Nothing at the start. You pay nothing up front, and no attorney fees unless we win; the percentage fee and how case expenses are handled are set out in writing before any work begins.
How long do I have if a pothole or bad pavement caused my crash?
If a city street, county road or state highway defect contributed, a written notice of claim must reach the responsible government entity within one year. Working out who maintains that stretch, Logan City, Cache County or UDOT, is the first step.
