Hurt on a motorcycle in Ogden, in Ogden Canyon or on Trappers Loop? Free consultation, and no attorney fees unless we win.
Ogden sits at the mouth of some of the best riding in northern Utah. SR-39 climbs from 12th Street through Ogden Canyon toward Pineview and Huntsville, and Trappers Loop Road (SR-167) links the Ogden Valley with I-84 in Weber Canyon. The roads that draw riders from across the Wasatch Front also have narrow shoulders, tight curves and weather that changes by the mile, and when a driver misjudges a rider there, the injuries are rarely minor.
We represent riders hurt in and around Ogden, from the downtown grid to the canyon roads. The work starts with the question insurers like to skip: what the other driver saw, and when.
Where Ogden Riders Get Hurt
In town, the pattern is the one every rider knows: a driver turning left across Washington Boulevard or Harrison Boulevard who looks right at a motorcycle and still pulls out. Utah Code § 41-6a-903 requires a left-turning driver to yield to oncoming traffic close enough to be an immediate hazard. A motorcycle's smaller profile does not change that duty.
Utah Rules That Shape a Rider's Claim
Lane filtering. Utah lets a motorcycle move between stopped lanes at 15 mph or less on roads posted 45 mph or lower, under the conditions in Utah Code § 41-6a-704(6), never on an on-ramp and never between moving lanes. Our lane filtering guide covers each condition and the 2027 sunset date.
Helmets. Riders under 21 must wear one. For everyone, Utah Code § 41-6a-1505 says not wearing a helmet is not evidence of fault and cannot be used against you in a civil case.
No PIP on the bike. Motorcycle policies are not required to carry personal injury protection (Utah Code § 31A-22-302(2)), so the first-dollar medical coverage a car driver gets may not be there. Health insurance, any med-pay you bought and the at-fault driver's liability coverage carry more of the load. Our motorcycle claims guide explains how that plays out.
Thin coverage on the other side. Utah's liability minimum is $30,000 per person, and a serious crash in the canyon can pass that quickly. Your own underinsured motorist coverage is added on top of the at-fault policy rather than offset against it; see how UIM stacks in Utah.
Deadlines. Most injury claims must be filed within four years and wrongful death claims within two, while a claim involving a government vehicle or road condition needs a written notice within one year. Every deadline is on our statute of limitations page.
Ogden Canyon and Trappers Loop
SR-39 is 12th Street in town and becomes the Ogden River Scenic Byway past the canyon mouth, running east past Pineview Reservoir to Huntsville. Trappers Loop Road connects I-84 west of Mountain Green with the Ogden Valley. Both carry summer recreation traffic and winter traffic headed toward the ski areas, and both leave little room for a car drifting across the center line on a curve.
Up the canyon, crashes in unincorporated Weber County are usually handled by the Weber County Sheriff's Office; inside city limits it is Ogden City Police, and the Utah Highway Patrol covers I-15 and I-84. Ask which agency took the report.
How Ogden Motorcycle Crashes Happen
Most begin with a driver who did not see the bike or misjudged its speed: a left turn across a rider's path, a lane change on I-15 near the I-84 merge, a car nosing out of a Riverdale Road parking lot, or a driver crossing the center line in the canyon. Gravel, broken pavement and early-season ice also come up, and when a road defect is part of the cause, the one-year government notice clock starts running.
Injuries We See After Rider Crashes
Riders absorb the whole impact: head and brain injuries even with a helmet, spinal fractures, broken legs and pelvises, road rash that needs skin grafts, and amputations. Serious trauma from the Ogden area is typically taken to McKay-Dee Hospital, a Level II trauma center, and recovery is often measured in months.
What a Rider Can Recover
- Economic losses: medical care now and later, lost wages and earning capacity, and repair or replacement of the bike and gear.
- Non-economic losses: pain, emotional distress, and the loss of riding and the other activities that made up your life.
- Permanent-injury costs: long-term care and home changes when an injury does not fully heal.
- Punitive damages: possible in rare cases of especially reckless conduct, such as an impaired driver.
The Rider-Bias Playbook
Expect the adjuster to suggest you were speeding, splitting lanes or came out of nowhere. The answer is evidence gathered early: the scene, the damage to both vehicles, witness accounts, video from businesses along Washington Boulevard or Riverdale Road, and data from the other vehicle. When filtering was involved, whether each condition in § 41-6a-704(6) was met often decides fault. The steps in a Utah injury case explain what happens next.

Ogden Rider FAQs
A driver turned left in front of me on Washington Boulevard. Who is at fault?
Usually the turning driver. Utah Code § 41-6a-903 requires a driver turning left to yield to oncoming traffic close enough to be an immediate hazard, and a motorcycle counts. The insurer may still argue speed, so preserve the scene and witness information.
I wasn't wearing a helmet. Does that hurt my claim?
Under Utah Code § 41-6a-1505, not wearing a helmet is not evidence of fault and cannot be admitted in a civil case, so it cannot be used to cut your recovery for that reason. Riders under 21 are required to wear one.
Will my PIP cover a motorcycle crash near Ogden?
Often not. Utah does not require personal injury protection on motorcycle policies (Utah Code § 31A-22-302(2)), so check your policy for med-pay and review your uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage early.
Can I filter between stopped cars in Ogden traffic?
Only when every condition in Utah Code § 41-6a-704(6) is met: traffic ahead is stopped, there are two or more lanes in your direction, the posted limit is 45 mph or less, you go 15 mph or slower, and it is safe. Riding between moving lanes is still illegal.
What does it cost to hire a lawyer after a motorcycle crash?
There is no charge up front. Our fee is a percentage of what we recover, and there are no attorney fees unless we win. The written agreement explains how case costs are handled.
How long do I have after a crash in Ogden?
Four years for most injury claims and two for wrongful death, but only one year for a notice of claim if a government vehicle or road condition is involved. Canyon evidence like skid marks and debris is gone much sooner.
