Ogden has leaned into cycling. The city describes an extensive network of bike lanes and trails, has been named a Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists, and runs GREENbike bike share downtown with six docking stations and 60 bikes. The paved Ogden River Parkway gives riders a multi-use route through town, and to the east 12th Street becomes SR-39 through Ogden Canyon, while Trappers Loop Road (SR-167) links the Ogden Valley with I-84.
More bikes in town means more meetings with cars on Washington Boulevard, Harrison Boulevard and the streets around Weber State, and on canyon roads with little shoulder. The first story the driver's insurer tells is usually about the cyclist. Utah law gives a rider the rights of any other vehicle operator (§ 41-6a-1102). Our Ogden personal injury page covers other injury cases in the city.
Bike Rules That Matter in Ogden
Keep three feet away. Under Utah Code § 41-6a-706.5, a driver may not knowingly, intentionally or recklessly come within three feet of a bicyclist or try to push one off the road, and if the rider is hurt the offense becomes a class C misdemeanor. In Ogden Canyon, where the shoulder narrows or disappears, a driver who cannot pass with that room has to wait.
Right-edge riding and its limits. § 41-6a-1105 keeps slower riders near the right edge only when it is practicable. A cyclist can move left to pass, to turn left, to go straight past a right-turn-only lane, or to avoid gravel, parked cars, animals or a lane too narrow for a car and bike to share, a description that fits stretches of SR-39. Riders may go two abreast but must stay within a single lane and not impede normal traffic.
Insurance After an Ogden Bike Crash
Coverage usually comes from more than one place:
- The driver's bodily injury liability policy, which answers for pain, future care and lost earning capacity.
- Your own auto insurance, or that of a relative you live with: PIP may pay the first medical bills and part of lost wages even though you were on a bike, depending on how the policy defines who is covered, and uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage can apply when the driver had too little insurance or none. See our PIP guide.
Liability limits can be thin. The statutory floor is $30,000 per injured person on policies issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2025 (§ 31A-22-304), and an ambulance ride to McKay-Dee Hospital followed by surgery can outrun that. The statewide bicycle claims guide walks through the rest.
Fault Percentages, Helmets and Notice Deadlines
Utah compares fault: your recovery drops by your share and is barred unless the defendants together bear more of it than you (§ 78B-5-818). A bare head is not a weapon for the insurer here; § 41-6a-1505 covers riders under 21 on e-bikes and similar devices, not pedal bikes, and failing to wear a helmet is neither comparative negligence nor admissible in a civil case. The usual deadline is four years, but a claim against Ogden City, Weber County, UDOT or UTA requires a written notice within one year. Details are on our deadlines page.
Ogden Routes Where Riders Get Hurt
Washington Boulevard (US-89), the main street, where riders share lanes with buses, parked cars and turning traffic. Harrison Boulevard, the approach to Weber State, with OGX buses and drivers turning into campus lots. 12th Street into Ogden Canyon (SR-39), where the shoulder disappears past the canyon mouth and weekend traffic heads for Pineview. Trappers Loop Road (SR-167), linking I-84 west of Mountain Green with the Ogden Valley on curving road. Ogden River Parkway crossings, where the paved trail meets streets.
On the parkway and other paths, and in crosswalks, a cyclist yields to pedestrians, signals before passing them and otherwise has a pedestrian's rights and duties, and negligent collisions with walkers or other riders are prohibited (§ 41-6a-1106). Crashes in the city go to Ogden Police, on campus to Weber State University Police, and up the canyon in unincorporated county to the Weber County Sheriff's Office.
What Causes Ogden Bike Crashes
Drivers turning left across a rider on Washington or Harrison, right turns into driveways and lots, doors opened into a rider beside parked cars (§ 41-6a-1704 forbids opening one unless it is safe), close passes and center-line drift on SR-39, and drivers pulling out of Weber State lots without checking the bike lane or shoulder. See our dooring guide for door-zone crashes.
Common Injuries
Shoulder and collarbone fractures, broken wrists and hips, brain injuries from striking the pavement, spinal damage, facial injuries and road rash. A bone fracture is one of the listed injuries that let a person who has or must have PIP claim general damages from the at-fault driver (§ 31A-22-309). McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden is a Level II trauma center with a 24-hour emergency department.
Recoverable Damages
- Economic losses: hospital, surgery and therapy bills, lost pay, reduced earning capacity, and the bike and equipment.
- Quality-of-life losses: pain, anxiety on the road and the canyon rides you can no longer do.
- Permanent injury costs: long-term care, equipment and treatment when recovery stops short.
What Adjusters Say in Ogden Bike Claims
That the rider was two abreast, drifted into the lane on a canyon curve, or came off the parkway without looking, usually followed by an early low offer. Scene photos, the damage to the bike, ride-tracking data, business and dashcam video along Washington Boulevard, and witnesses answer those points. If you were in a car, read our Ogden car accident page.

Ogden Cyclist FAQs
A driver squeezed me off the shoulder in Ogden Canyon. Do I have a case without contact?
Possibly. Utah Code § 41-6a-706.5 bars forcing or attempting to force a cyclist off the roadway and passing within three feet, so a no-contact crash can still support a claim. Witnesses, dashcam or helmet-camera video and the driver's identity become the key evidence.
I was riding a GREENbike downtown when a car hit me. Does that change anything?
The driver's duties are the same whether you own the bike or borrowed it. Your claim is against the driver who caused the crash, and your own PIP or uninsured motorist coverage may also help depending on your policy.
Do I still have a claim if I was not wearing a helmet?
Yes. Utah's helmet requirement reaches riders under 21 on e-bikes, scooters and similar devices, not pedal bicycles, and the statute keeps a missing helmet out of the fault analysis in a civil case.
The crash was up the canyon outside city limits. Who handles it?
In unincorporated Weber County, including much of Ogden Canyon, the Weber County Sheriff's Office usually responds; the Utah Highway Patrol covers I-15 and I-84. If a road defect contributed, a notice of claim is due within one year.
What will it cost to work with you?
The consultation is free. You pay nothing up front, and no attorney fees unless we win.
When is the deadline to file?
Usually four years for an injury lawsuit and two for wrongful death, with a one-year notice of claim for any government entity, such as Ogden City, Weber County, UTA or UDOT.
