Clinton's Crash Corridors

Clinton is a mostly residential city in north Davis County, and two state highways cross in the middle of it. SR-37 runs west on 1800 North from SR-126 in Sunset, through Clinton and West Point, toward Hooper. SR-108 follows 2000 West north from Syracuse, through Clinton and into Roy in Weber County. Nearly every errand, school run and commute in town touches one of them.

1800 North (SR-37)

The city's east-west spine connects west-side neighborhoods with Sunset and the road to the freeway. Queues at signals, turns into shopping centers and churches, and drivers merging from side streets make rear-end and left-turn impacts the most frequent claims.

2000 West (SR-108)

The north-south state route between Syracuse and Roy. Residential streets and driveways open straight onto it, so a car pulling out, or one stopped to turn left into a subdivision, is a common setup for a broadside or rear-end hit.

Where SR-37 meets SR-108

The crossing of the two state routes carries heavy turning volume at rush hour. When both drivers insist the light was theirs, signal timing records and video from nearby businesses are what break the tie, and both have to be requested quickly.

West toward West Point and Hooper

Beyond the western edge of town, SR-37 keeps going through newer subdivisions and more open ground before turning north into Weber County. Speeds climb as the houses thin out, and new side streets keep adding turning traffic.

Reaching I-15 and the West Davis Corridor

Commuters head east toward I-15 or west to the West Davis Corridor (SR-177), which the state highway code runs from Farmington to SR-193 in West Point. Crashes on either freeway happen at high speed and are investigated by the Highway Patrol rather than city officers.

Who investigates in Clinton

The Clinton Police Department, at 2209 North 1500 West, takes crash reports on city streets, and the Utah Highway Patrol covers the freeways. If a Clinton City vehicle, a Davis County road problem or a UDOT project played a part, a written notice of claim is due within one year under § 63G-7-402.

Your Own Policy Pays First

Utah's no-fault rule sends your first medical bills to your own insurer, whoever caused the collision. Personal injury protection must cover at least $3,000 of reasonable medical expenses, plus the lesser of $250 a week or 85% of lost gross income for up to 52 consecutive weeks (§ 31A-22-307). More in our no-fault overview.

An ambulance run and an emergency workup in Ogden or Layton can use that up in a day. Seeking pain, suffering and other general damages from the careless driver requires at least one of these under § 31A-22-309(1):

  • Medical costs above $3,000
  • Any broken bone
  • Impairment or disability that is permanent and backed by objective findings
  • Scarring or disfigurement that will not fade
  • Loss of a limb or other body part
  • A death caused by the crash

Clear that bar and you can pursue the full claim against the responsible driver's liability coverage. If those limits run out, underinsured motorist coverage on your own policy may fill the gap; see how UIM works.

Splitting Fault in a Clinton Case

Section 78B-5-818 lets you collect only from defendants whose combined fault exceeds yours, and whatever you recover shrinks by your own percentage.

Here the arguments usually turn on a left turn across 1800 North, a driver easing onto 2000 West from a side street, or who had the green where the two highways cross. Scene photos, the report number and a witness who watched the light are worth gathering before memories blur.

Filing deadlines

Most injury lawsuits must be filed within four years (§ 78B-2-307); wrongful death claims have two, and notice to Clinton City, Davis County or UDOT is due within one. Details are in our Utah filing deadline guide.

Clinton Crash Claims

Left-turn and side-street collisions

On 1800 North and 2000 West, where drivers cut across oncoming traffic into neighborhoods, schools and shopping lots.

Signal disputes

At the SR-37 and SR-108 crossing and the other lights in town, where each driver claims the right of way. Signal logs and camera footage settle these when someone asks for them early.

Commuter freeway crashes

On I-15 or the West Davis Corridor on the way to work, where a sudden slowdown at freeway speed can involve several vehicles at once.

Pedestrians and cyclists

Kids and adults crossing or riding along busy state routes near schools and parks. The crossing location and what the driver could see decide fault; see our Utah pedestrian guide.

Uninsured and hit-and-run drivers

Utah treats an unidentified vehicle that flees the scene as uninsured (§ 31A-22-305), so your UM coverage may answer. If that car never touched you, the statute demands clear and convincing evidence beyond your own word, which makes an independent witness valuable.

After a Clinton Collision

  • Call 911 and ask whether Clinton Police or the Highway Patrol is writing the report; note the case number.
  • Get examined the same day. McKay-Dee Hospital and Ogden Regional Medical Center in Ogden are Level II trauma centers; Holy Cross Hospital – Davis in Layton is Level III.
  • Photograph the vehicles where they came to rest, the signal heads, tire marks and scattered debris.
  • Collect phone numbers from anyone who saw it; neighbors and other commuters often noticed more than the drivers did.
  • Tell your own insurer about the crash so PIP starts, and hold off on a recorded statement to the other driver's carrier until your injuries are understood.
