Hurt on I-15, Main Street or in Cedar Canyon? Free consultation, and no attorney fees unless we win.

Cedar City's Roads and Their Risks

Cedar City handles three kinds of traffic at once: long-haul and freight traffic on I-15, the Main Street and university grid, and SR-14 climbing east into Cedar Canyon toward Duck Creek.

I-15 and its three exits

Exits 57, 59 and 62 feed the city: 57 and 62 connect to Main Street (SR-130, the I-15 business loop), and 59 to 200 North (SR-56). Tired long-distance drivers and heavy trucks at speed make crashes here severe.

Main Street (SR-130) and downtown

The five-lane boulevard follows old US-91 and meets Center Street (SR-14) downtown, with parking, turning traffic and people walking between SUU, shops and the theaters. Angle and turning crashes often come down to the signal.

SR-14 and Cedar Canyon

A steep, curving climb with limited shoulder. It is plowed year-round, but rockslides have closed it, including a slide UDOT crews cleared with explosives, and winter storms bring traction requirements. Speed for the conditions is the usual fight.

The SUU area

Students walking, biking and riding scooters, concentrated between classes and during the summer Utah Shakespeare Festival crowds on campus.

SR-56 west past the airport

200 North becomes SR-56 past Cedar City Regional Airport and heads toward Newcastle, with open-road speeds, farm equipment and wildlife. Closing speed and visibility decide these.

Responding Agencies and Deadlines

Cedar City Police handle city streets, the Iron County Sheriff unincorporated areas, and the Highway Patrol I-15 and the state routes. If UDOT, Iron County or the city is part of the claim, the notice deadline is one year.

Paying for Treatment

Under Utah's no-fault rules your own PIP pays first: $3,000 or more for medical care, and 85% of gross lost income up to $250 a week, for no more than 52 weeks. Utah PIP guide.

Stepping outside no-fault to claim pain and suffering requires one of these:

  • Medical expenses of more than $3,000
  • Any broken bone
  • Permanent disability or impairment based on objective findings
  • Lasting disfigurement
  • Loss of a body part (dismemberment)
  • Death

Then the at-fault driver's insurer answers for the full claim, and underinsured motorist coverage on your own policy adds to it if that driver's limits are low. UIM stacking.

Comparative Fault

Utah Code § 78B-5-818: your share of fault reduces your recovery, and you recover nothing unless the other side's combined fault is greater than yours.

On I-15 expect questions about lane position around trucks; in the canyon, your speed for snow or rock on the road; near SUU, where the scooter rider was. Photos, truck and dash video, and witnesses matter most.

Deadlines

Four years for most injuries; two years for wrongful death; one year to notify UDOT, Iron County or Cedar City. Deadline details.

Cases We Handle in Iron County

Interstate and truck crashes

I-15 past exits 57 through 62, including collisions with commercial trucks. Why truck evidence disappears fast.

Downtown collisions

Main Street and Center Street turns and parking maneuvers, busier during festival season.

Campus-area crashes

Pedestrians, cyclists and scooter riders around SUU.

Uninsured and hit-and-run claims

Uninsured, or fled the scene? Your UM coverage may pay, and if the vehicle never touched you, Utah requires clear and convincing proof beyond your own testimony that it existed. Hit-and-run guide.

After a Cedar City Crash

  • Call 911 and note the case number and agency: city police, the sheriff or the Highway Patrol.
  • Be seen that day at Intermountain Cedar City Hospital, a Level IV trauma center; serious injuries may be transferred to St. George Regional Hospital, a Level II center.
  • Photograph the road, weather, vehicles and any rock or debris.
  • Ask witnesses, including truck drivers, for names and numbers.
  • Open your PIP claim and delay any recorded statement to the other insurer. What comes next.
