Where Clearfield Crashes Happen

Clearfield sits between I-15 and the west side of Hill Air Force Base, with the Freeport Center industrial district on its southwest side. Main Street (SR-126) runs through town, SR-193 passes the base’s south entrance on its way from the West Davis Corridor to US-89, and 650 North (SR-103) links Main Street to I-15 and the Falcon Hill research park just outside the base fence. A FrontRunner station has served the city since 2008. Every Clearfield street is ranked by its crash record on our Clearfield’s most dangerous roads page. Our Clearfield personal injury page covers injuries beyond car crashes, from falls to dog bites.

Main Street (SR-126)

Older commercial frontage, frequent driveways and closely spaced cross streets make Main Street a turning-conflict road. Angle and rear-end impacts dominate the claims that come off it.

SR-193 and the south gate

A four-lane highway through Clearfield and past Hill’s south entrance. Commuter peaks and turns into the base and nearby businesses create rear-end chains and left-turn crashes.

650 North (SR-103) and I-15

A short, busy connector between Main Street, the freeway ramps and Falcon Hill. Ramp traffic and signals in close succession lead to merge and rear-end collisions.

Freeport Center truck traffic

The Freeport Center houses manufacturing, warehousing and distribution companies, which put semi-trucks on Clearfield streets throughout the day. Wide turns, blind spots and backing maneuvers produce truck-versus-car crashes.

I-15 through north Davis County

Commuters bound for Ogden and Salt Lake share the interstate with freight. Sudden slowdowns near the Clearfield interchanges cause multi-car collisions, which the Highway Patrol investigates.

Agencies that respond in Clearfield

Clearfield Police investigate crashes inside city limits, the Utah Highway Patrol handles I-15, and federal law enforcement handles incidents on Hill Air Force Base. A crash on the base, or with an on-duty federal employee, may be governed by the Federal Tort Claims Act; a claim against UDOT, UTA, Davis County or Clearfield City requires a notice of claim within one year (§ 63G-7-402).

Paying Medical Bills Through PIP

In Utah, personal injury protection from your own insurer pays first regardless of fault: medical care up to at least $3,000 and 85% of gross wages lost, to a limit of $250 per week, for up to 52 weeks (§ 31A-22-307). Learn more in Is Utah a No-Fault State?

A trip to Holy Cross Hospital – Davis or Layton Hospital, both Level III trauma centers in neighboring Layton, can consume most of that. Stepping outside no-fault to claim general damages from the responsible driver takes one of these (§ 31A-22-309(1)):

  • Medical bills in excess of $3,000
  • A fracture of any bone
  • Permanent disability or impairment established by objective findings
  • Disfigurement that will not go away
  • Losing a limb or other body part
  • Death

After that line is crossed, the negligent driver’s insurer owes compensation for the full loss, and your own underinsured coverage can supplement a low policy limit. Utah UIM explained.

Fault Allocation in Davis County

Section 78B-5-818 reduces your recovery by your share of fault and bars it unless the defendants’ combined fault is greater than yours.

Clearfield disputes usually involve a turn into a business on Main Street, spacing in the gate traffic on SR-193, or a semi’s wide turn out of the Freeport Center. Business and dashcam video and prompt witness statements carry real weight.

Deadlines to know

Most injury claims: four years (§ 78B-2-307). Wrongful death: two years. Government entities: notice within one year. Federal claims follow their own rules. Details are on our deadlines page.
