Cedar City Rideshare Accident Lawyer
Hurt in an Uber or Lyft in Cedar City? The coverage available depends on the driver's app status at the moment of the crash, and our legal team works to prove it. Free consultation, no attorney fees unless we win. Hablamos Español.
Rideshare demand in Cedar City follows the calendar. Southern Utah University students need rides between campus, apartments and Main Street; summer brings Utah Shakespeare Festival audiences to campus, many of them visitors without a car; and travelers need a lift to or from Cedar City Regional Airport off 200 North. Those trips use Main Street, which follows old US-91, Center Street, 200 North and the I-15 interchanges at exits 57, 59 and 62. After a crash on any of them, the claim begins by fixing what the driver's app showed.
That one fact can move the available coverage from $50,000 per person to $1,000,000 per occurrence. Whether you were the passenger, a driver struck at a Main Street signal, a student crossing near campus, or a local driving for Uber or Lyft between classes or shifts, we find out which coverage was in force and build the claim on it.
Pinning Down the Coverage Period in Cedar City
Insurance minimums under Utah Code § 13-51-108 depend on the driver's app status:
- App closed. No rideshare coverage applies, and the driver's personal auto policy is the one to claim against. Personal insurers in Utah may exclude rideshare driving (§ 13-51-108(11)), which makes proof of the driver's actual status important when a driver says the app was off.
- App open, waiting for a request. During this waiting period, the law requires liability limits of at least $50,000 per person, $100,000 per crash, and $30,000 for property.
- Request accepted until the rider steps out. Utah treats that stretch as a prearranged ride (§ 13-51-102) and requires at least $1,000,000 per occurrence in liability coverage, together with PIP and uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage where the Insurance Code requires them.
A driver who accepts a ride near an I-15 exit or on 200 North by the airport may already be moving toward the pickup, so the timing of the tap matters. We seek the acceptance record, trip details and location data from the company instead of relying on a claims adjuster's account. Our Utah rideshare insurance guide lays out the periods.
Who Can File a Cedar City Rideshare Claim
These are the people most often hurt in a Cedar City rideshare crash:
- Passengers, including SUU students, festival visitors and travelers heading to the airport.
- Drivers and occupants of other vehicles hit by an Uber or Lyft on Main Street, Center Street or I-15.
- Pedestrians, cyclists and scooter riders around campus struck by a rideshare car.
- Rideshare drivers hurt by another motorist while signed in.
Each of these can draw on different coverage, sometimes several at once. For crashes that did not involve a rideshare car, see our Cedar City car accident lawyer page.
Utah Law Behind a Cedar City Rideshare Claim
PIP on the applicable policy pays early medical costs and part of lost income regardless of who caused the crash (§ 31A-22-307; how Utah no-fault works). Recovery under § 78B-5-818 requires that the fault of the people you sue be greater than yours. Most injury suits must be filed within four years, but a claim against UDOT, Iron County or Cedar City requires a notice of claim within one year (§ 63G-7-402); our deadline guide has the details.
Local Factors in a Cedar City Rideshare Case
Cedar City Police respond inside city limits, the Iron County Sheriff's Office covers unincorporated areas, and the Utah Highway Patrol handles I-15 and the state routes, so the report may sit with any of the three. Intermountain Cedar City Hospital is a Level IV trauma center, and serious injuries may be transferred to St. George Regional Hospital, a Level II center. Lawsuits from Iron County go to the Fifth District Court at 40 North 100 East in Cedar City. Our Cedar City personal injury page covers other kinds of injury claims.
What a Cedar City Rideshare Claim Can Recover
- Economic losses: emergency care, transfer and hospital costs, therapy, future medical needs, missed work and reduced earning capacity, including for students whose studies are delayed.
- Non-economic losses: pain, emotional strain, and the loss of ordinary activities while you recover.
- Lasting care: surgery, rehabilitation and support at home for injuries that do not resolve. See our article on Uber passenger settlement amounts for what drives a claim's value.
- Fatal crashes: wrongful death claims for families who lose a loved one.

Cedar City Uber and Lyft Crash Questions
I'm an SUU student and my Uber crashed on the way back to my apartment. Who covers my injuries?
Because you were on an accepted trip, Utah requires at least $1,000,000 per occurrence in liability coverage for the rideshare driver, plus uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. If another driver caused the crash, that driver's policy is also a source.
I'm visiting for the festival and was hurt in a Lyft. Can I handle the claim after I go home?
Yes. A crash in Utah is generally decided under Utah law, and much of the work can be done by phone and mail. Get the police case number and photos before you leave town, and see a doctor promptly wherever you are.
Does the driver's personal insurance ever pay instead of Uber or Lyft's?
Yes, when the driver was logged out. If the driver was online, the rideshare coverage for that period applies, and Utah bars those policies from requiring the personal insurer to deny the claim first.
What does a Cedar City rideshare accident lawyer cost?
Your first consultation is free and fees are contingent on results. You pay nothing up front, and no attorney fees unless we win.
What deadlines apply to a Cedar City rideshare claim?
Four years for most injury lawsuits, two years for wrongful death, and one year to file a notice of claim if UDOT, Iron County or Cedar City is involved.
What should I do right after a rideshare crash in Cedar City?
Get medical care, screenshot the ride in the app, write down the driver's name and plate, photograph the vehicles and the street, and ask which agency is writing the report.
