Beaver's Crash Corridors

Beaver sits against I-15 about halfway between Salt Lake City and St. George. Exits 109 and 112 feed interstate travelers into town, SR-160 serves as Main Street, SR-153 heads east up Beaver Canyon, and SR-21 runs west through the Beaver River valley toward Milford and the Nevada line. Most serious injuries here involve a fast road and a driver far from home.

I-15 at Exits 109 and 112

Travelers leave the freeway for fuel and food after hours at the wheel. Off-ramps that drop highway speed onto local streets, tractor-trailers turning into fuel stops and tired drivers misjudging distance lead to rear-end and turning collisions.

Main Street (SR-160)

The town's through street mixes local errands, ranch pickups and freeway drivers who have not yet slowed down. Angle crashes at the cross streets and pedestrians crossing between blocks are the common problems.

SR-153 up Beaver Canyon

Starting as 200 North, the highway enters the canyon a few miles east of town and climbs past Eagle Point Ski Resort into the Tushar Mountains, topping out around 9,200 feet. Snow, curves and drivers new to mountain roads meet on two lanes.

SR-21 toward Milford

Long, straight two-lane miles where passing decisions and fatigue matter, and where farm equipment and slow trucks enter from field accesses into fast traffic.

Deer and open range

Animals on the road at dawn and dusk. A swerve that ends in a rollover can still trace back to another driver's speed, a gap in fencing or a missing warning sign.

Who takes the report near Beaver

The Utah Highway Patrol investigates crashes on I-15 and the state routes, and Beaver County Sheriff's Office deputies cover county roads, with the sheriff's records office at 2270 South Sheriff Dale E. Nelson Drive. Ask the officer which agency is writing the report so you request it from the right place. A road defect, a work zone or a public vehicle brings a one-year notice of claim under Utah Code § 63G-7-402.

PIP Pays First, Even on the Interstate

Whatever the fault, your personal injury protection starts paying: a minimum of $3,000 in medical expenses and 85% of lost gross income capped at $250 a week, for as long as 52 weeks (Utah Code § 31A-22-307). Our no-fault explainer covers the details.

Beaver Valley Hospital serves the town, but it is not on the state's list of designated trauma centers. The nearest listed centers along I-15 are Level IV hospitals in Cedar City and Fillmore, with Level II care at St. George Regional, so transport alone can use up PIP. Suing the at-fault driver for general damages requires one of the following under Utah Code § 31A-22-309:

  • Medical costs above $3,000
  • A fractured bone
  • Objectively documented permanent disability
  • Permanent scarring or disfigurement
  • Loss of a limb or body part
  • A fatality

Meet one and the responsible driver's liability carrier owes the full claim. Interstate travelers often carry another state's minimum limits, and your own underinsured motorist policy may cover the gap.

Fault on a Rural Interstate

Under Utah Code § 78B-5-818 your damages shrink by your own share of fault, and you collect nothing unless the defendants together were more at fault than you.

Beaver cases usually turn on speed and attention: whether you slowed for snow in the canyon, whether a semi changed lanes without room, whether a vehicle leaving a field access yielded as Utah Code § 41-6a-903(1)(b) requires. Trucks carry electronic logging and engine data that should be preserved by letter quickly; our truck crash guide explains why.

Filing windows

Four years for most injury suits, two for wrongful death, and one year to serve a notice of claim on Beaver City, Beaver County or UDOT. Details are in the Utah deadline guide.

Beaver Crash Cases

Semi-truck collisions on I-15

Rear-end, sideswipe and jackknife crashes with commercial trucks, where the carrier, the driver and sometimes a broker or maintenance shop each carry separate coverage.

Exit and fuel-stop crashes

Collisions at the two interchanges and the businesses around them, where freeway speed meets turning trucks and parking-lot traffic.

Canyon and ski-season crashes

SR-153 in snow, with Eagle Point traffic, trailers and drivers who misjudge a curve or cross the center line on ice.

Wildlife swerve crashes

If another car's evasive move pushed it into you, that driver is still judged on speed and lookout. An animal strike with no other vehicle usually runs through your own coverage.

Out-of-state and uninsured drivers

Long-distance travelers bring policies from Nevada, California and beyond, and some carry none. Your uninsured motorist coverage can step in, and a hit-and-run should be reported immediately.

After a Crash Near Beaver

  • Call 911 and give your exit number or mile marker so help finds you; before leaving, get the case number and the agency's name.
  • See a doctor that day, even if you feel fine. Ask Beaver Valley Hospital or the receiving facility to record every symptom, including the minor ones.
  • Photograph the vehicles, the road surface, the weather and any skid marks while they are still there.
  • Get witness contacts on the spot; freeway travelers will be hundreds of miles away by night.
  • Open your PIP claim with your own company and decline a recorded statement to the other insurer until your injuries are understood.
