Vernal Traffic: Highways, Trucks and Distance

Vernal is the hub of the Uintah Basin, and its crashes reflect that. US-40 is the east-west spine, running through Vernal to Jensen and the Colorado line; US-191 heads north from Vernal toward Dutch John and Wyoming. Energy-industry trucks, ranch traffic and summer visitors bound for Dinosaur National Monument share the same two highways.

US-40 through Vernal

The highway is the town's main commercial corridor. Heavy trucks, shoppers turning into businesses and drivers entering from side streets make rear-end and left-turn collisions common.

US-191 north

Leaving Vernal, US-191 climbs north past Steinaker State Park (reached by SR-301) toward Flaming Gorge and Dutch John. Grades, curves, deer and winter ice lead to run-off-road and head-on crashes.

SR-45 and SR-88 energy routes

SR-45 leaves US-40 in Naples and runs south through Bonanza, and SR-88 runs from US-40 near Fort Duchesne south to Ouray and the Green River. Both lead into the basin's oil and gas country, where tankers and service trucks share two-lane pavement with pickups.

SR-121, the Lapoint road

SR-121 runs between Roosevelt and Vernal through Neola and Lapoint as an alternative to US-40. Rural intersections, farm equipment and commuters traveling at highway speed on a two-lane road are the recurring risks.

Jensen and SR-149

SR-149 runs north from US-40 at Jensen to the Dinosaur National Monument boundary. Summer visitors in RVs and with trailers join the local truck traffic.

Law enforcement in the Vernal area

Vernal City Police respond inside the city, the Uintah County Sheriff's Office covers the unincorporated basin, and the Utah Highway Patrol handles the U.S. and state highways. A crash tied to a government vehicle or a road hazard requires a notice of claim within one year.

Your PIP Benefits Come First

Before fault is resolved, your own auto insurance pays: a minimum of $3,000 in medical bills and 85% of lost gross wages up to $250 a week, for up to 52 weeks (Utah Code § 31A-22-307). Learn how Utah's no-fault law works.

A rural crash often includes a long ambulance ride or helicopter flight, which can use up those benefits at once. Section 31A-22-309 allows a general-damages claim against the driver at fault only with:

  • Medical charges greater than $3,000
  • A fracture of any bone
  • A permanent disability or impairment based on objective findings
  • Permanent disfigurement from the crash
  • Dismemberment
  • Death

Meet one, and the at-fault driver's insurer must cover the whole claim. In a truck crash, the carrier's commercial policy may apply; if coverage is short, your underinsured motorist policy adds to it.

Dividing Fault in Uintah County

Section 78B-5-818 reduces your recovery by your fault percentage and ends it if you are 50% or more at fault.

Insurers in basin crashes argue about following distance behind a truck, passing on a two-lane highway, speed on icy pavement, and whether a driver saw a vehicle entering from a lease road. Truck electronic logging data, dispatch records and photos of the road surface make the difference, and carriers keep some records only briefly.

How long you have

Most crash injury claims have a four-year filing limit and wrongful death two years. Claims against Vernal City, Uintah County or UDOT require notice within one year. Our statute of limitations guide covers the details.

Vernal-Area Crashes We Handle

Oil-field truck collisions

Tankers, water haulers and service rigs working the basin's oil and gas fields. These crashes involve a motor carrier's federal records and a commercial policy; see our truck accident guide.

Main Street crashes on US-40

Turning, rear-end and pedestrian collisions along the commercial corridor through Vernal.

Two-lane highway crashes

Head-on, passing and run-off-road collisions on US-191, SR-121 and the routes to Jensen and Bonanza.

Wildlife and winter crashes

Deer strikes and ice-related loss of control. When another driver's speed or following distance contributed, a claim against that driver may still exist.

Uninsured or hit-and-run drivers

Your UM policy usually applies. If you were forced off the road by a vehicle that never touched you, you need clear and convincing evidence beyond your own testimony that it existed (§ 31A-22-305(6)). See our hit-and-run guide.

Steps After a Vernal Crash

  • Call 911, identify the responding agency (Vernal Police, the sheriff or UHP), and get the case number.
  • Get evaluated the same day. Ashley Regional Medical Center in Vernal is a state-designated Level IV trauma center, and the most serious injuries may be sent on to a higher-level center.
  • Photograph vehicles, truck company markings, DOT numbers, skid marks and road conditions.
  • Get names and numbers of witnesses and other drivers who stopped.
  • Open your PIP claim, and do not give a recorded statement to a trucking company or its insurer before you understand your injuries.

Injury lawsuits from Vernal are filed in the Eighth District Court, which serves Uintah County. Many resolve without trial, but truck evidence has to be preserved early. Call (801) 921-5134.
