Hit while riding in Daybreak, at a Bangerter crossing or near the Jordan River? Free consultation, and no attorney fees unless we win. Hablamos Español.
South Jordan has cyclists of every age on the move. Daybreak's streets and paths circle Oquirrh Lake and lead to the Red Line stations on South Grandville Avenue; the Jordan River Parkway passes East River Front Park on the city's east side; and Bingham Creek Regional Park draws riders to its bike park and the RAD Canyon BMX track. In between sit 10400 South, 11400 South, Redwood Road and the Bangerter interchanges, where fast traffic and bikes cross paths.
Many riders here are kids and teens, and a growing share are on e-bikes. When a driver hits one of them, the insurance company's questions start with the rider. Utah law sets out duties for both sides, and most of the ones that matter in a crash fall on the person driving the car. For other injuries in the city, see our South Jordan personal injury page.
What Utah Law Expects From Drivers Near Bikes
Give three feet. A motorist who knowingly, intentionally or recklessly drives within three feet of a bicyclist, or tries to force one off the road, violates Utah Code § 41-6a-706.5, and causing injury makes it a class C misdemeanor. Treat the bike as traffic. Section 41-6a-1102 gives bicycle riders the rights of other vehicle operators, so a driver turning left must yield to an oncoming cyclist close enough to be a hazard, exactly as for a car (§ 41-6a-903).
Riding right, with exceptions. Section 41-6a-1105 lets a rider leave the right edge to pass, turn left, avoid a conflicting right-turn-only lane, or get around hazards and lanes too narrow to share, conditions riders meet on several approaches to the Bangerter underpasses. The same section lets a cyclist treat a stop sign as a yield after slowing, unless the intersection has an active railroad grade crossing. Our bicycle claims guide covers the rest.
Who Pays After a South Jordan Bike Crash
Coverage usually comes from these sources:
- The driver's liability policy, for medical bills, lost income and pain caused by that driver's carelessness.
- Your family's own auto policy, whose PIP may cover early medical bills and some lost wages for a rider depending on its terms, and whose uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage can fill gaps after a hit-and-run or a thinly insured driver.
Utah's minimum liability limit is $30,000 per injured person for policies issued or renewed since January 1, 2025 (§ 31A-22-304), which does not stretch far after surgery. South Jordan Police warn on their e-bike safety page that insurance may not cover a crash when a child was riding an illegal e-motorcycle, so what the rider was on can matter too.
Shared Fault, Helmets and Deadlines
Under § 78B-5-818, your award drops by your share of fault and disappears if that share reaches 50%. Utah requires helmets for riders under 21 on e-bikes (§ 41-6a-1505), not on pedal bicycles, and the same statute keeps a missing helmet out of evidence on negligence and damages. You generally have four years to sue a driver, but only one year to file a notice of claim against UTA, UDOT or South Jordan City. The deadlines page has details.
South Jordan Roads, Paths and Crossings
Daybreak and the Red Line. Paths around Oquirrh Lake feed into neighborhood streets and the South Jordan Parkway (10605 South) and Daybreak Parkway (11405 South) stations, where drivers watching for trains and parking can miss a bike. 10400 and 11400 South. Wide arterials with retail driveways, now carrying interchange traffic from the Bangerter underpasses at 9800, 10400 and 11400 South. Redwood Road. A state route through the older part of town where turning drivers misjudge a rider's speed. The Mountain View Corridor. Signalized crossings on a road built for near-freeway speed.
On paths and trails, a cyclist must yield to pedestrians and give an audible warning before passing, has a pedestrian's rights and duties in a crosswalk, and may not ride negligently into a walker or another cyclist (§ 41-6a-1106). South Jordan Police say they are seeing more unsafe e-bike riding on sidewalks, roads and trails; when another rider causes the crash, that rider, or a parent's homeowner's policy, may be the source of payment.
Common South Jordan Crash Patterns
A driver turning right into a shopping center across a rider in the bike lane, a left turn on 11400 South in front of an oncoming cyclist, drivers backing out of Daybreak driveways, a door opened into a rider beside parked cars, a merge at a Bangerter ramp with no look for a bike, and drivers distracted near schools during pickup.
Injuries We See in Cyclists
Head injuries, broken collarbones, wrists, elbows and hips, spinal injuries, dental and facial injuries, and road rash that can need skin grafts. Intermountain Riverton Hospital, a Level IV trauma center, is nearby to evaluate and stabilize; the most serious injuries go to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, a Level I center, and children to Primary Children's, also Level I. For a rider who has PIP, a bone fracture is one of the listed thresholds that opens a pain-and-suffering claim under § 31A-22-309.
Damages in a Bicycle Claim
- Economic damages: ambulance, surgery and therapy bills, missed work, reduced earning ability, and the bike and gear.
- Non-economic damages: pain, sleep and mood problems after a crash, and the loss of rides, sports and time with family.
- Future needs: care, therapy or home changes for injuries that leave a permanent mark.
What Adjusters Tend to Argue
That the rider swerved, rode against traffic, was on the sidewalk, or was a minor on an e-bike that should not have been there. Those points can shift some fault, but they rarely excuse a driver who was not looking. Doorbell cameras, station and business video, bike or phone ride data, and early witness statements carry the most weight. If you were in a car, see our South Jordan car accident page.

South Jordan Cyclist FAQs
My teenager was hit on an e-bike in Daybreak. Can we still bring a claim?
Yes, if a driver's carelessness caused the crash. The type of e-bike and the rider's age may come up, but Utah's helmet statute keeps a missing helmet out of evidence on negligence, and fault is compared rather than all-or-nothing.
A driver turning into a shopping center on 10400 South cut me off. Is that on the driver?
Often. A cyclist counts as traffic under Utah Code § 41-6a-1102, and a driver has to turn safely around a rider already in the lane. Any share of fault assigned to you reduces the award, and bars it only at 50% or more.
Does the South Jordan Justice Court handle my case?
No. That court closed permanently on July 1, 2026, and South Jordan cases now go to the Salt Lake County Justice Court at 2001 South State Street. A traffic ticket is separate from your injury claim, which is civil and would be filed in Third District Court if it does not settle.
Will my own car insurance help after a bike crash?
It may. Depending on who your policy covers, PIP can pay early medical bills and part of lost wages, and uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage can apply after a hit-and-run or when the driver's limits run out.
What will hiring you cost?
The consultation is free. You pay nothing up front, and no attorney fees unless we win.
How long do we have to act?
Generally four years against a driver, two years for wrongful death, and one year for a notice of claim if UTA, UDOT or the city is involved.
