West Jordan Bicycle Accident Lawyer

Struck while riding in West Jordan, on Redwood Road, near a Bangerter interchange or along the Jordan River Trail? Free consultation, and no attorney fees unless we win. Hablamos Español.

West Jordan’s cyclists fall into two groups that end up facing the same traffic. Commuters and kids ride neighborhood collectors to schools, parks and Red Line stations, while recreational riders head for the Jordan River Trail along the city’s east edge. Getting from one to the other usually means crossing a wide arterial such as Redwood Road, 7000 South, 9000 South or Bangerter Highway, where UDOT’s interchange rebuilds let traffic carry freeway speed toward the remaining signals.

After a crash, the driver’s insurer tends to tell a familiar story: the cyclist darted across, rode on the wrong side, or had no business on a road that busy. Utah law gives a person on a bicycle the same rights on the road as any other vehicle operator (§ 41-6a-1102). Our Draper office is a short drive south on Bangerter, and the West Jordan personal injury page covers the city’s other injury claims.

Utah Traffic Rules for West Jordan Riders

Passing distance. Section 41-6a-706.5 lists bicyclists and e-bike riders among a highway’s vulnerable users and makes it an offense for a driver to knowingly, intentionally or recklessly pass within three feet of one, or to try to force one off the road. A violation that injures the rider is a class C misdemeanor. On a collector lined with parked cars, obeying that rule often means the driver has to wait.

Lane position. A rider slower than traffic keeps near the right edge, but § 41-6a-1105 lists exceptions: passing, preparing for a left turn, going straight where a right-turn-only lane would conflict, and avoiding parked cars, debris or a lane too narrow to share. The right-turn-lane exception matters at West Jordan’s big intersections, where a cyclist continuing straight has to leave the curb to avoid being cut off.

Insurance That Can Pay a Cyclist’s Claim

A West Jordan bike crash involving a car can open several coverages:

  • Bodily injury liability on the driver’s policy, which answers for the harm the driver caused once fault is shown.
  • Your household’s auto policies. Under § 31A-22-308, the named insured and relatives living in the same household can receive PIP benefits when hurt in an accident involving any motor vehicle, which can include a bike crash. Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage may step in when the driver fled or carried too little. See how Utah no-fault works.

Utah’s required bodily injury limit is only $30,000 per person for policies issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2025 (§ 31A-22-304), and a hospital stay after a bike crash can pass that quickly. Our Utah bicycle claims guide explains how the coverages stack.

Shared Fault, Helmets and Filing Deadlines

Under § 78B-5-818 fault is divided by percentage: your award drops by your share, and you recover nothing unless the defendants’ combined fault exceeds yours. The helmet statute, § 41-6a-1505, applies to riders under 21 on e-bikes rather than pedal bikes, and it keeps a missing helmet out of the negligence and damages questions. Most injury suits have a four-year limit, but a claim against West Jordan City, Salt Lake County, UDOT or UTA needs a notice of claim within one year; the deadline guide has details.

Where West Jordan Bike Crashes Happen

Redwood Road is wide and fast, lined with driveways, bus stops and apartment entrances where drivers turn across a rider’s path. Bangerter Highway crossings at 7000 South and 9000 South are now freeway-style interchanges, and ramp traffic reaching the surface streets is still moving quickly. The Jordan Landing area off 7000 South funnels drivers into parking-lot entrances and turn lanes. The Jordan River Trail on the east side offers a car-free route, but every access point puts riders back onto city streets.

Off the road, the rules shift. On a sidewalk, path or trail, or in a crosswalk, a cyclist must yield to pedestrians, must give an audible signal before passing one, and otherwise has a pedestrian’s rights and duties (§ 41-6a-1106). The same section forbids riding negligently into a pedestrian or another rider, which decides trail collisions where no car was involved.

How Drivers Hit Cyclists in West Jordan

Right hooks by drivers turning into Jordan Landing or a Redwood Road business, left turns across an oncoming rider (§ 41-6a-903), drivers rolling out of subdivisions and school lots without looking, too-close passes on narrow collectors, a parked car’s door swung into traffic (§ 41-6a-1704 allows it only when it can be done safely), and drivers backing out of driveways (§ 41-6a-1701). Our dooring guide covers door-zone crashes.

Injuries We See After Bike Crashes

Broken collarbones, wrists and hips, head and brain injuries, spinal damage, facial and dental trauma, and road rash deep enough to need grafts. If you have or must carry PIP, a bone fracture is one of the conditions in § 31A-22-309 that opens a claim for pain and suffering. Holy Cross Hospital – Jordan Valley at 3580 West 9000 South is a state-designated Level III trauma center, and Intermountain Medical Center in Murray is a Level I center.

What a Claim Can Cover

  • Financial losses: hospital and therapy bills, future care, missed paychecks and reduced earning ability, plus the bike, helmet, lights and clothing destroyed in the crash.
  • Human losses: pain, anxiety about riding again, and the time outdoors the injury took away.
  • Lasting effects: ongoing treatment, equipment and help at home for injuries that do not resolve.

What the Insurer Will Argue

Expect claims that you were on the sidewalk, riding against traffic, dressed in dark clothing at night or riding without lights. After dark Utah requires a white front lamp and a red rear reflector or lamp visible from 500 feet (§ 41-6a-1114), so your gear matters. The answers usually come from the West Jordan Police report (the department is at 8040 South Redwood Road), business and traffic cameras, GPS or bike-computer data, and the damage pattern on the bike. If you were driving, see the West Jordan car accident page.

Common Questions

West Jordan Bike Crash FAQs

A driver turning right into a Redwood Road business cut me off. Who is at fault?

Often the driver. Utah gives cyclists the rights of any other vehicle operator (§ 41-6a-1102), and a driver who turns across a rider already beside or just ahead of the car has usually misjudged the turn. Store cameras and the police report help show where each of you was.

Does riding on the Jordan River Trail change my rights?

Somewhat. On a path you must yield to people on foot and signal before passing them, and you otherwise have a pedestrian’s rights and duties. A rider who crashes into you negligently can be responsible, and that rider’s homeowner’s or renter’s insurance may respond.

Will my car insurance cover a crash on my bike?

It can. Utah PIP covers the named insured and household relatives hurt in an accident involving any motor vehicle, and uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage may apply if the driver left or lacked enough insurance.

I wasn’t wearing a helmet. Does that hurt my claim?

Utah’s helmet requirement reaches only riders under 21 on e-bikes, and the statute says failing to wear one is not comparative negligence and may not be used as evidence on negligence, injuries or damages.

What does a bicycle accident lawyer cost?

The consultation is free. You pay nothing up front, and no attorney fees unless we win.

Is there a special deadline if a city vehicle or bad pavement caused my crash?

Yes. A claim against West Jordan City, Salt Lake County, UDOT or UTA needs a written notice of claim within one year. Most other injury suits must be filed within four years, and two years applies to wrongful death.
