West Jordan Dog Bite Lawyer

Bitten by a dog in West Jordan? Utah law holds the owner responsible. Free case review, and no attorney fees unless we win. Hablamos Español.

Most West Jordan dog bites happen in ordinary places: a front porch during a delivery, a subdivision sidewalk where a dog slipped out of an open garage, a neighborhood park, or the Jordan River Trail, where the city asks that dogs stay on a leash. They rarely involve a dog anyone considered dangerous.

West Jordan's own rules point the same way. The city's Animal Services page says dogs must be restrained at all times, meaning under the owner's physical control on a leash or lead, confined in a car, or fenced within the owner's property, and that an e-collar alone does not count. A dog loose on the street is usually out of compliance before it ever bites.

Utah's Dog Owner Liability Rule

Owners and keepers are strictly liable. Utah Code § 18-1-1 makes anyone who owns or keeps a dog liable for injuries it causes, regardless of whether the dog was vicious or the owner knew it. A first bite counts.

Limited exceptions. The statute protects government agencies using certified police dogs within a written policy, and owners whose dog, while reasonably secured by a fence or enclosure on their property, injures an animal that came onto the property without consent or a person trespassing there.

Your share of fault still matters. The statute sends damages through Utah's comparative fault rule, § 78B-5-818, so an insurer may argue provocation or that you entered the yard. Our damages page explains what can be recovered.

More time for children. Limitations periods do not run while the injured person is under 18 (§ 78B-2-108); most adults have four years. Our deadlines page has the specifics.

After a Bite in West Jordan

Clean the wound and have it examined the same day, because bites infect easily; Holy Cross Hospital – Jordan Valley at 3580 West 9000 South has an emergency department. West Jordan says bites to people must be reported to Animal Services, through dispatch at 801-840-4000 or Animal Services at 801-282-3951, which creates an official record and lets the dog's rabies status be checked. Photograph the wounds as they heal and write down the owner's name, address and insurer.

The city's animal shelter is at 5982 West New Bingham Highway. If the dog lived in a rental, the landlord or property manager may also matter, especially where a broken gate or fence let it out.

Our guides on dog bite compensation and settlements go into value, and our West Jordan personal injury page covers other injuries in the city.

Injuries From Dog Attacks

Deep punctures and tears that need stitches or plastic surgery, facial scars, nerve and tendon damage in the hands and forearms, infections, broken bones from being knocked down, and a lasting fear of dogs, especially in children.

What a Claim Can Include

A full claim should account for:

  • Medical care: urgent or emergency treatment, antibiotics, rabies shots if needed, and follow-up visits.
  • Scar treatment: revision surgery or reconstruction, including procedures a child may need while growing.
  • Lost income: your own time off work, or a parent's time caring for a child.
  • Pain and emotional harm: the injury itself and the anxiety that can follow.
  • Disfigurement: permanent scarring, particularly on the face and hands.

Common Insurance Defenses

Many dog bite claims are paid through the owner's homeowner's or renter's insurance rather than out of a neighbor's pocket. Those insurers often argue provocation or trespass, or that a scar will fade, and they tend to make an offer before treatment ends. Photos taken over months and a surgeon's view of future care usually carry the most weight. If a loose dog caused a crash rather than a bite, our West Jordan car accident page is the better starting point.

West Jordan Dog Bite Questions

What We Hear After a Dog Bite in West Jordan

The dog had never bitten anyone before. Is the owner still liable?

Yes. Under Utah Code § 18-1-1 the owner or keeper is liable whether or not the dog was known to be vicious.

Will my neighbor have to pay out of pocket?

Usually not. Claims like this are typically paid by the owner's homeowner's or renter's insurance.

Do I have to report the bite in West Jordan?

Yes. West Jordan Animal Services says bites to people must be reported to it. Call dispatch at 801-840-4000 or Animal Services at 801-282-3951.

My child was bitten. How long do we have?

The limitations period does not run while a child is under 18, but evidence and witnesses fade, so it is best to act early.

What does it cost to hire you?

The consultation is free, and there are no attorney fees unless we win.

The owner claims I provoked the dog. Is my claim over?

No. Utah's comparative fault rule may reduce a recovery if you share the blame, but it does not end the claim unless your share is as large as the owner's.
