West Jordan Motorcycle Accident Lawyer

Hurt on a motorcycle in West Jordan, on Bangerter, Redwood Road or the Mountain View Corridor? Free consultation, and no attorney fees unless we win.

West Jordan has no canyon road running through it, and that is part of why riders underestimate it. Most miles here are ridden on wide suburban arterials: Bangerter Highway with its rebuilt interchanges, Redwood Road with its long gaps between signals and busy frontage, and the Mountain View Corridor (SR-85) on the west side. Those roads move car traffic quickly past driveways, side streets and turn pockets, and a motorcycle is the vehicle drivers there are least prepared to see.

We represent riders hurt in West Jordan and across the southwest part of the valley. Each file starts with the question the other driver's insurer would rather skip: where was the driver looking, and for how long?

Where West Jordan Riders Get Hit

The classic crash is a left turn. A driver waiting to turn across Redwood Road, 7800 South or 9000 South judges the gap against the cars and misses the bike. Utah Code § 41-6a-903 makes a left-turning driver yield to oncoming traffic close enough to be an immediate hazard, and a motorcycle is traffic like any other. The same section requires a driver pulling onto a road from somewhere other than another road, such as a parking lot, to yield to everyone already on it, which matters along the retail frontage of 7000 South near Jordan Landing.

Utah Rules That Shape a Rider's Claim

Filtering at a stop. A rider may move between stopped vehicles only at 15 mph or less, on a road with two or more lanes in the same direction and a limit of 45 mph or lower, and never on an on-ramp (Utah Code § 41-6a-704(6)). Whether a given West Jordan arterial qualifies depends on the posted limit where you were, so the sign at the scene matters. Our lane filtering guide covers each condition.

Helmets. Utah requires one only for riders under 21. Utah Code § 41-6a-1505 says going without one is not comparative negligence and may not be used as evidence in a civil case on negligence, injuries or damages.

No PIP on the bike. Motorcycle policies do not have to carry personal injury protection, and riders are not covered by PIP for injuries while operating a motorcycle (§ 31A-22-302). Health insurance, any medical-payments coverage you bought and the at-fault driver's liability policy carry the load. Our motorcycle claims guide goes further.

Low limits on the other car. A policy issued or renewed since January 1, 2025 must carry at least $30,000 per person in bodily injury coverage (§ 31A-22-304), an amount a single surgery can exceed. Your own underinsured motorist coverage is often what closes the gap.

Time limits. Most injury suits must be filed within four years, but a claim against a government entity, such as a city vehicle or a defect in a public road, needs a written notice of claim within one year (§ 63G-7-402). Every deadline is on our statute of limitations page.

Bangerter and the Mountain View Corridor

Bangerter Highway (SR-154) is now a hybrid: freeway-style interchanges at crossings such as 7000 South and 9000 South, with signals and access points still between them. Riders get caught in the transitions, where a driver merging off a ramp or slowing for the next light does not account for a smaller vehicle in the lane. The Mountain View Corridor runs farther west with long stretches between signals, and cars pulling out of side streets misjudge how fast a bike is closing. Our West Jordan car accident page describes how these corridors produce crashes more generally.

Inside city limits, crashes are investigated by the West Jordan Police Department, headquartered at 8040 South Redwood Road, and the Utah Highway Patrol may take some highway incidents. Find out which agency wrote the report and get the case number before you leave.

How These Crashes Happen

A driver drifts into a rider's lane on Redwood Road without checking the mirror. A car backs out of a parking aisle at a retail center. Someone rolls a stop sign at a subdivision entrance on the west side. A distracted driver rear-ends a rider waiting at a red light. Construction gravel, a patched seam or a steel plate can also put a bike down, and when a road condition is part of the cause, the one-year notice deadline applies.

Injuries Riders Bring to Us

Broken wrists, collarbones, legs and pelvises; brain injuries even with a helmet; spinal fractures; road rash that needs grafting; and crushed feet and ankles. On the west side, Holy Cross Hospital – Jordan Valley at 3580 West 9000 South lists a Level II state trauma designation, and Intermountain Medical Center in Murray is the area's Level I trauma center.

What a Rider Can Recover

  • Medical costs: the ambulance, surgery, rehabilitation and the care still ahead.
  • Income: wages lost while you heal and any lasting loss of earning ability.
  • The bike and gear: repair or replacement, plus the helmet, jacket and other equipment ruined in the crash.
  • Human losses: pain, limitation and the loss of riding itself. Our damages page explains each category.

Answering the Rider-Bias Argument

Adjusters lean on stereotypes: the rider was speeding, weaving, came out of nowhere. The answer is proof gathered early, including photos of both vehicles and where they came to rest, witness names, footage from businesses and intersections along the route, and any event data the other car recorded. Utah reduces a recovery by the rider's share of fault and bars it when that share is as large as everyone else's combined (§ 78B-5-818), so a few percentage points can decide the case. The steps in a Utah injury case show what follows, and our West Jordan personal injury page covers the city's other injury claims.

Common Questions

West Jordan Rider FAQs

A driver turned left in front of me at a West Jordan intersection. Who is at fault?

Usually the turning driver. Utah Code § 41-6a-903 requires a left-turning driver to yield to oncoming vehicles close enough to be an immediate hazard, motorcycles included. Expect the insurer to question your speed, so keep photos, witness names and any nearby video.

Can the insurer use the fact that I had no helmet?

Not to show fault or reduce damages. Utah Code § 41-6a-1505 says failing to wear protective headgear is not comparative negligence and may not be introduced in civil litigation on negligence, injuries or mitigation of damages.

Does PIP pay my medical bills after a motorcycle crash?

Generally no. Utah does not require personal injury protection on motorcycle policies, and riders are not covered by PIP for injuries while operating a motorcycle (§ 31A-22-302). Health insurance, med-pay and the other driver's liability coverage fill that role.

Is lane filtering legal on West Jordan streets?

Only if every condition in § 41-6a-704(6) is met: the vehicles you pass are stopped, there are two or more lanes in your direction, the limit is 45 mph or less, you go no faster than 15 mph, you are not on an on-ramp, and it is safe. Riding between moving cars is still illegal.

What will a lawyer cost?

Nothing up front. Our fee comes out of a recovery, and there are no attorney fees unless we win. The written agreement explains how case costs are handled.

Where would my case be filed?

Most claims settle without a lawsuit. When one is filed over a West Jordan crash, it usually goes to the Third District Court, which has a courthouse at 8080 South Redwood Road in West Jordan as well as the Matheson Courthouse in Salt Lake City.
