Hurt by a dog in South Jordan or Daybreak? Utah makes the owner answer for it. Free case review, and no attorney fees unless we win. Hablamos Español.
Most dog attacks in South Jordan happen in ordinary places: a front porch during a delivery, a neighbor's backyard, a Daybreak sidewalk, the loop around Oquirrh Lake, or the Jordan River Parkway trail along the city's east side. Often the dog seemed friendly until the moment it was not, and when the person bitten is a child, the injuries and the fear can last for years.
Families often hesitate because the owner is a neighbor or a friend. Most of these claims are handled through the owner's homeowner's or renter's insurance policy, not paid out of the owner's savings, which is exactly what that coverage is for.
Utah's Dog Bite Statute
Owners and keepers are responsible. Utah Code § 18-1-1 makes anyone who owns or keeps a dog liable for injuries it causes, even if the dog had never been vicious and the owner had no warning. A first bite counts.
Only a few exceptions apply. They protect certified police dogs used within agency policy, and owners whose dog, secured in a fence or enclosure on the owner's private property, injures an animal that came in without consent or a trespasser.
Your own conduct still matters. The statute runs damages through Utah's comparative fault rule, § 78B-5-818, which is why insurers claim the dog was provoked. Our damages page explains what can be recovered.
Extra time for children. Under § 78B-2-108, the limitation period does not run while the injured person is under 18. Adults generally have four years; our deadlines page has the specifics.
South Jordan's Leash Rule
South Jordan City Code § 6.12.040 requires a dog to be on a leash no longer than six feet, inside an enclosure, or on the owner's property with the owner present and keeping it there. A violation is a class B misdemeanor, and the ordinance makes the owner of an unrestrained animal strictly liable for the damage it causes. Dogs the city proves vicious face stricter rules, including a leash of no more than three feet and a secure enclosure (§ 6.12.070).
After a bite, get the wound cleaned and examined the same day, since bites infect easily. Then report it: South Jordan Animal Services is at 10882 South Park Road (801-446-4357), and outside business hours police dispatch at 801-840-4000 takes calls about an animal attacking a person. A report creates an official record of the dog and the incident. Photograph the injuries as they heal and write down the owner's name, address and insurer.
If the dog lived at a rental, the landlord or property manager may also be involved, particularly when a broken gate or fence let it out. More on value is in our guides to dog bite compensation in Utah and dog bite settlement ranges.
Dog Bite Injuries
Deep punctures and tears that need stitches or plastic surgery, infections, damaged nerves and tendons in the hands and arms, fractures from being knocked to the ground, facial scars, and a lasting fear of dogs. Riverton Hospital, a Level IV trauma center, is close to South Jordan, and Primary Children's, a Level I trauma center, treats children with the most serious injuries.
What the Claim Should Include
A full claim accounts for:
- Medical care: the ER visit, antibiotics, wound care and follow-up appointments.
- Future procedures: scar revision or reconstruction, including surgery a child may need while growing up.
- Lost income: your own missed work, or a parent's time off to care for a child.
- Pain and emotional harm: the injury itself, and the nightmares and anxiety afterward.
- Scarring: permanent disfigurement, particularly on the face or hands.
Insurer Tactics to Expect
Adjusters commonly argue that the victim provoked the dog, came onto the property without permission, or will heal without a lasting mark, and they may make an offer before treatment is finished. A timeline of photos and a surgeon's view of future care are often the strongest answers. If a loose dog caused a traffic crash, our South Jordan car accident page covers that claim, and our South Jordan personal injury page covers other injuries.

South Jordan Dog Bite FAQs
The dog never bit anyone before. Can the owner still be liable?
Yes. Under Utah Code § 18-1-1, the owner or keeper is liable whether or not the dog was known to be vicious.
The dog belongs to a neighbor. Will they pay out of pocket?
Usually not. Most claims are paid through the owner's homeowner's or renter's insurance.
My child was bitten in Daybreak. When is the deadline?
The statute of limitations does not run while a child is under 18, but photos, witnesses and records are easier to gather now, so it is still smart to act early.
The dog was off leash. Does that matter?
It can. South Jordan requires a dog to be on a leash no longer than six feet, in an enclosure, or on the owner's property under the owner's control, and the city code makes the owner of an unrestrained dog strictly liable for damage it causes.
What does it cost to hire you?
The consultation is free. You pay nothing up front, and no attorney fees unless we win.
The owner says we provoked the dog. What happens now?
Provocation goes to comparative fault. If it is proven, it can reduce a recovery, and it bars one only if your share of fault reaches 50% or more.
