A City Built Faster Than Its Roads

South Jordan has roughly 80,000 residents and has been one of Utah's fastest-growing cities for two decades. Daybreak alone added a town's worth of people, streets and transit. Growth on that scale means constant construction, unfamiliar road layouts, and arterials carrying volumes they were never designed for — a reliable recipe for collisions.

Bangerter Highway (SR-154)

The main north–south route through the city, mid-conversion from signals to interchanges. Drivers meet different rules at different crossings on the same highway, and the crashes cluster at those transitions.

Mountain View Corridor (SR-85)

Fast, relatively new, and still being extended. Unfamiliarity is a genuine crash factor on roads that changed layout since a driver last used them.

10400 and 11400 South

The principal east–west connectors, linking I-15, Bangerter and Mountain View past retail, schools and dense housing. Left-turn and driveway collisions dominate.

Daybreak and the TRAX Red Line

A walkable, transit-served community means far more people on foot and bike than a typical suburb — alongside light rail running at street level. Pedestrian and crossing claims here look more like a city than a suburb.

Transit changes your deadline, not just your route

UTA runs the Red Line into Daybreak, and UTA is a government entity. If a train, a bus, a stop or a UTA vehicle is involved in your injury, Utah's Governmental Immunity Act requires a written notice of claim within one year — not the four you would have against an ordinary driver. People routinely discover this after the window has closed.

Utah Is a No-Fault State — Until It Isn't

Your own Personal Injury Protection coverage pays first regardless of fault: at least the first $3,000 of medical bills and 85% of lost wages, under Utah Code § 31A-22-307. You can pursue the at-fault party directly, under Utah Code § 31A-22-309, once any of these applies:

  • Medical expenses exceed $3,000
  • Permanent disability or permanent disfigurement
  • Dismemberment, or a bone fracture
  • Someone was killed

Most genuine injuries clear that threshold quickly. A fast, modest offer usually means treatment has not yet caught up to the injury.

Fault Is Shared in Utah — and 50% Ends Your Claim

Utah Code § 78B-5-818 cuts your recovery by your percentage of blame and bars it completely at 50%. In a city with this much construction, insurers reach for the conditions — you should have anticipated the lane shift, you were unfamiliar with the layout. Those arguments are answerable, but only with evidence of what the road actually looked like that day.

Deadlines that end cases

Four years for most injury claims from a vehicle crash (§ 78B-2-307). Two years for wrongful death. One year for a notice of claim against a government entity — UTA, the city, or UDOT on the state highways.

What To Do After an Accident in South Jordan

  • Get medical attention the same day. Gaps in treatment are the first thing an insurer points to.
  • Report it — South Jordan Police within the city, UHP on the state highways.
  • Photograph the road as it was — construction layouts change within days and the evidence disappears with them.
  • Collect witness details before anyone leaves.
  • Decline a recorded statement until you have advice.

Civil injury cases from South Jordan are filed in the Third Judicial District Court at the Matheson Courthouse, 450 South State Street.
