Most dog bites in Sandy happen close to home: on a neighborhood sidewalk when a dog bolts out an open garage, at a friend's house, in an apartment complex, or on shared paths like the trails of Salt Lake County's 630-acre Dimple Dell Regional Park, which hikers, cyclists and horseback riders all use. Delivery drivers, mail carriers and service workers are bitten at front doors. Young children are often bitten on the face and head simply because of their height.
Many people hesitate because the dog belongs to a neighbor, a relative or a landlord. In practice, a Utah dog bite claim is usually paid by the owner's homeowner's or renter's insurance, not out of the owner's own savings.
Utah's Dog Bite Statute
Strict liability. Utah Code § 18-1-1 makes anyone who owns or keeps a dog liable for injuries it causes, even if the dog had never shown aggression and the owner had no reason to expect it. A first bite counts.
Limited exceptions. The statute excludes certified law enforcement dogs used under a written agency policy, injuries to another animal that came onto the owner's property while the dog was secured in a fence or enclosure, and injuries to a criminal trespasser on the owner's private property while the dog was secured there.
Comparative fault applies. Damages are figured under § 78B-5-818, so an owner's insurer may argue the injured person provoked the dog. Any share of fault assigned to you reduces the recovery, which is why that argument deserves a close look. The categories of damages are explained on our damages page.
Extra time for minors. The statute of limitations does not run while the injured person is under 18 (§ 78B-2-108); most adult claims must be filed within four years. See our deadlines page.
What to Do After a Bite in Sandy
Clean the wound and get medical care the same day, because bites infect easily; Alta View Hospital at 9660 South 1300 East in Sandy has a 24-hour emergency department. Report the bite to the Sandy Police Department or the city's Animal Services division so there is an official record, and ask whether the dog's rabies vaccination is current. Photograph the wounds as they heal, and get the owner's name, address and insurance company.
When the dog lives in a rental, the landlord or property manager may also be relevant, particularly if a broken gate, fence or common-area problem let the dog get loose.

Injuries From Dog Attacks
Deep punctures and lacerations that need stitches or plastic surgery, scars on a child's face, nerve and tendon damage in the hands and forearms, infections, broken bones and head injuries from being knocked to the ground, and a lasting fear of dogs, especially in children.
Items in a Dog Bite Claim
A full claim should account for:
- Medical care: the ER or urgent care visit, antibiotics, rabies shots if needed, wound care and follow-up.
- Future procedures: scar revision or reconstruction, including surgery a child may need while growing up.
- Income: the injured person's lost wages or a parent's time off work for appointments.
- Pain and emotional harm: the injury itself and the anxiety or nightmares that can follow.
- Scarring and disfigurement: permanent marks, particularly on the face and hands.
Common Insurance Defenses
Adjusters often argue provocation, claim the injured person came onto the property without permission, or suggest the scar will fade, and then make an early offer before the full course of treatment is known. Photos taken over months and a plastic surgeon's opinion about future care usually carry the most weight.

What We Hear After a Dog Bite in Sandy
The dog had never bitten anyone before. Is the owner still liable?
Yes. Under Utah Code § 18-1-1 the owner or keeper is liable whether or not the dog was known to be dangerous.
It was a neighbor's dog. Will they pay out of pocket?
Usually not. Most of these claims are paid by the owner's homeowner's or renter's insurance policy.
My child was bitten. Is there a deadline?
The statute of limitations does not run while the child is under 18, but photos, witnesses and records are easier to gather now, so acting early still helps.
The owner claims I provoked the dog. Is my claim over?
No. Provocation is an argument for reducing a recovery under Utah's comparative fault law, and the owner's side needs evidence to support it.
How much does it cost to hire you?
The consultation is free. You pay nothing up front, and no attorney fees unless we win.
How much is a dog bite claim worth?
It depends on the injury, any scarring, future procedures and how daily life changed. Facial scars on a child and bites that required surgery are valued very differently from minor wounds.
