Utah DOT Crash Data
West Valley City's Most Dangerous Roads
3500 South had 3,150 crashes inside West Valley City from January 1, 2018 through August 4, 2025, about one of every seven on the city's non-freeway streets. The street with the most deaths was a different one: Mountain View Highway, with 9 people killed in 502 crashes. Below are the city's ten busiest crash corridors, where the serious crashes fall, and what drivers were doing.
Each crash in UDOT's public records that falls inside West Valley City's limits was assigned to a street. The assignment uses the state's road map together with the road named in the officer's report, and when a crash happens where two listed streets meet it is counted once, on the street the report names. Interstate and ramp crashes are kept in a separate group, and crashes in parking lots and other private property are left out of the street totals. "Serious or fatal" means the report recorded a death or a suspected serious injury.
UDOT recorded 24,218 crashes in the city over the period. 1,467 were on I-215 or a freeway ramp, 441 on private property, and 95 could not be matched to a street. The remaining 22,215 are the subject of this page: 422 of them were serious or fatal, and 84 people died. That serious-or-fatal share, 1.9%, is below the 2.6% on non-freeway roads across the seven counties in this data (Salt Lake, Utah, Davis, Weber, Summit, Cache and Washington).
One Street, One Crash in Seven
3500 South (SR-171) runs the width of the city, and its 3,150 crashes are 14.2% of the total, well ahead of Redwood Road at 1,913. The most common collision on it was the rear-end crash (38.4%), and its busiest junction was 2400 West, with 243 crashes. UDOT's traffic estimates reach about 46,000 vehicles a day on parts of it.
Volume did not translate into severity. Only 41 of 3500 South's crashes (1.3%) were serious or fatal, and 7 people died on it. Its crossing with Redwood Road stands out on both streets' lists: counting crashes logged on either road, 526 happened at or near that junction, 11 of them serious or fatal. The number of crashes on 3500 South also fell over the period, from 509 in 2018 to 351 in 2024.
Where West Valley City's Crashes Pile Up
Streets are ordered by the number of crashes recorded on them inside city limits, January 2018 through August 4, 2025. Each entry gives the serious or fatal crashes and deaths, then the cross streets where crashes on that road were most often recorded. Highway 201 is an expressway and is not ranked here.
- 3500 South (SR-171) — 3,150 crashes, 41 serious or fatal, 7 deaths. The leading cross streets are 2400 West (243), Redwood Road (145) and 5600 West (121).
- Redwood Road (1700 West, SR-68) — 1,913 crashes, 43 serious or fatal, 8 deaths. 381 of its crashes were at 3500 South, and side-impact collisions were 42.7% of the total, the highest share among these ten.
- 5600 West (SR-172) — 1,577 crashes, 29 serious or fatal, 6 deaths. Its yearly count dropped by half, from 307 in 2018 to 150 in 2024, and it recorded 61 head-on crashes.
- Bangerter Highway (4000 West, SR-154) — 1,257 crashes, 22 serious or fatal, 2 deaths. Rear-end crashes were 51.9% and officers flagged speed in 12.1%, both the highest shares among these ten; UDOT estimates up to 60,000 vehicles a day.
- 4100 South — 1,210 crashes, 21 serious or fatal, 3 deaths. 4000 West (93) and 3600 West (92) were its busiest junctions, and a driver left the scene in 15.9% of its crashes.
- 3100 South — 1,055 crashes, 18 serious or fatal, 1 death. 419 of them, 39.7%, came between 3 and 7 p.m.; 3600 West (66) led its junctions.
- 4700 South — 644 crashes, 12 serious or fatal, 2 deaths. Most were clustered at 4000 West (103) and 3200 West (95).
- 4000 West — 630 crashes, 11 serious or fatal, 2 deaths. 25 crashes involved a pedestrian, 5 of them serious or fatal, and its busiest junction was 3500 South (77).
- 3200 West — 559 crashes, 12 serious or fatal, 3 deaths. At 3100 South, 5 of 49 crashes were serious or fatal, and drivers were flagged for disregarding a signal or sign in 13.6% of the street's crashes.
- Constitution Boulevard (2700 West) — 543 crashes, 16 serious or fatal, no deaths. Its 2.9% serious-or-fatal share is the highest of these ten, and 3500 South (104) was its busiest junction.
These ten streets account for 12,538 crashes, 56.4% of the city's non-freeway total, along with 225 of the 422 serious or fatal crashes and 34 of the 84 deaths. The data spreads the rest across 1,011 named streets.
The Deadliest Road Is Not on the List Above
Mountain View Highway (5800 West, SR-85) ranks 11th by crash count, with 502, but 27 of them were serious or fatal (5.4%) and 9 people were killed, more deaths than on any other street in the city's top fifteen. Three of its junctions carry most of the harm: 4100 South (118 crashes, 9 serious or fatal), 5400 South (86, 6) and 6200 South (102, 5). Side-impact collisions were 19 of its 27 serious crashes. Its yearly crash count rose from 31 in 2018 to 103 in 2024 while the city's total fell. Sorted by serious or fatal crashes, Redwood Road leads with 43, ahead of 3500 South's 41.
Collision Types and Who Gets Hurt
Rear-end crashes (31.7%) and side-impact crashes (31.0%) are nearly even on the city's streets, but they are not equally dangerous. Side impacts account for 168 of the 422 serious or fatal crashes; rear-end collisions for 26. Pedestrians were involved in 2.0% of crashes and 16.1% of the serious or fatal ones; motorcycles in 1.6% and 19.2%. Impairment was flagged in 2.1% of crashes (versus 1.6% across the seven counties) and in 41 of the serious or fatal ones.
The figure that stands apart is hit and run. Officers recorded a driver leaving the scene in 3,639 crashes on the city's streets, 16.4% of the total, almost twice the 8.6% across the seven counties. Crashes peak in the 5 p.m. hour; Friday has the most (3,586) and Sunday the fewest (2,318). The yearly total fell from 3,353 in 2018 to 2,829 in 2024, while serious or fatal crashes held between 48 and 60 a year.
I-215 and Highway 201
Freeway crashes are a small part of West Valley City's record: 1,467 of 24,218. I-215 had 1,027 of them, with 17 serious or fatal and 7 deaths. Highway 201, an expressway, is counted in the street total but kept out of the ranking; it had 1,097 crashes, 19 serious or fatal, including 6 fatal crashes. The data stops at August 4, 2025, and crashes that caused only property damage below Utah's reporting threshold are not in it.
Claims After a West Valley City Collision
Personal injury protection on your own auto policy is the first source of payment: at least $3,000 in medical expenses, regardless of who was at fault (Utah Code § 31A-22-307). To claim pain and suffering from the at-fault driver, the injury must cross the threshold in § 31A-22-309 — a broken bone, permanent impairment or disfigurement, or medical bills over $3,000, among others — and that threshold does not limit an uninsured motorist claim. With hit and runs this common, that matters: a vehicle that leaves the scene and is never identified is treated as uninsured under § 31A-22-305(2)(b), so report it to police and look to your own UM coverage. Fault is shared under § 78B-5-818, and you recover only if the other parties' fault exceeds yours. Most injury suits have a four-year deadline (§ 78B-2-307); a claim that a city or state road was unsafe requires a written notice of claim within one year (§ 63G-7-402). What Compensation Can Cover
- Money already spent or lost: emergency care, doctor and therapy bills, medication, time off work, and the cost of repairing or replacing your car.
- What the injury takes from daily life: pain, interrupted sleep, lost independence, and activities you can no longer do the way you did.
- What the future will cost: treatment your doctors expect you to need, and lost earning capacity if you cannot return to the same work.
Notes on the Data
Source: UDOT's public Crash_Locations records, every crash type, January 1, 2018 through August 4, 2025, the end of the public series. City limits come from UGRC's municipal boundary layer, applied to all years. Each crash was matched to the closest segment of UGRC's Utah Roads within 35 meters, with preference for the road named in the officer's report; across the full dataset that match agreed with the report's road about 89% of the time. Serious or fatal means fatal or suspected serious injury. Traffic volumes are UDOT estimates on state routes from varying years. Driver flags reflect what the investigating officer noted and are not findings of fault. Comparisons use the seven counties in this data. Every city we have ranked this way is listed on our statewide page, Utah’s most dangerous roads.
