Riding out of Magna usually means joining Highway 201, the road that carries traffic east toward West Valley City and Salt Lake City. At the Magna end it is not a sealed-off freeway. Cross streets such as 8000 West, 7200 West and 8400 West (SR-111) still meet it at intersections, so a rider on the highway shares each of those junctions with drivers trying to cross or turn.
That is where serious harm concentrates. In our study of UDOT crash records from January 2018 through August 4, 2025, Highway 201 recorded 435 crashes in Magna, 22 of them serious or fatal, and 6 fatal crashes that killed 7 people, and 17 of its 22 serious or fatal crashes came at just three junctions: 8000 West, 7200 West and SR-111. This page is built around what a rider has to prove after a crash at one of those intersections. For injuries that did not happen on a motorcycle, see our Magna personal injury page.
The Signal Question on Highway 201
Officers flagged a disregarded signal or sign in 11 of Highway 201’s 22 serious or fatal crashes, and across Magna a disregarded signal or sign appeared in 18 of the 73 serious or fatal crashes (24.7%, against 12.3% regionally), according to our Magna most dangerous roads page. When a driver runs a red light or a stop sign into a motorcycle’s path, the proof is perishable: signal timing data for the intersection, video from nearby businesses, and the accounts of drivers who were stopped at the light. Left turns follow their own rule, § 41-6a-903, which requires a left-turning driver to yield to oncoming traffic close enough to be an immediate hazard and a driver entering from a driveway or lot to yield to everything already on the road.
Utah Law for Magna Riders
Filtering at a red light. Section 41-6a-704(6) lets a motorcyclist move between stopped vehicles only if all of these hold: at least two adjacent lanes run in the rider’s direction, the speed limit is 45 mph or less or the rider is on an off-ramp, the rider is not on an on-ramp, the overtaken vehicle is stopped, the motorcycle is at 15 mph or less, and the move is safe. On a roadway posted above 45 mph, filtering is off the table unless you are on a qualifying off-ramp. The subsection expires July 1, 2027 under § 63I-1-241(3); our lane filtering explainer has more.
Helmet use. Section 41-6a-1505 requires a helmet for anyone under 21 on a motorcycle. For riders of every age, subsection (6) keeps a bare head out of the fault fight: it is not comparative negligence and may not be offered as evidence of negligence, injuries or mitigation in civil litigation.
PIP does not follow you onto the bike. Motorcycle policies need not carry PIP, and operators are not covered by it while riding (§ 31A-22-302), so a rider’s claim against the at-fault driver is not limited by the no-fault threshold. Health insurance or med-pay usually carries the first bills; our Utah motorcycle claims guide explains the sequence.
Minimum limits. A driver insured under a policy issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2025 needs only $30,000 per person in bodily injury coverage (§ 31A-22-304). In a serious motorcycle case, much of the remaining value often has to come from underinsured motorist coverage on your own policy.
Public roads, public deadlines. Highway 201, 8400 West and 3500 South are UDOT routes. If a signal failure, debris, a road defect or a government vehicle played a role, a notice of claim must reach the correct entity, whether UDOT, Magna City, Salt Lake County or UTA, within one year (§ 63G-7-402). A standard injury lawsuit must be filed within four years (§ 78B-2-307), and a family suing for wrongful death has two years (§ 78B-2-304); see our statute of limitations page.
Speed, Trucks and 7200 West
Speed was flagged in 144 of Highway 201’s crashes (33.1%), and insurers will try to pin that pattern on the rider. Utah Code § 41-6a-601 requires every driver to hold a speed that is reasonable and prudent for conditions, including when approaching and crossing an intersection, which applies to the pickup crossing the highway as much as to the motorcycle. Industrial traffic serving the Kennecott area uses the same roads, and a crash with a commercial truck brings in company records worth preserving; see our truck accident guide. On 7200 West, which had 348 crashes and 7 serious or fatal in the study period, a motorcycle was in 2 of the serious ones.
The Unified Police Department’s Magna Precinct, 2711 South Buccaneer Drive, handles crashes in Magna and Copperton, and the Utah Highway Patrol may take a crash on Highway 201. Write down which agency responded and the case number; our Unified Police crash report guide covers how to request the report.
Common Magna Motorcycle Collisions
A driver crossing Highway 201 from 8000 West who misjudges how fast a motorcycle is approaching. A left turn across a rider’s lane at a 3500 South signal. A car pulling out of a business on 8400 West. A rear-end impact in stop-and-go traffic where 3500 South meets 7200 West. A work truck changing lanes into a rider its driver never saw. Gravel, debris and broken pavement can contribute too, which raises the question of who maintains that stretch. Motorcycles were in 8 of Magna’s 73 serious or fatal crashes during the study period, one of the lowest shares in that data.
Injuries and Where Riders Are Treated
A rider takes the full force of a collision: head and facial injuries, broken collarbones, wrists and legs, pelvic fractures, spinal cord damage and deep abrasions. There is no hospital in Magna, so the closest emergency departments are in West Valley City and West Jordan. Holy Cross Hospital – West Valley, at 3460 South 4155 West, carries a Level III trauma designation from the state, and Intermountain Medical Center and University Hospital provide Level I care.
Recoverable Damages for Riders
- Out-of-pocket losses: emergency and hospital bills, rehabilitation, lost income, and the value of the motorcycle and protective gear.
- General damages: pain, scarring, emotional strain and time lost from family and riding.
- Future losses: continuing care, reduced earning capacity and home or vehicle modifications.
- Wrongful death: if a rider is killed, the family’s claim carries a two-year deadline; our wrongful death guide explains it.
Countering the Rider-Fault Argument
In Magna claims, adjusters tend to say the rider was speeding on Highway 201, ran the yellow, or was hidden by a truck. The record usually answers: signal phase timing, skid and scrape marks, the car’s event data, crush profiles, and witnesses who were waiting at the junction. Utah divides fault by percentage and allows recovery only while the other parties’ combined fault exceeds yours (§ 78B-5-818), so every point of fault matters. Our Magna car accident page covers local roads and reports.

Magna Motorcycle Crash Questions
A driver crossed Highway 201 at 7200 West and hit me. Who is responsible?
Usually the driver who failed to yield or ran the signal. Signal timing records, junction video and witness statements are the key evidence, and they should be requested quickly.
Can I filter between cars at a red light on Highway 201?
Only where every condition in Utah Code § 41-6a-704(6) is met, including a speed limit of 45 mph or less (or an off-ramp), two or more lanes in your direction, stopped traffic and a speed of 15 mph or less. The rule is scheduled for repeal on July 1, 2027.
Will riding without a helmet hurt my claim?
No. Utah Code § 41-6a-1505(6) bars treating a missing helmet as comparative negligence, and it cannot be used as evidence of negligence, injuries or mitigation of damages in a lawsuit.
A work truck hit me on 8400 West. Is that claim different?
Often. The company that employs the driver may be responsible along with the driver, commercial policies usually carry higher limits, and logs, dispatch and maintenance records should be preserved in writing right away.
How much does hiring your firm cost?
The consultation is free. You pay nothing up front, and no attorney fees unless we win.
How long do I have to file?
Generally four years for an injury claim and two years for wrongful death, but only one year to file a notice of claim if UDOT, Magna City or another public entity may be responsible.
