Farmington's Crash Hot Spots

Farmington is the Davis County seat, and I-15, US-89 and Legacy Parkway all meet here. UDOT's West Davis Highway (SR-177), a 16-mile road running from Farmington to West Point, adds another corridor. Add Lagoon's seasonal crowds and the Station Park shopping district, and a small city handles a great deal of traffic that is only passing through. For injuries beyond vehicle crashes, see our Farmington personal injury page. Our Farmington’s most dangerous roads page ranks the city’s streets by the crashes UDOT recorded.

The I-15, US-89 and Legacy Parkway junction

Drivers choose among three routes in a short distance, and late lane changes cause sideswipes and multi-vehicle crashes. Lane position at the moment of impact is often the whole case, proven with vehicle data and early photos.

West Davis Highway (SR-177)

A newer route that many drivers still do not know well. Traffic patterns are still settling, and drivers unfamiliar with its junctions misjudge where and when to merge.

Park Lane and Station Park

Shoppers circling for parking, people crossing between stores and drivers heading for the freeway all share Park Lane. Low-speed crashes here still cause real injuries, especially to people on foot.

Lagoon traffic

The amusement park draws heavy crowds on its operating days, including fall weekends. Backups on the approach roads, drivers searching for the lot entrance and families walking from parking make for a seasonal pattern of rear-end and pedestrian crashes.

Shepard Lane and the bench streets

Connectors between the highways and older neighborhoods, with driveways and side streets opening onto through traffic and little room to recover from a mistake.

Police and courts in Farmington

Farmington Police investigate crashes on city streets, and the Utah Highway Patrol generally handles I-15, US-89 and Legacy Parkway. Farmington is also home to the Second Judicial District Court for Davis County, at 800 West State Street. If UDOT, Davis County, Farmington City or UTA may share fault, a one-year notice of claim applies.

What Your Policy Covers Right Away

Personal injury protection on your own policy pays first in Utah: a $3,000 minimum toward medical care, plus 85% of lost gross income up to $250 per week for as long as 52 weeks (Utah Code § 31A-22-307). The no-fault guide has the details.

Emergency care at Lakeview Hospital in Bountiful or one of the Layton hospitals can use up that minimum almost at once. To pursue pain and suffering against the at-fault driver, Utah Code § 31A-22-309 requires one of the following:

  • Medical costs above $3,000
  • A fractured bone
  • Objectively documented permanent disability or impairment
  • Permanent disfigurement
  • Dismemberment
  • A fatality

Once you meet one, the responsible driver's liability carrier owes full damages, and underinsured motorist coverage can add to a policy that proves too small.

Fault Disputes in Farmington Cases

Utah Code § 78B-5-818 reduces your award by your share of the fault and bars it entirely when your share is not less than everyone else's combined.

At the highway junction the argument is the timing of a lane change; in the Station Park lots, who had the right of way in an aisle; near Lagoon, following distance in stop-and-go traffic. On public roads, Utah Code § 41-6a-1002 makes drivers yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. Store and parking-lot video is often recorded over quickly, so preservation letters go out early.

Filing deadlines

Four years for most injury claims, two for wrongful death, and one year to file notice with a government entity (Utah Code § 63G-7-402). The deadline guide explains each one.

Farmington Crash Cases We Handle

Highway junction collisions

Multi-vehicle crashes where I-15, US-89 and Legacy Parkway divide and merge, often with more than one insurer blaming the others.

West Davis Highway crashes

Collisions on SR-177, where drivers are still learning the junctions and speeds of a newer road.

Retail-area and parking lot crashes

Backing and turning collisions around Station Park. A private lot still carries liability and insurance.

Pedestrians near Lagoon and Station Park

Families walking from parking and shoppers crossing Park Lane. Our pedestrian claims guide explains how these cases are proven.

Uninsured and fleeing drivers

Your uninsured motorist coverage may pay when the at-fault driver has none or leaves. If there was no contact, Utah Code § 31A-22-305(6) requires clear and convincing evidence, beyond your own account, that the other vehicle existed.

After a Farmington Crash

  • Call 911 and get the report number; note whether Farmington Police or the Highway Patrol responded.
  • Get checked the same day. Lakeview Hospital in Bountiful, Holy Cross Hospital – Davis and Intermountain Layton Hospital are state-designated Level III trauma centers.
  • Photograph the vehicles, lane lines and signs and, in a parking lot, the view the other driver actually had.
  • Take witness names and phone numbers; park visitors and shoppers may be in town only for the day.
  • Start your PIP claim and hold off on any recorded statement to the other insurer. Here is how lawyers handle the insurance claim.

Farmington crash suits are filed right in town, at the Second District courthouse on State Street. Most resolve without a trial, but we prepare each case as if it will be tried.
