Ivins Roads Where Collisions Start

Ivins is a small city whose streets carry far more than local errands. The south entrance of Snow Canyon State Park opens onto the Santa Clara bench here, Tuacahn Center for the Arts runs what is often called the largest professional outdoor theater in Utah, and guests at Black Desert, Red Mountain and the Kayenta art village come and go all day. A lot of the people behind the wheel are looking at red rock instead of the lane.

Snow Canyon Parkway

The main route between Ivins and the north side of St. George carries residents, park visitors and road cyclists at the same time. Long open stretches invite speed right where cars turn in and out of neighborhoods and trailhead lots.

The park road through Snow Canyon

A paved two-lane road enters the park from Ivins, winds up the canyon and climbs the east edge to meet SR-18 on the bench above. Curves, pull-outs, hikers walking to trailheads and drivers slowing for photos all share one lane each way.

Old Highway 91

West and north of town the old highway opens into long rural miles with little shoulder. Passing mistakes and drift over the center line there tend to produce head-on or rollover injuries rather than fender damage.

Tuacahn show nights

When a performance ends, the whole audience leaves a canyon venue at once, after dark, many of them visitors who have never seen the road in daylight, with people still walking back to where they parked.

Resort and golf traffic

Black Desert Resort has hosted a PGA Tour event since 2024, and together with Red Mountain and Kayenta it brings shuttles, delivery vans and rental cars pulling out of driveways onto streets where locals are moving at full speed.

Who investigates an Ivins crash

Ivins shares its police force with its neighbor: the Santa Clara–Ivins Public Safety Department, based at 55 North Main in Ivins, patrols both cities, takes crash reports on city streets and releases copies through a GRAMA records request. Outside the city limits the Washington County Sheriff's Office responds. If a city truck, a signal or a road defect contributed, a written notice of claim is due within one year under Utah Code § 63G-7-402.

Start With Your Own PIP

Utah is a no-fault state, so your own policy's personal injury protection pays before anyone settles who caused the crash: at least $3,000 in medical costs, plus the lesser of $250 a week or 85% of lost gross income for up to 52 weeks (Utah Code § 31A-22-307). How no-fault works in Utah.

The closest designated trauma center is St. George Regional Hospital, listed by the state as Level II, and an ambulance ride plus a CT scan there can exhaust PIP in one visit. Pain and suffering can be claimed from the driver at fault only after one of these conditions in Utah Code § 31A-22-309 is met:

  • More than $3,000 in medical bills
  • A broken bone
  • Permanent impairment shown by objective findings
  • Permanent disfigurement
  • Dismemberment
  • A death caused by the crash

Clear any one of them and the at-fault driver's liability insurer answers for the whole loss. Visitors often drive rentals or carry low out-of-state limits, and your own underinsured motorist coverage can add to what their policy pays.

Sharing Fault After an Ivins Crash

Utah Code § 78B-5-818 lets you recover only when the defendants' combined fault is greater than your own, and any award is reduced by your percentage.

After a show the insurer asks about headlights and where a pedestrian was walking; on the park road, whether you crossed the center line in a curve; at a resort entrance, who had the right-of-way. Utah Code § 41-6a-903(1)(b) requires a driver coming out of a driveway or other access to yield to traffic already on the road. Photos and witness names gathered that evening settle most of these disputes.

Deadlines

Most injury lawsuits must be filed within four years, a wrongful death action within two, and a notice of claim against Ivins City, Washington County or UDOT within one. The deadline guide lists the exceptions.

Ivins Car Crash Claims We Take On

Visitor and rental-car collisions

Guests headed to the park, the resorts or a show are often in rentals insured under another state's rules. Pinning down the rental company's coverage, the driver's own policy and any employer policy early decides how much is actually available.

Night event traffic

Collisions as a Tuacahn audience leaves in one wave, including people on foot struck between the parking areas and the road.

Canyon road crashes

Run-off-road and center-line collisions on the Snow Canyon road, where grade, curves and distracted sightseers combine.

Cyclists and pedestrians

Riders on the Snow Canyon loops and walkers around Kayenta and the neighborhoods. Utah Code § 41-6a-706.5 bars a driver from knowingly or recklessly passing within three feet of a cyclist or pedestrian; see our bicycle claim guide.

Uninsured and hit-and-run drivers

When the other driver has no coverage or leaves, the claim usually moves to your own uninsured motorist policy, which the PIP threshold above does not restrict. Report a hit-and-run to police right away.

After a Crash in Ivins

  • Call 911 and ask whether Santa Clara–Ivins officers or a sheriff's deputy is taking the report, then write down the case number.
  • Get checked that day. St. George Regional Hospital is Washington County's Level II trauma center, and neck, back and head injuries often surface hours later.
  • Photograph the cars, where they stopped, the lighting and any debris or tire marks before anything is moved.
  • Collect names and phone numbers; at a show or trailhead most witnesses are from out of town.
  • Notify your own insurer to open PIP, and hold off on any recorded statement to the other driver's carrier.

Washington County injury suits are filed in the Fifth District Court at 206 West Tabernacle Street in St. George. Most claims resolve before trial, but we build each file as though it will be tried.
