West Point's Changing Roads

West Point, home to 10,963 people at the 2020 census, lies along the eastern shore of the Great Salt Lake, with wetlands on its western edge, Clinton and Hooper to the north, Clearfield to the east and Syracuse to the south. Its roads are a grid of state routes laid over former farm country, SR-37 on 1800 North, SR-110 on 4500 West and SR-107 on 300 North, now joined by the northern end of a freeway that opened in January 2024.

The corridor's end at SR-193

North of Antelope Drive the West Davis Corridor drops to two lanes, bends north into West Point and ends at SR-193, whose westward extension to meet it opened on January 6, 2024, at the same junction as the Bernard F. Fisher Highway. Drivers coming off a freeway at speed and meeting an intersection, plus the lane drop just before it, are a setup for rear-end and angle collisions.

1800 North (SR-37)

SR-37 heads west from Sunset on 1800 North through Clinton and West Point, then turns north at 5000 West and crosses into Weber County toward Hooper. It crosses a flat plain between Ogden Bay and the Wasatch, where long straight stretches invite speed and drivers at cross streets misjudge how quickly oncoming traffic is closing.

4500 West (SR-110)

SR-110 follows 4500 West from Antelope Drive in Syracuse north to 1800 North, west of the Hooper Canal, at about 4,230 feet of elevation with little to break the wind or the view. Pickups, school buses and farm vehicles turning off residential side roads create broadside crash risk.

300 North (SR-107)

A 1.5-mile, two-lane state route from 4500 West east to 3000 West; beyond that, Davis County maintains the old roadway. Passing slow vehicles on a two-lane road leads to head-on and sideswipe crashes, and when a pothole or missing sign is involved, whether UDOT or the county maintains that stretch decides where the notice of claim must go.

Schools and new neighborhoods

Families make up much of West Point's growth, and school-day traffic brings children walking and biking across busy roads. Under Utah Code § 41-6a-1002(2), a driver must come to a full stop at a school crosswalk whenever someone is in it.

Who handles the report

West Point does not have its own police department; the Davis County Sheriff's Office provides dedicated law enforcement service to the city, along with Fruit Heights and South Weber. Troopers may take crashes on the freeway itself. If a sheriff's patrol car, a county plow or a road defect played a role, the claim runs against a government entity and requires a written notice within one year (Utah Code § 63G-7-402).

Paying for Treatment Through PIP

Your own auto policy's personal injury protection responds first, without regard to fault, paying at least $3,000 of medical costs and wage loss at the lesser of 85% of gross income or $250 weekly for up to 52 weeks, per Utah Code § 31A-22-307. More on Utah no-fault.

The closest trauma care is in Layton, where Holy Cross Hospital – Davis and Layton Hospital are Level III centers, while McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden is Level II; a transport from the lakeshore side of the county plus a CT scan can drain the PIP benefit quickly. If you have or must carry PIP, pursuing non-economic damages against the responsible driver requires at least one item on the list in Utah Code § 31A-22-309(1):

  • Medical expenses that exceed $3,000
  • A fracture
  • Objectively documented permanent disability or impairment
  • Permanent disfigurement of any kind
  • Dismemberment, the loss of a limb
  • Death

Once you qualify, the negligent driver's liability insurer is on the hook for the complete loss. If that coverage is thin, underinsured motorist benefits under your own policy can make up the difference; our UIM article explains the rules.

How Fault Is Assigned in West Point Crashes

Under § 78B-5-818, a jury assigns each party a percentage of fault; you collect only if the defendants' combined share is larger than yours, and your award shrinks by your own share.

Expect questions such as whether a driver leaving the corridor actually stopped at SR-193, whether a truck turning onto 4500 West had a clear view down the road, or whether someone passing a tractor on 300 North had enough room. Open country has few business cameras, so the deputy's diagram, vehicle event data and witness names carry extra weight.

When to act

Utah allows four years for most injury suits and two for wrongful death. A notice of claim against West Point City, Davis County or UDOT must be filed within one year. Details are in the Utah limitations guide.

West Point Crash Claims We Handle

Corridor-end collisions

Rear-end and angle crashes where the new freeway meets SR-193 and at the two-lane section just south of it. Neighboring coverage is on our Syracuse car accident page.

Rural intersection crashes

Broadside collisions on 1800 North, 4500 West and 300 North, where a driver from a side road pulls into traffic moving faster than it looks.

Passing and head-on crashes

Two-lane roads with farm machinery and slow trucks tempt drivers to pass. Crossing the center line is usually decisive, but visibility and the other driver's speed still matter.

Children walking or biking

Crashes near schools, bus stops and trail crossings. Riders can start with our bicycle claims guide.

Drivers without coverage

When the at-fault driver is uninsured or vanishes, your own uninsured motorist coverage may pay. A phantom vehicle that never touched you must be proven by clear and convincing evidence beyond your own account under § 31A-22-305(6). See our hit-and-run guide.

Right After a West Point Crash

  • Call 911; a Davis County deputy or a trooper will respond depending on where you are. Ask which agency wrote the report and keep the case number.
  • See a doctor the same day. Whiplash, concussion and internal injuries can feel minor for hours before they worsen.
  • Photograph the vehicles, the intersection or lane drop, the stop signs or signals, and the view each driver had.
  • Ask everyone who stopped for a name and phone number; there may be no other record of what they saw.
  • Open a PIP claim with your own insurer, and decline to give the other driver's company a recorded statement until you know how badly you are hurt.

A lawsuit from a West Point crash is filed in the Second Judicial District Court for Davis County at 800 West State Street in Farmington.
