How Traffic Moves Through Smithfield

Smithfield sits at the north end of the Logan urban area, and US-91 is the road that ties it to everything else: south through Hyde Park and North Logan into Logan, and north toward Richmond. SR-218 leaves US-91 in Smithfield and heads west across the valley floor to SR-23 near Newton. New homes on both sides of the highway keep adding cross streets and driveways to a road that also carries through traffic.

US-91 through town

The highway is also Smithfield's business strip. Drivers braking to turn into stores, schools and churches share the lanes with others pulling out to join faster through traffic, and the result is a steady run of rear-end and broadside claims.

The commute south to Logan

The drive through Hyde Park and North Logan is a chain of signals, merges and turn lanes. Tailgating in stop-and-go traffic is the usual cause, and the insurer will study each driver's speed and spacing.

SR-218 west toward Newton

The state route across the farm country west of town has long open stretches that invite speed, crossed by side roads and field entrances. Angle crashes at those crossings and collisions with slow farm equipment are the recurring pattern.

Winter on the north valley roads

Snow, ice and poor visibility come with Cache Valley winters, and the open roads north of Logan get little shelter from drifting. A driver who kept summer speed is usually the one at fault, though the insurer may question your tires and following distance too.

School and neighborhood traffic

Sky View High School is in Smithfield, so morning and afternoon traffic brings new drivers, buses and students on foot onto the same streets. Left turns into subdivisions and crossings near schools account for many local claims.

Who responds in Smithfield

Smithfield has its own police department, based at 55 East 100 South, which handles crashes on city streets. On state highways outside city limits the Utah Highway Patrol or the Cache County Sheriff's Office may respond instead. A claim that involves a city vehicle, a road defect or UDOT requires a written notice within one year under § 63G-7-402.

PIP Covers the First Bills

Before anyone decides fault, your own personal injury protection pays. It covers reasonable medical care to at least $3,000 and replaces lost gross income at 85%, never more than $250 a week, for as long as 52 consecutive weeks (§ 31A-22-307). Our guide to Utah no-fault walks through it.

An ambulance to Logan Regional Hospital and a set of scans can pass that minimum quickly. You can pursue the at-fault driver for non-economic losses only if § 31A-22-309(1) is satisfied by one of the following:

  • Over $3,000 in reasonable medical charges
  • A fractured bone
  • Objectively documented permanent impairment or disability
  • Permanent disfigurement
  • Dismemberment
  • Death

Once one of those applies, the negligent driver's liability carrier is answerable for the whole loss, and underinsured coverage you bought can sit on top of a thin policy; here is how that works in Utah.

Comparative Fault in Cache Valley

Utah's comparative negligence law, § 78B-5-818, cuts an award by the injured person's share of fault and allows recovery only when the defendants together were more at fault.

Smithfield disputes often center on a vehicle turning off US-91, speed on snow or ice, or who reached a rural crossroads first. Photos of the road surface, the officer's report and statements from people who stopped carry the most weight when collected within days.

Time limits

Four years for most injury suits (§ 78B-2-307), two for wrongful death, and one year to notify Smithfield City, Cache County or UDOT of a claim. Read our statute of limitations guide.

Crash Cases From Smithfield

Highway turning collisions

Along US-91, where cars slow for businesses and side streets while through traffic keeps moving.

Rear-end commuter crashes

In the signal-to-signal traffic between Smithfield and Logan, where one distracted glance becomes a chain collision.

Rural road and farm-equipment crashes

On SR-218 and county roads west of town, where high closing speeds meet tractors, trailers and unmarked crossings.

Pedestrian and school-zone crashes

Students and residents walking near schools and along the highway. Visibility and the exact crossing point usually decide fault; our pedestrian claims guide explains more.

Hit-and-run and uninsured drivers

If the driver who hit you had no insurance, or drove off and was never identified, § 31A-22-305 lets your uninsured motorist coverage step in. Our hit-and-run guide lists what to do first.

Right After a Smithfield Crash

  • Call 911 and note whether Smithfield Police, the sheriff or the Highway Patrol responds, along with the case number.
  • Be evaluated the same day. Logan Regional Hospital is a Level III trauma center; the closest Level II centers are McKay-Dee Hospital and Ogden Regional Medical Center in Ogden.
  • Take pictures of both vehicles, any snow or ice, lane lines, stop signs and debris before tow trucks arrive.
  • Ask witnesses for names and numbers while they are still at the scene.
  • Notify your insurer so PIP benefits begin, and decline a recorded interview with the other insurer until a doctor has seen you.

Cache County injury suits are filed in the First Judicial District Court, which serves Box Elder, Cache and Rich counties. Many claims settle before that point, but the evidence work begins right away. Call (801) 921-5134. Free consultation. No attorney fees unless we win. Hablamos Español.
