Murray Rideshare Accident Lawyer

Hurt in an Uber or Lyft in Murray? The coverage that pays depends on what the driver's app showed at the moment of impact, and our legal team works to prove it. Free consultation, no attorney fees unless we win. Hablamos Español.

A lot of Murray rideshare trips start or end at a rail platform or a hospital door. Murray Central is where FrontRunner (140 West Vine Street) meets the TRAX Blue and Red lines (5144 South Cottonwood Street), and since April 12, 2026 it has also been the east end of UTA's Midvalley Express bus line to West Valley Central. Intermountain Medical Center sits just east on Cottonwood Street, so patients, visitors and night-shift staff call cars there around the clock, and Fashion Place draws its own steady stream of pickups off State Street.

Those pickups happen in tight spots: station loops, hospital entrances, mall lots and State Street curb lanes where drivers stop suddenly to find a rider. When a crash follows, the first question is not who was careless but which insurance layer was switched on. Utah answers that by the driver's app status, and state law, not a city ordinance, sets the rule: Utah Code § 13-51-109 makes the state act override local regulation of rideshare companies and drivers, apart from rules at airports.

Three App States, Three Levels of Coverage

Utah Code § 13-51-108 ties the required insurance to what the driver was doing in the app. For a Murray crash it works out like this:

  • Logged out. The rideshare coverage the statute requires does not apply, so the driver's own auto policy is the starting point. Personal policies may exclude rideshare driving (§ 13-51-108(11)), which is why an insurer may argue over whether the app was really off.
  • Logged in, no trip accepted. The law calls this the waiting period and requires at least $50,000 for one injured person, $100,000 for everyone hurt in the occurrence, and $30,000 for property damage.
  • Trip accepted through drop-off. A prearranged ride starts when the driver accepts the request and lasts until the passenger gets out (§ 13-51-102). During that span Utah requires $1,000,000 per occurrence in liability coverage, with PIP, uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage to the extent Utah insurance law requires them.

A driver circling Murray Central to meet a FrontRunner arrival may be in the waiting period one minute and on an accepted trip the next. We request the acceptance time, the trip log and the GPS data from the company rather than relying on an adjuster's summary. Our guide to rideshare insurance in Utah walks through each period.

Who Can Bring a Murray Rideshare Claim

The rideshare policy can protect people on both sides of the collision:

  • Riders picked up at Murray Central, Intermountain Medical Center or Fashion Place.
  • Other motorists on State Street, Vine Street or the I-215 ramps hit by a rideshare car.
  • People on foot crossing to a TRAX platform, a bus stop or a hospital entrance.
  • Uber and Lyft drivers injured by another driver while logged in.

Which policies are available depends on your role and the driver's app status. If no rideshare car was involved, see our Murray car accident lawyer page.

Utah Law Behind a Murray Rideshare Claim

PIP benefits pay early medical bills and some lost income no matter who caused the crash (§ 31A-22-307; how no-fault works). Utah Code § 78B-5-818 lets you recover only when the fault of those you sue is greater than yours, and your share reduces the award. Most injury suits have a four-year deadline, but a crash involving a UTA train or bus or a Murray City vehicle requires a notice of claim within one year (§ 63G-7-402). See our Utah filing deadlines.

Murray Details That Shape the Case

Murray City Police handle crashes on city streets, and the Utah Highway Patrol usually handles I-15 and I-215. Intermountain Medical Center, a Level I trauma center, is on Cottonwood Street, so treatment records are often already local. If a lawsuit is needed, it goes to Salt Lake County's Third District Court at the Matheson Courthouse, 450 South State Street, or the West Jordan courthouse on Redwood Road. For injuries that did not involve a vehicle, our Murray personal injury page has more.

Damages in a Murray Rideshare Case

  • Financial losses: ER and hospital charges, follow-up care, time away from work and any lasting loss of earning power.
  • Human losses: pain, anxiety about getting back in a car, and activities you can no longer enjoy.
  • Future treatment: surgery, therapy and home help for injuries that don't fully heal. Our article on what drives Uber passenger settlement amounts covers the factors.
  • Wrongful death: claims for families when a rideshare crash takes a life.

Murray Rideshare Questions

Questions After an Uber or Lyft Crash in Murray

My Lyft crashed on the way from Murray Central to Intermountain Medical Center. Whose insurance pays?

Because you were on an accepted trip, Utah requires rideshare coverage of at least $1,000,000 per occurrence, plus the PIP and UM/UIM coverage the law requires. If another driver caused the crash, that driver's insurer may owe the claim as well.

Does Murray have its own rideshare rules?

No. Under Utah Code § 13-51-109 the state act overrides city regulation of rideshare companies and drivers, except for rules at airports, so the same coverage rules apply in Murray as elsewhere in Utah.

The driver says the app was off. How do we check?

The company keeps log-in, acceptance and GPS records. We ask for them early and compare them with your receipt, messages and any photos taken at the scene.

What does a Murray rideshare accident lawyer cost?

The consultation is free and the case is handled on contingency. You pay nothing up front, and no attorney fees unless we win.

How long do I have?

Generally four years to sue for injuries and two years for wrongful death. If UTA or Murray City is involved, the notice of claim is due within one year.

What should I do at the scene?

Get medical care, screenshot the trip, note the driver's name and plate, photograph the vehicles and the street, collect witness contacts, and take down the police case number.
