Riverton Bicycle Accident Lawyer

Hit while riding in Riverton, on Redwood Road, 12600 South or near a trailhead? Free consultation, and no attorney fees unless we win. Hablamos Español.

Riverton has more trail than most people realize. The Jordan River Trail has two trailheads in the city, at Dr. O. Roi Hardy Park, 12400 River Vista Drive, and at Riverbend, 12765 South 1125 West, a short ride from Riverton City Park. On the west side, the Mountain View Trail starts at Mountain View Park and runs north along the corridor, the Rose Creek Trail leaves Monarch Meadows Park toward Herriman, and sections of the Midas Creek Trail sit on both sides of Bangerter Highway. Getting from one to another usually means riding on, or across, busy roads.

That is where most serious bike injuries happen: where a trail user meets a driver who was not expecting one. Riverton's residential streets also carry a lot of kids riding to school and to parks. For injuries that did not involve a bike, see our Riverton personal injury page.

The Law on Riverton Roads

Equal rights on the road. Utah Code § 41-6a-1102 gives a bicycle rider the rights of any other vehicle operator, so a driver turning left at Redwood Road and 12600 South has to yield to an oncoming bike close enough to be a hazard, just as to a car (§ 41-6a-903). Passing distance. Under § 41-6a-706.5, a motorist may not knowingly, intentionally or recklessly drive within three feet of a cyclist or try to force one off the road.

Lane position. A slower rider keeps near the right edge only as far as practicable; § 41-6a-1105 allows moving left to pass, turn left, avoid a conflicting right-turn-only lane, or get around hazards such as gravel, parked cars or a lane too narrow to share. Lane shifts and barrels in construction zones create exactly those conditions. Backing. A driver may not back up unless it can be done safely and without interfering with other traffic (§ 41-6a-1701), which matters on residential streets and in trailhead lots.

Coverage After a Riverton Bike Crash

Payment usually comes from one or more of these:

  • The driver's liability insurance, the main source for medical costs, lost wages and pain once the driver's fault is shown.
  • Your own household auto policy: its PIP may pay early medical bills and lost wages depending on its terms, and its UM and UIM coverage can respond when the driver fled or is underinsured.

Policies issued or renewed since January 1, 2025 must carry at least $30,000 per person in bodily injury coverage (§ 31A-22-304), and a trauma transfer plus surgery can exceed that. Finding every policy early is part of the work; our guide to Utah bicycle claims explains the order they pay in.

Fault, Helmets and Filing Deadlines

Utah compares fault: whatever share is assigned to you comes off the award, and 50% or more ends the claim (§ 78B-5-818). The helmet requirement in § 41-6a-1505 covers riders under 21 on e-bikes, not pedal bicycles, and a missing helmet may not be introduced as evidence of negligence in a civil case. Four years is the usual limit for an injury suit; a claim involving a UDOT work zone, a UTA bus or a Riverton City vehicle needs a notice of claim within one year. All the deadlines.

Riverton Trails and the Roads Between Them

Redwood Road and 12600 South. The city's main crossroads, with UTA bus routes added in April 2025 and heavy turning traffic into shopping centers. Bangerter at 13400 South. Rebuilt as an interchange in 2025, where drivers leaving the ramps look for gaps in traffic, not for bikes. The Mountain View Corridor. Signalized crossings on a fast road, with lane closures that narrow the space riders share. Trailhead lots. Parking at Roi Hardy Park and the Riverbend Trailhead, where drivers backing out meet riders coming off the Jordan River Trail.

Once you are on a trail, the rules shift. A cyclist on a path must yield to walkers and give an audible signal before passing, and has a pedestrian's rights and duties in a crosswalk (§ 41-6a-1106). The Jordan River Commission allows Class 1 e-bikes on the Jordan River Parkway but not Class 2 or 3. Riverton Police investigate collisions on city streets, and the Riverton Justice Court at City Hall, 12830 South Redwood Road, hears traffic citations; your injury claim is a separate civil case.

How Riverton Riders Get Hit

Drivers pulling out of neighborhood streets onto 12600 South without seeing a bike, left turns across Redwood Road, right turns into retail lots across a rider going straight, drivers backing out of driveways where children ride, close passes on two-lane roads, and shifted lanes in construction zones.

Cycling Injuries and Local Care

Fractured collarbones, wrists and hips, concussions, neck and back injuries, broken teeth and road rash. Intermountain Riverton Hospital is a Level IV trauma center that evaluates and stabilizes; the most seriously hurt are commonly sent on to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, a Level I center. If you carry PIP, a fracture or more than $3,000 in medical bills is one of the ways to meet the threshold for a pain-and-suffering claim (§ 31A-22-309).

Losses You Can Claim

  • Financial losses: treatment, therapy, lost pay and earning ability, and the cost of repairing or replacing your bike and gear.
  • Human losses: pain, stress, and the trails, rides and family time the injury has taken.
  • Long-term care: future procedures and support for injuries that will not fully heal.

How the Other Side Defends These Cases

Insurers say the rider shot out of a trail crossing, was on the wrong side of the road, or was hard to see in low light, and then offer to close the file quickly. Scene photos, the bike's damage pattern, data from a ride-tracking app or bike computer, doorbell video and witness names answer those claims, but they have to be collected early. If you were driving, see our Riverton car accident page.

Common Questions

Riverton Cyclist FAQs

A driver backed into me in the Riverbend Trailhead lot. Who is at fault?

Usually the driver, though not always entirely. Utah Code § 41-6a-1701 bars backing unless it can be done safely and without interfering with other traffic, and a cyclist moving through a lot still has to watch for cars. Photos of the lot and any camera footage usually decide it.

A construction zone on Mountain View pushed me into traffic. Can the contractor be responsible?

Possibly. Poor signage, debris or a lane closure that left no room can make a contractor share fault, and if UDOT or another public body is involved, a notice of claim is due within one year.

My child was hit riding to school. What should we do first?

Get medical care, report the crash to Riverton Police, photograph the street and the bike, and collect names of witnesses and of nearby homes with cameras. Hold off on a recorded statement to the driver's insurer until you have advice.

Can my car insurance help if I was on a bike?

Often. Your PIP may pay early medical bills and part of lost wages, depending on who the policy covers, and uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage may apply if the driver fled or lacked enough insurance.

What do you charge?

The consultation is free. You pay nothing up front, and no attorney fees unless we win.

How long do I have to file?

Generally four years for an injury claim and two for wrongful death, but only one year for a notice of claim against a government entity.
