Lehi has invested heavily in trails. The city counts more than 27 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, and its trail list includes a 9.16-mile Lehi section of the Jordan River Parkway, 5.15 miles of the Murdock Canal Trail and 4.51 miles of the Historic Utah Southern Rail Trail. On Traverse Mountain, the Mayors’ Trail links to Draper’s system and Lehi’s Dream Trail is set aside for downhill mountain biking. Reaching any of them usually means riding streets that were widened for Silicon Slopes commuters.

When a car and a cyclist collide, the insurer tends to begin by questioning the rider: too fast downhill, off the path, impossible to see. Utah treats a person on a bicycle as a vehicle operator with every right a driver has on the road (§ 41-6a-1102). Our office is in Draper, just across Traverse Mountain, and the Lehi personal injury page covers the city’s other injury claims.

Utah Law for Riders in Lehi

Three feet when passing. Motorists may not knowingly, intentionally or recklessly operate within three feet of a bicyclist or other vulnerable road user, or try to force one off the road (§ 41-6a-706.5). On the steep, curving residential streets of Traverse Mountain, a motorist without room to give that space has to stay back until there is room.

When a rider may take more of the lane. Section 41-6a-1105 lets a cyclist leave the right edge to pass, to turn left, to go straight beside a right-turn-only lane, or to avoid hazards such as parked cars, debris and lanes too narrow to share. Riders must travel with traffic and ride no more than two abreast on a roadway, and they may treat a stop sign as a yield after slowing, though not at an active rail crossing.

Coverage That May Apply in Lehi

A collision with a vehicle can bring in several policies:

  • The motorist’s liability policy, which pays for the harm its insured driver caused.
  • Your own household’s auto insurance. PIP is available to the named insured and relatives in the household when hurt in an accident involving any motor vehicle (§ 31A-22-308). If the driver was uninsured, underinsured or left the scene, UM and UIM coverage may apply. See how no-fault works in Utah.

A policy issued or renewed after 2024 may carry as little as $30,000 per person in bodily injury coverage (§ 31A-22-304), and a serious crash can go well past that. Our Utah bicycle claims guide explains the rest.

Fault Rules, Helmets and Deadlines

Fault is apportioned by percentage (§ 78B-5-818); you recover only if the defendants’ combined fault is greater than yours, and your own share is subtracted. The helmet law (§ 41-6a-1505) covers riders under 21 on e-bikes, not pedal bikes, and failure to wear one is not comparative negligence. Most injury suits have four years; claims against Lehi City, Utah County, UDOT or UTA require a notice of claim within one year. Details are on the deadlines page.

Lehi Roads and Trails Where Crashes Happen

Timpanogos Highway near I-15, where ramps, signals and turning traffic meet in a short stretch. Pioneer Crossing and 2100 North, wide commuter arterials with long gaps between signals. Ashton Boulevard around Thanksgiving Point and the nearby Lehi FrontRunner station, where riders mix with office and visitor traffic. Murdock Canal Trail access, where trailheads and road crossings bring the path back to cars. Traverse Mountain, with steep residential climbs and busy trailheads.

Crashes on the Jordan River Parkway or the canal trail usually involve another rider or a walker rather than a car. There, a cyclist must yield to pedestrians, signal before overtaking them, keep a reasonable speed, and not ride negligently into anyone (§ 41-6a-1106). On Traverse Mountain, where the city marks some trails hiking-only and one downhill-only, whether a rider ignored those designations can bear on fault.

Frequent Causes of Lehi Bike Crashes

Drivers turning across riders at the Timpanogos Highway ramps and Thanksgiving Point entrances, left turns across an oncoming cyclist (§ 41-6a-903), motorists pulling out of tech-campus and retail lots, close passes on climbing streets, car doors opened into traffic (§ 41-6a-1704), and backing out of driveways in new subdivisions (§ 41-6a-1701). Our dooring guide has more.

Injuries in Lehi Cycling Cases

Broken collarbones, ribs and legs, head and brain injuries, spine injuries, facial fractures and road rash. For a person who has or must have PIP, a bone fracture is one of the § 31A-22-309 conditions that permits a pain-and-suffering claim. Holy Cross Hospital – Mountain Point in Lehi and American Fork Hospital are Level III trauma centers, and Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital’s Miller Family Campus in Lehi treats injured children.

Losses a Claim Can Include

  • Economic damages: treatment costs, future care, lost income and earning capacity, and the bike and gear.
  • Non-economic damages: pain, distress and the riding and other activities you can no longer do.
  • Future care: therapy and support for injuries with lasting effects.

How Insurers Respond

Expect arguments that you came off a trail without looking, descended too fast, lacked lights after dark or had no helmet. The Lehi Police report (the department is at 128 North 100 East), traffic and business video, ride-tracking data and the damage to the bike usually tell a fuller story. If you were in a car, see our Lehi car accident page.

Common Questions

Lehi Cyclist FAQs

A car passed too close on a Traverse Mountain climb and I crashed. Do I have a claim?

Possibly, even with no contact. Utah Code § 41-6a-706.5 prohibits a driver from knowingly, intentionally or recklessly coming within three feet of a cyclist or forcing one off the road. Witnesses, video and ride data help prove a close pass.

Another cyclist hit me on the Jordan River Parkway. Can I recover?

You may. Riding a bicycle negligently into another rider or a pedestrian is prohibited in Utah, and a homeowner’s or renter’s policy held by the other rider may pay. Speed, passing warnings and trail markings usually decide fault.

Can my auto insurance help after a bike crash?

Frequently. PIP extends to the named insured and household relatives hurt in an accident involving a motor vehicle, and UM or UIM coverage may apply if the driver fled or was underinsured.

Does a missing helmet hurt my case?

No. Utah requires helmets only for riders under 21 on e-bikes, and the statute says not wearing one is not comparative negligence and cannot be used as evidence on negligence or damages.

What does a bicycle accident lawyer cost?

The consultation is free. You pay nothing up front, and no attorney fees unless we win.

What is the deadline after a Lehi bike crash?

Most injury suits must be filed within four years, and wrongful death within two. A claim against Lehi City, Utah County, UDOT or UTA requires a written notice within one year.
