Saratoga Springs Pedestrian Accident Lawyer
Hit by a car while walking in Saratoga Springs, near a school, a trail crossing or Redwood Road? Free case review. No attorney fees unless we win. Hablamos Español.
Saratoga Springs sits along the west shore of Utah Lake, and new neighborhoods keep filling in between Redwood Road, Pioneer Crossing and SR-73. Children walk to school across collector streets that now carry through traffic, and the Jordan River Parkway Trail and the Shoreline Trail bring walkers, runners and families to road crossings.
The city's police page links drivers and parents to Safe Routes Utah resources and to Utah's school-zone traffic control standards, a sign of how much local pedestrian safety centers on kids and school routes. When a child or an adult is struck anyway, the driver's insurer will still look for a way to move the blame.
School Zones, Crosswalks and Trail Crossings
In a reduced-speed school zone the lawful speed is 20 mph (Utah Code § 41-6a-601), and a driver must come to a complete stop at a school crosswalk while anyone is in it. At every other crosswalk, drivers must slow or stop for a pedestrian on their half of the road or one near enough from the other half to be in danger, and may not pass a car stopped for someone crossing (§ 41-6a-1002).
Utah treats any spot marked with lines for pedestrians, at an intersection or mid-block, as a crosswalk (§ 41-6a-102), so a striped trail crossing carries the same yield duty. A driver who stops at a stop sign must also yield to people in the adjacent crosswalk (§ 41-6a-902). Our pedestrian claims guide covers how fault is split. For statewide crash figures and Utah crosswalk law, see our Utah pedestrian accident lawyer page.
Where the Money Comes From
Several coverages can come into a Saratoga Springs pedestrian claim:
- PIP. Your household's auto policy covers you as a pedestrian; if there is none, the PIP on the vehicle that struck you can cover a pedestrian injured in Utah (§ 31A-22-308). Expect at least $3,000 for medical care and 85% of lost gross income, with a $250 weekly cap for up to 52 weeks. Learn more about Utah's no-fault rules.
- Liability coverage. The at-fault driver's policy pays general damages once your injury meets a condition in § 31A-22-309, including a fracture, permanent impairment or more than $3,000 in medical bills.
A driver with too little insurance, or one who leaves the scene, may push the claim onto your own uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. Call 911 immediately and gather witness names; our hit-and-run guide explains why.
Comparative Fault and State Highways
Utah reduces your recovery by your percentage of fault and denies it at 50% or more (§ 78B-5-818). Redwood Road, Pioneer Crossing, SR-73 and Mountain View Corridor are UDOT highways, so if a signal, work zone or road defect played a role, a notice of claim is due within one year (§ 63G-7-402); a claim against only the driver usually has four years. Our deadline guide lays them out.
Saratoga Springs Locations Where Walkers Are Exposed
Redwood Road (SR-68), a signalized arterial in town with busy turn pockets that becomes an undivided two-lane highway at open-road speed farther south. Pioneer Crossing (SR-145) at Redwood Road, a fast divided route that still stops at signals, where turning drivers watch for a gap in cars. SR-73, crowded with Cedar Valley commuters at rush hour. Neighborhood collectors and school routes, where children cross and cars back out of driveways. Mountain View Corridor construction, where shifting lanes and temporary striping change crossings week to week.
Who investigates: the Saratoga Springs Police Department, in the Public Safety Building at 367 South Saratoga Road, handles most crashes on city streets, and the Utah Highway Patrol often takes crashes on the state routes. Get the case number and agency name. A Saratoga Springs suit is filed in the Fourth Judicial District Court at 137 North Freedom Boulevard in Provo.
The Usual Causes
A driver turning right on red onto Redwood Road without checking the crosswalk, a left turn from Pioneer Crossing timed to oncoming traffic, speeding through a school zone at drop-off, a car reversing out of a driveway into a child (§ 41-6a-1701 allows backing only when it is safe), and drivers confused by a work-zone lane shift.
Injuries and Emergency Treatment
Walkers struck at arterial speed suffer broken legs and hips, head and neck injuries, and internal trauma; children can suffer serious facial and head injuries even at lower speeds. American Fork Hospital at 170 North 1100 East runs a 24/7 emergency department, and serious cases may be transferred to larger trauma centers.
Losses a Claim Can Cover
- Economic damages: emergency care, specialist visits, therapy, a parent's missed work while caring for a child, and lost future income.
- Non-economic damages: pain, scarring, fear of walking near traffic, and lost time with friends and activities.
- Future treatment: surgery, counseling and equipment for injuries that last.
- Family losses: a wrongful death claim, with a two-year deadline, can be brought when someone is killed. Our wrongful death guide has more.
The Insurer's Playbook
Expect claims that a child darted into the road, that you crossed outside a marked crossing, or that the driver's view was blocked. Signal timing data, doorbell and dashcam video, and photographs of any construction layout can answer them, but work-zone layouts may be gone within days. For crashes between vehicles, see our Saratoga Springs car accident page; for other injuries in the city, our Saratoga Springs personal injury page.

What Saratoga Springs Families Ask After a Pedestrian Crash
My child was hit in a school zone. What speed was the driver allowed to go?
In a reduced-speed school zone, Utah Code § 41-6a-601 sets the lawful speed at 20 mph, and § 41-6a-1002 requires a complete stop at an occupied school crosswalk.
Does a striped trail crossing count as a crosswalk?
Yes. Utah Code § 41-6a-102 defines a crosswalk to include any part of a roadway marked with lines for pedestrian crossing, at an intersection or elsewhere, so drivers must yield there.
I was hit on Redwood Road. Does it matter that it is a state highway?
Only if a road condition, signal or work zone contributed. Then UDOT may share fault and a notice of claim is due within one year. A claim against the driver alone generally has four years.
Our family has no car insurance. Can PIP still help?
Often. Under Utah Code § 31A-22-308, the PIP on the vehicle that struck you can cover a pedestrian injured in Utah.
How is your fee handled?
The consultation is free. You pay nothing up front, and no attorney fees unless we win.
When should we contact a lawyer?
Early. The notice deadline for a government claim is one year and most other claims have four, but work-zone layouts and doorbell video can disappear within days.
