Salem's Crash Corridors

Salem is a farm town turned commuter suburb in south Utah County. SR-198, an old routing of US-6 and US-50, runs about 16 miles from I-15 at Santaquin through Payson and Salem to Spanish Fork, and SR-164 along 8000 South links it to I-15. Loafer Mountain Parkway adds a newer connection toward the freeway. Read our Salem personal injury page for injuries other than crashes.

SR-198 through town

A state highway with driveways, farm accesses and side streets opening straight onto it. Pull-outs and left turns across traffic are the classic crash, and a driver entering from a driveway or field must yield to vehicles already on the road under Utah Code § 41-6a-903.

SR-164 and 8000 South

The short route to I-15 at exit 253 crosses open ground with long sight lines that invite speed. Closing on a slower vehicle is where the damage happens.

Loafer Mountain Parkway

A newer route carrying traffic from Salem, Elk Ridge and Woodland Hills toward the freeway. Unfamiliar junctions and higher speeds make gap misjudgments common.

Farm equipment on the highway

Tractors and hay trucks enter from field gates, not intersections. Utah Code § 41-6a-706.5 treats a person on a farm tractor without an enclosed shell as a vulnerable road user and bars knowingly, intentionally or recklessly driving within three feet of one.

Salem Pond and Salem Days

The pond draws walkers and families, and the August Salem Days parade puts crowds on residential streets; the police department has reminded parents to keep children behind the curb. Our pedestrian guide covers claims by people on foot.

Who responds to a Salem crash

The Salem Police Department, at 30 West 100 South, handles crashes inside city limits. The Utah Highway Patrol or the Utah County Sheriff's Office may take crashes on the state routes and county roads outside town. If a road defect, work zone or government vehicle played a part, a one-year notice of claim applies.

PIP: The First Check After a Crash

Utah auto policies include personal injury protection that pays at least $3,000 in medical bills and 85% of gross income lost, up to $250 each week for as long as 52 weeks, no matter who was at fault (Utah Code § 31A-22-307). See Utah no-fault basics.

An ambulance to Spanish Fork Hospital or Mt. View Medical Center in Payson can consume much of that. Suing the at-fault driver for pain and suffering requires one of the following under Utah Code § 31A-22-309:

  • Medical expenses beyond $3,000
  • Fracture of a bone
  • Permanent disability based on objective findings
  • Permanent disfigurement of the body
  • Dismemberment
  • Death of the injured person

Meeting any one lets you claim your entire loss from the negligent driver's insurer, and underinsured motorist benefits can fill a gap when that policy is small.

Comparative Fault on Rural Highways

Utah Code § 78B-5-818 allows recovery only where the other side's combined fault tops yours, and your own percentage reduces the award.

On SR-198 and 8000 South the defense usually argues speed: you should have seen the tractor or slowed for the pull-out. Slow-moving-vehicle emblems, lighting, skid marks and the angle of the field gate are evidence that vanishes once the equipment goes back to work.

How long you have

Four years is the general window for injury lawsuits and two years for wrongful death, while a notice of claim against Salem City, Utah County or UDOT must be filed within one year (Utah Code § 63G-7-402). See the Utah filing deadlines.

Salem Crash Claims We Handle

Highway pull-out and turning crashes

Vehicles entering SR-198 from driveways, side streets and farm gates in front of through traffic.

Farm equipment collisions

Cars striking tractors, balers and trailers, or equipment turning across a lane without warning.

Parkway and freeway-access crashes

Collisions on Loafer Mountain Parkway and SR-164 as traffic heads to and from I-15 at exit 253.

Truck crashes

Loaded trucks and trailers on the state routes need long stopping distances; see our truck accident guide.

Uninsured and hit-and-run drivers

Your uninsured motorist coverage can pay when the other driver lacks insurance or leaves. A no-contact case under Utah Code § 31A-22-305(6) needs clear and convincing evidence beyond your own testimony, so an independent witness matters.

After a Crash in Salem

  • Call 911 and ask whether Salem Police, the Highway Patrol or the Sheriff's Office is taking the report; keep the case number.
  • See a doctor the same day. Spanish Fork Hospital and Mt. View Medical Center in Payson are both state-designated Level IV trauma centers, and Utah Valley Hospital in Provo is the region's Level II center.
  • Photograph the field entrance or driveway, any slow-moving-vehicle sign, the lights and the road edge.
  • Get names from neighbors and passing drivers; in a small town the best witness is often someone who lives nearby.
  • Start your PIP claim and do not give the other insurer a recorded statement yet.

A Salem crash suit is filed in the Fourth Judicial District Court, 137 North Freedom Boulevard, Provo. Most claims settle, but we prepare each one as if it is headed to trial.
