Grantsville is on the west side of Tooele Valley, and its traffic funnels onto a few state roads. SR-138 comes off I-80 at the Stansbury interchange, becomes Main Street through town, then continues to its end at the Midvalley Highway (SR-179). SR-112 starts at SR-138 on 800 East and runs southeast past the Tooele Army Depot to Tooele. The Midvalley Highway itself runs from SR-138 near Grantsville north to I-80.
The highway is the town's main street, so through traffic and trucks share it with drivers parking, turning into businesses and pulling out of side streets. Rear-end and left-turn collisions are the everyday claims.
The commute between Grantsville and the county seat runs along the depot boundary. Open stretches, industrial trucks and new neighborhoods meeting the highway produce angle and rear-end crashes.
Salt Lake Valley commuters and long-haul freight meet at the interstate on-ramps. High speeds, heavy trucks and long gaps between exits make these the most serious collisions Grantsville drivers face, and the Highway Patrol investigates them.
The newer route between SR-138 and I-80 gives valley drivers an alternative to SR-36, and it adds junctions where drivers are still learning the patterns. Failure-to-yield and turning crashes at those junctions are the concern.
New neighborhoods on the edges of Grantsville feed local streets onto the state routes at stop signs. A driver who misjudges the gap in faster highway traffic causes the broadside crashes that follow.
Who investigates in Grantsville
The Grantsville City Police Department handles crashes inside city limits, the Tooele County Sheriff's Office covers unincorporated areas, and the Utah Highway Patrol takes I-80 and many state-route collisions. If a government vehicle, a road defect or a work zone was involved, § 63G-7-402 requires a notice of claim within one year.
Regardless of fault, Utah requires your own insurer to pay first. Personal injury protection pays reasonable medical costs up to at least $3,000 and replaces 85% of lost gross income, to a limit of $250 per week, for up to 52 consecutive weeks (§ 31A-22-307). Read about Utah's no-fault law.
Mountain West Medical Center in Tooele is a Level IV trauma center, so a badly injured patient may be transferred into the Salt Lake Valley, and the bills climb with every mile. General damages from the at-fault driver require one of the following under § 31A-22-309(1):
With one of those in place, the at-fault driver's liability policy owes the complete claim. Commute-distance crashes often exceed minimum limits, which is where your underinsured motorist coverage comes in; see how Utah UIM claims work.
Section 78B-5-818 bars recovery unless the defendants together bear more fault than you do, and it reduces any award by your own share.
In Grantsville claims, the insurer tends to ask whether you turned across Main Street too soon, whether you kept enough distance from a truck on SR-112, or how you handled wind and speed on I-80. Photos, the crash report and the names of other drivers become harder to find each week.
How long you have
Four years for most personal injury claims (§ 78B-2-307), two for wrongful death, and one year to give notice to Grantsville City, Tooele County or UDOT. The full deadline guide has details.
Left turns, parking maneuvers and side-street pull-outs along SR-138 through town.
On I-80 and the approach ramps, where a trucking company's logs and electronic data must be requested before they are overwritten; see our truck crash guide.
On SR-112 toward Tooele and SR-138 toward I-80, where speed, passing and following distance are usually in dispute.
Where the Midvalley Highway meets older roads, and drivers misjudge right of way or the speed of oncoming traffic.
When the other driver has no insurance, or leaves and is never found, § 31A-22-305 treats the car as uninsured and your UM coverage can respond. Our hit-and-run guide explains the reporting steps.
