I-15 at the south end of Davis County
The freeway squeezes the whole north-south commute into one corridor. Stop-and-go backups at peak hours set off chain collisions, and in a four- or five-car pileup each insurer points at the car behind it.

DAVIS COUNTY
Crash on I-15, US-89, Redwood Road or the I-215 ramps in North Salt Lake? Free case review, and no attorney fees unless we win.
North Salt Lake is a city of about 22,000 people (21,907 at the 2020 census) on the Salt Lake County line, and many of the vehicles on its roads are only passing through. Two interstates, a U.S. highway, the Redwood Road corridor and trucks serving the industrial land west of the freeway all meet within a few square miles. See North Salt Lake’s most dangerous roads for the crash counts on each street.
The freeway squeezes the whole north-south commute into one corridor. Stop-and-go backups at peak hours set off chain collisions, and in a four- or five-car pileup each insurer points at the car behind it.
South of Bountiful, US-89 runs as a surface highway alongside I-15 into Salt Lake City. Speeds above a city street, cross traffic from side roads and trucks turning to and from commercial lots make angle and rear-end crashes common.
Redwood Road enters the city at a diverging diamond interchange with I-215, where traffic briefly crosses to the left side of the road. Drivers unfamiliar with the layout hesitate, drift or turn from the wrong lane, and those errors lead to sideswipes and angle impacts.
Legacy Parkway begins at I-215 just southwest of the city and heads north along the wetlands. Since January 1, 2020, it has carried a 65 mph limit and allowed semi-trucks, so heavier, faster traffic now merges in and out at its southern end.
Center Street climbs from the freeway past city hall toward the hillside neighborhoods above it. Grades, curves and winter ice turn ordinary stop-sign and turning crashes into slide-throughs.
Which agency takes the report
The North Salt Lake Police Department, based at 10 East Center Street, investigates crashes on city streets, and the Utah Highway Patrol generally handles the interstates. When a UDOT work zone, a failed signal or a government vehicle is part of what happened, Utah Code § 63G-7-402 bars the claim unless a notice of claim is filed within one year.
Personal injury protection on your own auto policy pays no less than $3,000 toward necessary medical care, and 85% of lost gross income up to $250 a week for a maximum of 52 weeks, regardless of fault (Utah Code § 31A-22-307). The details are in our Utah no-fault explainer.
A freeway crash that ends with an ambulance to Lakeview Hospital in Bountiful, a Level III trauma center, can exhaust that coverage within hours. Utah Code § 31A-22-309 lets you claim general damages such as pain and suffering from the driver at fault only after one of these:
Once one applies, the at-fault driver's carrier is responsible for the full claim, and if its limits run out your own underinsured motorist coverage can add to it. Read how UIM works.
Utah reduces your damages by whatever percentage of fault is assigned to you, and you cannot recover from the defendants unless their combined fault is greater than yours (Utah Code § 78B-5-818).
In a multi-car I-15 crash, expect each insurer to argue following distance. At the Redwood Road interchange the dispute is usually lane position, and where a loaded truck was turning, whether you tried to get around it. Dashcam video, the trucking company's own data and early witness statements are what resolve these arguments, and all three are lost if nobody asks for them promptly.
Filing deadlines
Four years for most crash injury suits under § 78B-2-307, two years for wrongful death, and one year to give notice to UDOT, UTA, Davis County or North Salt Lake City. Our statute of limitations guide covers the exceptions.
Chain-reaction impacts in I-15 congestion, where fault may be divided among several drivers instead of resting with one.
Crashes with tankers and freight trucks bound for the industrial area west of I-15. The carrier's logging data, maintenance records and driver files matter as much as the police report, so a preservation letter should go out early. See our truck accident guide.
Wrong-lane turns at the Redwood Road diverging diamond, and merges where Legacy Parkway meets I-215. A driver in a lane that is ending must yield to traffic in the continuing lane under Utah Code § 41-6a-903.
Along US-89 and Center Street, where a driver pulling out of a business entrance or side road has to yield to traffic already on the highway.
Your uninsured motorist coverage can pay when the other driver has no insurance or drives off. If the other car never touched yours, Utah Code § 31A-22-305(6) requires clear and convincing proof of that car beyond your own testimony, such as a witness or video.
