Where Orem Crashes Happen

Orem's worst crashes gather where one road does too many jobs. University Parkway (SR-265) is a campus street for Utah Valley University, the state's largest university by enrollment, as well as mall frontage and a freeway feeder. State Street carries old US-89, 800 North (SR-52) links I-15 to US-189 and Provo Canyon, and UTA's UVX bus rapid transit line runs from southwest Orem past UVU toward Provo. Our Orem’s most dangerous roads page ranks every street by the crashes UDOT recorded.

University Parkway (SR-265)

A campus arterial, mall frontage road and freeway feeder all at once, with dozens of driveways and drivers crossing several lanes to reach a parking entrance. Left turns, driveway pull-outs and chain rear-end collisions are the pattern here.

State Street (US-89)

Orem's old main street, with strip commercial, older signals and long blocks between crossings. Angle collisions at intersections and pedestrians crossing outside a marked crosswalk are recurring problems.

I-15 and the Orem interchanges

The University Parkway and 800 North interchanges put heavy volume on and off the freeway within a short stretch. Merging traffic, sudden slowdowns and commercial trucks produce the highest-speed crashes in the city, and the vehicle data that settles lane position does not last.

The Utah Valley University approaches

UVU draws commuter traffic on a class schedule, along with students on foot and on bikes. Turning conflicts and pedestrian crashes near the campus entrances are a recurring pattern.

800 North toward Provo Canyon (US-189)

The link from I-15 to the canyon carries commuters, recreation traffic and vehicles towing trailers and boats that need far more stopping distance than the cars around them. Following distance and speed for the conditions are usually the argument.

Reporting agencies in Orem

The Orem Police Department takes city-street crashes and fields its own major accident investigation team for the serious ones; the Utah Highway Patrol handles I-15. If a government vehicle, a signal fault or a work zone contributed, a one-year notice of claim applies.

Your PIP Coverage Comes First

Whoever was at fault, your own personal injury protection pays at least the first $3,000 of medical care, along with 85% of lost gross income up to $250 per week for as long as 52 weeks. See how PIP works in Utah.

Emergency care at Timpanogos Regional Hospital can reach that limit fast. For pain, suffering and other non-economic losses from the at-fault driver, Utah Code § 31A-22-309 requires one of:

  • Medical expenses that exceed $3,000
  • A fracture
  • Objectively documented permanent disability or impairment
  • Permanent disfigurement of any kind
  • Dismemberment, the loss of a limb
  • Death

Meet one and the responsible driver's liability carrier owes the full claim. Too little coverage on the other side? Your underinsured motorist policy is added on top in Utah; here is how.

Fault Percentages in Orem Cases

Under Utah Code § 78B-5-818, your compensation drops by your own percentage of fault and is lost altogether if you are found at least as much at fault as the defendants combined.

Near campus the adjuster asks where the pedestrian or cyclist was; on University Parkway, whether you pulled out of a driveway too soon; on I-15, how closely you followed. Early photos, the police report, business cameras and witness names settle those questions, and they fade fast.

How long you have

Four years for most claims from an Orem crash, two for wrongful death, and a one-year notice for claims against UDOT, UTA, Utah County or Orem City. Read the full deadline guide.

Orem Crash Cases We Handle

Driveway and turning crashes

University Parkway and State Street frontage, where drivers angle across lanes for a parking entrance or pull out between parked cars.

I-15 interchange crashes

At the University Parkway and 800 North interchanges and on the freeway between them, where merges and sudden stops set off chain-reaction crashes. The event data that shows who was where has to be saved quickly.

Provo Canyon route crashes

800 North and US-189 toward Provo Canyon, where commuters mix with recreation traffic and towed trailers. Expect an early argument about speed and following distance.

Pedestrian and cyclist crashes

Students and residents walking or biking across wide streets near UVU and along State Street. The crossing point and the driver's sight line decide fault, and these crashes call for a different investigation than a two-car collision.

No insurance, or no driver

An uninsured or hit-and-run driver often shifts the claim to your own UM coverage. If that vehicle never touched you, Utah requires clear and convincing proof that it existed, and your own testimony alone will not do; an independent witness can supply it, so report the crash immediately.

Right After an Orem Crash

  • Dial 911. Orem Police respond on city streets and the Highway Patrol on I-15; before leaving, get the case number and the name of the responding agency.
  • Be seen the same day. Timpanogos Regional Hospital on 800 North has a 24-hour ER, and Utah Valley Hospital in Provo is a Level II trauma center. Head and bone injuries can take hours to announce themselves.
  • Take photos of the vehicles, the lanes, the signal you had, marks on the road and any debris.
  • Get names and numbers from witnesses; students between classes and passing drivers scatter quickly.
  • Open your PIP claim with your own insurer, and decline a recorded statement to the other driver's insurer until you know your injuries.

Orem crash suits go to the Fourth District Court for Utah County at 137 North Freedom Boulevard in Provo. We prepare each case for trial even though most resolve without one.
