Layton's High-Crash Roads

Layton's collisions gather on Antelope Drive's retail strip, Hill Field Road leading to Hill Air Force Base, the I-15 interchanges, and the rebuilt US-89 freeway on the city's east side. UDOT’s crash counts for each Layton street are on our Layton’s most dangerous roads page.

Antelope Drive

Closely spaced signals and shopping-center entrances keep drivers braking and turning across lanes. Rear-end hits and left-turn collisions are the usual result.

Hill Field Road (SR-232)

SR-232 runs from I-15 Exit 331 to Hill AFB's south gate. Morning and afternoon shift changes stack traffic at the gate and the interchange, producing rear-end chains.

I-15 through Layton

Commuters bound for Salt Lake and Ogden share the interstate with freight, and FrontRunner's Layton station draws traffic to the nearby streets. Merges at the Layton interchanges and sudden slowdowns drive most freeway crashes.

US-89 on the east bench

UDOT rebuilt US-89 with new interchanges at Antelope Drive, Gordon Avenue and Oak Hills Drive, so traffic now moves at freeway speed. Crashes cluster at the new ramps and merges.

Hill Air Force Base

The base is federal property. A crash on the installation, or one with a federal employee on duty, may be governed by the Federal Tort Claims Act, which begins with an administrative claim to the agency.

Layton's Responding Agencies

Layton City Police handle city streets, the Utah Highway Patrol covers I-15 and US-89, and federal law enforcement handles the base. Claims involving UTA, a city vehicle or a road defect require a notice of claim within one year.

How Medical Bills Get Paid

Your own PIP coverage pays first in Utah, regardless of fault: $3,000 or more for medical care and 85% of your gross wages up to $250 a week for up to 52 weeks (§ 31A-22-307). The full breakdown is in Is Utah a No-Fault State?

A single visit to Holy Cross Hospital – Davis can use that up. To recover pain and suffering from the at-fault driver, § 31A-22-309 requires at least one of these:

  • Medical costs above $3,000.
  • A bone fracture.
  • Permanent disability or impairment, based on objective findings.
  • Permanent disfigurement.
  • A dismemberment injury.
  • Loss of life.

Clear the threshold and the other driver's liability coverage is responsible for the full claim, backed by your UM/UIM coverage if theirs is thin; uninsured motorist claims don't need the threshold. Learn how UIM stacks.

Fault Percentages

Utah's § 78B-5-818 subtracts your share of fault from your recovery and bars it unless the other side's combined fault is greater.

In Layton, adjusters ask whether you had the arrow on Antelope Drive, how close you were following in the base queue, and your speed at a US-89 merge. Gate, business and dashcam video should be requested quickly.

Filing windows

Four years for most injury suits (§ 78B-2-307), two for wrongful death, one year for notice to UDOT, UTA, Davis County or Layton City, and separate federal deadlines for base crashes. See the Utah deadlines guide.

Layton Car Crash Cases

Retail corridor crashes

Antelope Drive and Hill Field Road, where turning traffic and lot exits collide.

Freeway and US-89 crashes

I-15 and the rebuilt US-89, where merges and sudden stops cause multi-car pileups.

Base-related crashes

Crashes on Hill AFB or with federal vehicles follow federal claim rules and deadlines, so location matters from the start.

Shift-change crashes

Base shifts and commuter peaks squeeze traffic onto Hill Field Road and the ramps in short windows. Rear-end chains are common, and following distance decides fault.

Uninsured and hit-and-run drivers

UM coverage often pays when the other driver has none or flees; if the car never touched you, you need clear and convincing proof beyond your own testimony that it existed. Our hit-and-run guide covers next steps.
