Where Mapleton Crashes Happen

Mapleton lies between Springville and Spanish Fork, with Spanish Fork Peak to the southeast and Hobble Creek along its northern edge. It is one of the few Utah County cities that does not touch I-15, so residents reach the freeway through a neighboring city, and roads laid out for farms now carry subdivision traffic as the town fills in. For injuries that aren't vehicle crashes, our Spanish Fork personal injury page covers the neighboring city.

US-89 on the west side

After splitting from US-6 at Moark Junction, US-89 skirts the west edge of Mapleton on its way north toward Springville. Traffic moves at highway speed past cross streets such as 1600 South and Maple Street, so drivers entering from the east must judge fast-closing gaps. Broadside and rear-end crashes at those junctions are the pattern.

Main Street (SR-147)

SR-147 comes up from Spanish Fork as 400 North, then turns north onto Mapleton's Main Street for about a mile. Homes and side streets open directly onto it, and turning vehicles stop in the travel lane, which leads to rear-end collisions and crashes with drivers backing out of driveways.

Maple Street

The last leg of SR-147 turns west on Maple Street and meets US-89 again. That junction pulls residents onto the highway, and a driver turning left off US-89 toward town must yield to oncoming vehicles close enough to be an immediate hazard under Utah Code § 41-6a-903.

Maple Canyon and the east bench

Maple Canyon cuts into the mountains east of town. Roads toward the canyon mix residents with campers towing trailers and hikers' vehicles, and narrow shoulders leave little margin for drivers or for people walking.

Moark Junction and Spanish Fork Canyon

Just south of town, US-89 and US-6 come together at Moark Junction and head up Spanish Fork Canyon toward central and eastern Utah, so freight and long-distance travelers pass close to Mapleton. Crashes involving commercial vehicles bring federal safety rules into play; see our truck crash guide.

Mapleton Police and the other agencies

Mapleton has its own police department at 305 North Main Street, and it handles crashes inside the city; its website takes report requests and publishes e-bike safety material and a traffic-calming policy. A crash on US-89 may be worked by the Utah Highway Patrol, and one outside city limits by the Utah County Sheriff's Office. Tickets are heard in the Mapleton Justice Court, not the court that decides injury claims.

Your PIP Pays First

Under Utah Code § 31A-22-307, the PIP on your own policy covers at least $3,000 of reasonable medical expenses, plus the lesser of $250 a week or 85% of lost gross income for up to 52 consecutive weeks, whoever caused the crash. Our no-fault guide has more.

An emergency visit at Spanish Fork Hospital and a transfer to Provo can exceed that almost at once. If you have or must carry PIP, you may seek general damages such as pain and suffering from the at-fault driver only if Utah Code § 31A-22-309(1) is satisfied by one of these:

  • Over $3,000 in medical expenses
  • A fractured bone
  • Permanent disability or impairment proven by objective findings
  • Permanent disfigurement
  • Dismemberment of any kind
  • Death

Clear one and the other driver's liability coverage is responsible for everything the law allows. Low limits? Underinsured motorist coverage from your own policy can add to the recovery.

Assigning Fault After a Mapleton Crash

Utah Code § 78B-5-818 reduces what you receive by your own percentage of fault, and you cannot recover from defendants whose combined fault is equal to or less than yours.

Expect questions about whether you pulled onto US-89 too soon, how fast you were going on Main Street, or whether you could be seen walking a rural shoulder at dusk. Doorbell and home cameras, the officer's diagram and early photos keep those arguments grounded.

How long you have

Four years is the general deadline for an injury lawsuit, two years for wrongful death, and one year to serve a notice of claim on Mapleton City, Utah County, UDOT or UTA under Utah Code § 63G-7-402. The deadline guide lists exceptions.

Mapleton Crash Claims We Handle

Highway-entry crashes on US-89

Where drivers from Maple Street and the south-side roads pull onto or across a highway that moves at speed.

Main Street collisions

Turning, backing and rear-end crashes along SR-147, where homes and side streets feed directly onto the route.

Canyon and trailer crashes

On the roads toward Maple Canyon and on US-6 in Spanish Fork Canyon, where towed loads and mountain weather lengthen stopping distances.

E-bikes, cyclists and walkers

Mapleton Police publish e-bike safety guidance, and riders and people on foot share roads that were built for farm traffic. Our bicycle claims guide and pedestrian guide explain how those cases are built.

Uninsured or fleeing drivers

UM coverage can pay when the driver at fault is uninsured or leaves the scene. A no-contact crash requires clear and convincing proof of the other vehicle, beyond your own testimony, under Utah Code § 31A-22-305(6). See our hit-and-run guide.

First Steps After a Mapleton Crash

  • Call 911. Mapleton officers usually respond in town, though a trooper or deputy may take a highway or county-road crash; get the case number either way.
  • Get checked today. Spanish Fork Hospital is a state-designated Level IV trauma center, and Utah Valley Hospital in Provo, a Level II center, takes the most serious injuries.
  • Photograph the vehicles, the intersection, skid marks, and any trailer or load involved.
  • Ask neighbors and passing drivers for names and phone numbers.
  • Start PIP with your own insurer and decline a recorded statement to the other side for now. Read how attorneys manage the insurance claim.

A Mapleton crash suit is filed in the Fourth Judicial District Court for Utah County, 137 North Freedom Boulevard, Provo. Most claims settle, but our legal team prepares each one for trial. For crashes on the Springville side, see our Springville car accident page, or call (801) 921-5134. Free consultation. No attorney fees unless we win. Hablamos Español.
