North Logan's Main Routes

North Logan fills the ground between Logan and Hyde Park on the east side of Cache Valley. US-91 is its main north-south artery, carrying traffic from Logan toward Smithfield and the Idaho line. SR-252 runs north on 1000 West in Logan and then east along 2500 North to meet US-91 in North Logan, giving valley traffic a way around downtown Logan. Cache Valley Hospital on 400 East and the North Park Police station on 600 East are both in town. For the streets with the most crashes in UDOT’s records, see North Logan’s most dangerous roads.

US-91 (Main Street)

The busiest road in town mixes through traffic with stores, restaurants and apartment entrances. Rear-end impacts at the signals and broadside crashes when drivers turn left across several lanes are the typical claims.

2500 North (SR-252)

The state route's east-west leg ends at US-91 in North Logan. Drivers arriving from the west side of the valley at speed meet signals, turn lanes and neighborhood streets, and signal-timing disputes often decide who pays.

The Logan border

Heading south into Logan, traffic thickens toward Utah State University. Commuters, students and Connect Transit buses share the road, and a bus pulling back into its lane or a driver stopping short for a passenger sets up chain collisions.

North to Hyde Park and Smithfield

US-91 continues through Hyde Park and Smithfield toward Richmond and Idaho. Speeds rise at the edge of town, and new subdivisions add side-street traffic that pulls out into faster lanes.

Winter mornings

Cache Valley winters bring packed snow, black ice and poor visibility. Utah law requires a speed that is reasonable for conditions (§ 41-6a-601) and at least a two-second gap behind the car ahead in most traffic (§ 41-6a-711), so a driver who slid into someone else usually has some explaining to do.

Who investigates

North Logan is policed by the North Park Police Department, which serves both North Logan and Hyde Park from 2575 North 600 East. On state highways, the Utah Highway Patrol may also respond. A claim involving a city vehicle, a road defect or UDOT requires a written notice of claim within one year (§ 63G-7-402).

Your Policy Pays the First Bills

Before fault is sorted out, Utah requires your own personal injury protection to cover at least $3,000 in reasonable medical expenses and, for up to 52 weeks, 85% of lost gross income, never more than $250 a week (§ 31A-22-307). Read how Utah's no-fault system works.

An emergency visit, a CT scan and a few weeks of therapy can use that up. To claim pain and suffering from the at-fault driver, you need one of these under § 31A-22-309(1):

  • Over $3,000 in medical costs
  • A fracture
  • Lasting impairment or disability that objective medical evidence confirms as permanent
  • Disfigurement that is permanent
  • Loss of a body part
  • A fatal injury

With one of those met, the other driver's liability insurer owes the full value of the claim. If that policy is too small, underinsured motorist coverage on your own policy may cover more.

Dividing Fault in Cache County

Section 78B-5-818 lowers your damages by your percentage of fault and bars recovery unless the defendants' combined fault is greater than yours.

In North Logan claims, insurers look at whether a left-turning driver on US-91 yielded to oncoming traffic as § 41-6a-903 requires, whether someone followed too closely in stop-and-go traffic, and whether speed matched the snow. Security video from businesses along the highway can be recorded over quickly, so ask for it early.

Deadlines

Most injury lawsuits must be filed within four years (§ 78B-2-307); wrongful death claims have two years, and claims against North Logan City, Cache County or UDOT need notice within one year. Details are in our Utah filing deadline guide.

North Logan Crash Claims

US-91 left-turn collisions

Drivers turning across the highway into shopping centers and neighborhoods who misjudge the speed of oncoming cars.

Signal and intersection crashes

At 2500 North and the other signalized crossings, where both drivers claim a green light and camera footage or a witness breaks the tie.

Chain-reaction rear-end crashes

In commute traffic between North Logan and Logan, often on snow or ice, where several cars and several insurers can be involved.

Walkers, cyclists and students

People walking or biking to school, work or the bus. Visibility and the crossing point shape fault; our bicycle crash guide explains the rules for riders.

No insurance, or a driver who fled

Your uninsured motorist coverage can pay when the other driver had none, or left the scene and was never identified (§ 31A-22-305). The injury threshold that limits other claims does not apply to a UM claim (§ 31A-22-309(1)(b)). See our hit-and-run guide.

After a North Logan Crash

  • Call 911 and note whether North Park Police or the Highway Patrol responds, along with the case number.
  • Get checked the same day. The state lists Cache Valley Hospital in North Logan as a Level IV trauma center and Logan Regional Hospital as Level III; the nearest Level II centers are in Ogden.
  • Photograph the vehicles, the traffic signals, road conditions and debris before anything is moved.
  • Get names and numbers from witnesses, and note any business with a camera facing the road.
  • Report the crash to your insurer to start PIP, and hold off on a recorded statement to the other insurer until you have seen a doctor.
